The May 2005 issue of Computer Gaming World magazine contains the first screenshots and information on the next, Unreal Engine 3 powered Unreal Tournament game, including incredible revelations about the massive new Conquest gametype.

The article refers to the game as "the next Unreal Tournament", suggesting that the game's full title is as yet undecided. Midway have previously confirmed that no new UT titles will be shipping in 2005, so it's likely that this game will bear the name "Unreal Tournament 2006" or "Unreal Tournament 2007". It's also possible that Epic have ditched the yearly naming convention altogether... only time will tell. Scans from the article currently doing the rounds on IRC show a silver and black Unreal 'U' logo on the magazine's cover, and a rather detailed Necris character standing outside next to some sort of vehicle on the first page of the article itself. Other screenshots reportedly include UE3-powered Malcolm, as well as next-gen versions of the Goliath tank, Scorpion buggy and armor concept art.

Details of the game are sketchy at the moment, however we can report that Epic programmer Steve Polge is the game's Lead Designer, with Jim Brown filling the role of Lead Level Designer. The article also tells of Epic's desire to put gameplay above graphics with the next UT, as demonstrated by the fact that the title's programming is currently "ahead" of its art.

Unfortunately we cannot post scans of the article here on BU (for fear of provoking the wrath of the killer zombie lawyer army of doom), so don't ask, however we will update this story with more information as it becomes available.

Update 9:45PM EST by RaptoR: As promised, here are some more details from the article, courtesy of BU forumer placebo and drboom...

* The next UT will focus on AI, specifically voice-controlled AI.
* As with many UT2004 levels, the layout of maps in the next UT is being finalized before artwork is incorporated.
* The game will feature a global ratings system that will allow clans to compare scores.
* Gametypes include Onslaught, DM, TDM, CTF, and the all-new Conquest mode. No mention of Assault or Domination.
* Further info on the Conquest gametype:
o Features eight teams, each with unique armor.
o Conquest maps are "potentially as large as three onslaught maps with assault-like objectives and even a form of limited resource management planned"
o "there may be the option to treat a conquest match like a long term war, so you can play, take a break, and then go back and play more later"
o "you can use your stats to find similarly abled opponents"
o "pre-game lobbies" will be present in some form
o "clan pages and other sites will be able to be viewed from within the game"
o "conquest will take advantage of the UE3 engines ability to seamlessly stream maps by putting you in a battlefield the size of several maps stitched together"
o "players will battle on one of two teams, each sides terriroty will look physically different, as you take a territory it will convert to the otherteams structures and physical surroundings"
o "conquest should appeal to a wider gaming audience and provide a place where longer-term strategy, teamwork, and face-to-face fragging all meet"

Conquest mode sounds amazing. You guys remember that UE3 vid in a GTA3 style world? It was like a huge city that you could explore. I'm willing to bet that's a glimpse of what Conquest mode could be like.

hard to really know how this is shaping up without pictures.

sounds like a super futuristic "battlefield 2", especially the "conquest" mode.

most likely a 2006 release. we'll probably get to see it at this year's e3 hopefully.

The only real negative critic I ever heard about UT2k4 was the AI which was running behind on all other elements. With this I mean that the bots didn't knew what to with the vehicles exactly and I agree with this. Good to know that they'll turn it up a notch. (of ten I hope)

I really want jailbreak to be somewere in there.
and also:

-better support for joystick AND GAMEPAD
-unreal championship weapons for people that don't have state-of-the-art consoles.
- I want single player tournament and singlo player stories
- I want to buy the soundtrack of this UT game

ehhhh... found something:

- go to that page
- click the picture on your right, with the thing and the girl holding a link gun
- click "green"

this is what you get (http://forums.beyondunreal.com/raptor/r.php)

I sure hope they put some better router support in their next game! However that's done...

Because the only games that have given me problems with online play were the Unreal series http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If its not going to be our for another year then I'm sure it'll look great. But I still have to wonder what the hell the epic team is personally working on, they haven't released a game since 99.

Well technically, the powernodes in Onslaught are already a resource, since they generate vehicles for you. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I hope they will have bigger terrains in UT2K7. Imagine flying a Raptor or Manta through huge outdoor environments like the ones in Far Cry.

They're not really doing a Cloak 2 engine, are they? Cloak was great for its time, but its game Chaser was so poorly designed it didn't make good use of it. Hard, borderlining on the insane difficulty, bad pacing, etc. That game and that engine showed incredible promise but ultimately fell flat. Virtually nobody used the engine.

Right now they are working on Gears OF War, a UE3 powered game for the xbox 360. It'll be the first UE3 game released.

Yes, and XMP had classical resource management, with each team trying to keep their energy level up. Would you take this away, just because it appears in a different genre?

Isn't Epic making this ?

Who is ?

Epic is making and Midway is publishing, I believe.

As far as Conquest goes, I can't wait. I already like the idea of the current "node-capturing" system in games like the Battlefield series, UT2004 Onslaught and such. It can only get better.

I am beginning to have fond memories of the original version of Savage now. \o/

I don't think they plan on having a Commander or anything, but I eat those damn games up for breakfast! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love.gif

They never had plans to do so. It was always a 'release when we feel like it' thing. UT2004 was only done in a year because Epic worked in collobaration with several other studios.

I didn't realise it, but Epic never created Onslaught, that was Psyonix. (http://Psyonix.com )

Currently, Midway bought the rights to publish a few years worth of Unreal Tournament 200X.

I think I've seen you at the Atari forums before and figured you would know this already. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif This is pretty old news from last year.

I thought I had read something early last year that Epic was planning a yearly release, like EA does with sports titles.

That was the original idea, but they said that they don't mind skipping a year or two.

There's talk that they might abandon the 2kx thing all together.

That was their original intention with UT2k3, i believe.

They have so far released at least 1 free major content update for both games around a year after their release. However, the releases certainly would not warrant a new name/revision and since the content updates are free, it sort of self-screws them out of that method of churning out Madden-like revisions.

In addition, there have been a few "community bonus packs" which are the equivalent of an unofficial Epic bonus pack/content update. The difference being that it's just a collection of mods, mutators, and maps by your above average mappers/modders.

Mountain Man
03-28-2005, 06:04 PM
O.K. I knew I wasn't completely off-base. Still, I'm glad to see they value quality enough not to simply release a margainly improved cash-in version every year.

Wamplet
03-28-2005, 06:23 PM
Yeah, I would agree. When the big update comes out, they are also kind enough to ship the newer retail version as well. I think the current UT2004 with the bonus pack is the Editor's choice version. I think it may actually include the 2 major community bonus packs as well.

*Ahem*, there's still plenty of room for people to screw up, seeing how computer gaming is still in its infancy. We're a 30 year old industry. Things have barely gotten good. I was dissapointed by both UT2003 and UT2004. Not worth money, IMO. I'm still waiting for a breath of fresh air that is, seemingly, not coming.

Some details,

-No Skaarj
-Bombing Run, Assault, and Domination are not in
-Weapons: rocket launcher, flack, redeemer, link, shock, avril, sniper, dual enforcers (no assault rifle), Stinger (mini replacement) and canister gun, which is grenade / mine layer / goo combo.
-No Lightning gun. Sniper is in
-total of eighteen vehicles
-Also, a fix on older information: there isn't 8 teams in Conquest. Rather, the next UT has 8 races/teams: Nakhti, Juggernauts, Corrupt, Iron Guard, Krall, Jakob's team, and the custom SP-campaign team.
