get textures for all those gory stuff like gashes or disemberment in violent games like sof2 or doom3? Do they photograph dead animal carcasses for it or do they make it from scratch?

Usually from scratch...by basing it off images from movies or pictures or just plain making some up.

lovely question... mostly they would be hand painted unless they need to be really detailed and accurate, in which case they'd probably have some sort of photo reference. the really good developers will actually mutilate or dismember themselves and take photos.

The above reason is why DNF is taking so long.

Half the development team is dead from to much realism.

Probably from medical publications, too. There's lots of photo source material there.

I remember seeing the making of Resident Evil Apocalypse. They said they got the lickers Red Meat texture by taking pictures of red meat from the butcher's shop. You know cow meat!

Maybe that's how game devs get those red skins! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Or you could just splatter black ink on white paper for a good pattern, scan it and then use that as a clip texture on a blood sprite.

For the dismemberment stuff, people can just use their best judgement and imagination. Anyone who would actually examine the gibs and try to compare it with real photographs to see if it really matched up probably shouldn't be playing violent videogames.

Sounds like Postal 2 to me. The use of vicious dogs and cats that are used for shotgun caps, well, that's something that may truly offend an animal lover indeed. RWS seems to use their "freedom of speech" to their advantage with that game, that's for sure. However, you really have to have a heart of lead to play that game, trust me.

However, I was strong enough to shy away from P2 for a moment, and I played some XIII, just felt that I needed that little "animated FPS" routine, sort of like a live-action comic book. I just needed that little boost.

I think the worst part about P2 was literally pissing on people and making them throw up.

When producing Dawn of the Dead (movie) the creators based the zombies on drowning victim photos taken from the police.

My guess is that sometimes reference materials are used, sometimes they arent.

Yeah, medical journals can be a rather morbid goldmine for stuff like that.

Other good spots to get some gore are photographs of operations, wildlife photography (Lion Vs Zebra = reference) and more often than not just a good hand in photoshop. I've used everything from satin to rubber piping in my time.
