View Full Version : Unfinished singleplayer games?

Which singleplayer game did you start once, but have never finished.
playing a singleplayer game for the second time through, but not finishing that doesn't count.

and, do you plan to finish the game sooner or later?

- Shadow Warrior: yes I'll finish this game sooner or later.
- Red Alert: yes I'll finish this game sooner or later.
- Doom95: yes I'm finishing it, already finished ultimate doom, I'm at doom 2 for the moment, don't know if I will ever finish final doom, it has nothing new.
- System Shock 2: I'll play it if I can get my PC to run it http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif I have said in the horror games thread my XP doesn't run it, but it even doesn't work on my windows 98 http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

edit: and lots of old sidescrolling games that are too hard, that I'll never finish, like crazyseu

Call of Duty because I had my saves on my C:\ which were lost after a reformat. I never got around to playing it again.

Too many to try and remember. I have a bad habit of starting games and then getting part way through, and then moving onto new games, so I've ended up with a large back catalogue of unfinished games that will probably never get finished.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time- I dunno. I had gotten a ways in, but then my computer died and I lost my saves. I tried playing it again but I just stopped caring. Probably wont finish.

Evil Genius- Got to the second island, then just got really busy with school. It's the sort of game I really need to devote whole days to, and when I have that free time again, I'll probably finish it.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater- According to my strategy guide I'm in the forest before I have to disguise myself as a scientist to sneak into the facility. Once again, mostly a lack of time issue. I'll probably finish it eventually, but I really hate how they penalize people who put the game down for a long time by making your food go rotten if it detects that the save is old.

Hexen 1 is cool, I played halfway through it so far... but that was. 6 months ago, maybe more.

If you'd of asked a month ago, I could have said; HL2, Far Cry and a 4th play through of CoD, but I've since finished those.

Quake 2
Clive Barker's Undying
Unreal

The Longest Journey
Icewind Dale
Baldur's Gate 2
The Sims 2 (I know there's not really an end, but I don't feel I've really explored it enough)

The Simpsons: Hit and Run
Anachronox
Beyond Good and Evil
The Space Bar
The Die Hard Trilogy
Independence Day
KOTOR

For a long time, I could have said Soldier of Fortune 2. I must have started that game at least three times before I finally forced myself to finish it. It got a little better as it went on, but that was a rare game where I much preferred the MP.

Right now, I'm replaying Blood, and I can see that I may not finish it. I think there are too many levels. After a while, I just want a game to end, and it's a good designer who can gauge that point and have the game end right when the player wants it to. The bad thing about Blood is, I'm ready for it to end and I'm not even done with the shareware episode! The last three or so episodes of the shareware are pretty monotonous.

Doom III. It was one of the lasts levels... Just get bored.

XIII - I'm just couldn't beat the last boss.

Half-Life - last boss. Mostly because I had poor fps. And after several attempts I quit.

Vampires Masquarade: Bloodlines - some elements were very poor, but I managed to reach somekind of begining of the end. But then I'm just give up this (annoying in some ways and attractive in others) game.

Not to mention games infinished in the very beginning.

Only 2 that I can think of at the moment:

Far Cry: Kind of enjoyed it in the beginning, but the fun level just kept dropping and dropping after those friggin' apes were introduced. Stopped playing after my interest level was <= 0.

GTA: San Andreas: This game is just friggin huge, I played it on and off for a month and I didn't even get past the first island. Keep telling myself I'll pick it back up, but my girlfriend declares ownership of the TV most nights, and too many of the missions are too frustrating.

Half-Life 2. I just got too bored with the linearity

Battlezone: the Red Odyssey- Chinese campaign. The level I gave up on is literally impossible. I mean, LITERALLY impossible. I challenge any other so called gamers on this forum to beat it. If they win, they get a golden star.

Doom 3: boring from the begining

Halflife 2: boring because of the hovercraft and buggy ride. I stopped at the big bridge http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Too uninteressting for me

Vampire Bloodlines: first quarter was triple AAA. From the whole sewer-part it got all p00py http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

FarCry: boring as hell IMO

That are the ones that count, the rest I left unfinished where just little titles.

DoomIII: Could never get it to run well.

Half-Life 2: It took me 3 minutes to start the game, then 45 seconds every time I wanted to save or load.

Thief 2: Never grabbed me.

the big bridge is almost at the end of the buddy ride.
then no rides for the rest of the game.
the bridge is a part on foot, a quite memorable one.
then you just have to drive through a tunnel, some curves, and that's it, done with the buggy.

btw: the buggy and airboat is what made the game a lot more interesting to me

Ghost recon 2 is on top of the list of the game that I just didn't want to finish. Ghost recon was so great and the second wasn't anything like it, just allot of crap put into one game!

Only others I can think of are gta SA and gta 3. The only gta I beat was vice city.

Don't know if it counts for anything, but when SA came out, I rented it for PS2 and only had it for 5 day rental, so I beat the storyline in 46 hours... when it comes out for PC, I'm getting it to play again and to try and 100% it.

I never finished SOF2.

The multiplayer sucked me in... (still does) and I have yet to finish it... probably never will. I was kinda pissed about the clunky weapon switching/inventory in single player as opposed to multi... I always wanted a singleplayer mod to make the weapons switch and operate as in multi... never found one. Must mean I'm the only one that got pissed about that.

Dark Cloud 2(probably will but gets boring)

Lionheart (No total crap, never again)

Splinter Cell:PT(will some day)

Mercenaries (probably will some day)

Pirates of the Carribean (Almost finished it, game glitched up, wont play again)

Red Dead Revolver (has a save pack glitch, might play again but it'll probably erase)

Bloodraven 2(Didn't really like it, may play it some time down the road)

Deus Ex 2 (Couldn't play, crappy computer http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Probably didnt miss much)

Kingdom Hearts (Made it to the boss, unskippable cutscene drove me nuts, might play again.)

DMC3 (still playing it, almost beaten)

FullMetal Alchemist (I will...someday...)

Harvest Moon:Save the farmland (I beat it one of the ways, never played it again)

Probably more that I missed.

--Splinter Cell 2. Sloppy, rushed design that only got worse near the end. Never bothered with it again.

--Neverwinter Nights. Slow and boring.

--Sid Meier's Pirates. Boring, plus crappy controls.

--Deus Ex 2. An insult to gaming, plus crappy controls.

--Thief 3. Good atmosphere, but crappy controls.

--Monkey Island 3. Too tough.

--Chaser. A personnal heatbrake. Good game, amazing graphics for an underdog. But one level halfway was simply impossible to finish, and cheat codes would not work in the console. God mode, level skip... nothing. This game is impossible to finish.

--Devastation. Always crashes, and the game is no longer supported by the developers or publishers. Can't finish it.

It might have been, but I quit on it, too. The first TR was the only one I really liked. When I realized what a slog it was to even continue TR2, I quit. I got to some part where there was a raft out on the middle of an underwater lake, and that's the last I remember.

I own about 100 games across various platforms. I would guess I've actually finished maybe 15-20 of them. It's the very rare game that holds my attention to the end. I am never one of the people complaining that a game is too short. For most games, 10-12 hours is plenty for me.

And this is one thing I dislike about the game industry in general. The original purchasers are the ones that made the original game (UT2003) a success. Shouldn't they be rewarded for this?

In this example, UT2004 should have come out in two flavors:
- Full game.
- Addon to UT2003 (at an Addon price!).

But for me, UT2003 is practically throw away. Why punish those that made a game successful?

Message to game developers: expansions and addons reward those that made your product successful. Don't create rehashed sequels when an expansion will do!

Well, they did a $10 rebate. But in any case what you have to remember is that UT2004 shipped with the same amount of extra content as UT2003 did. It feels like less because they only added two new game modes.

As an expansion pack it would be the best value expansion pack ever.

Other games I never finished:

Tomb Raider 3.

HALF LIFE 2

Am I the only one who thought it was way overrated?
I got to the part where you have to lift up the buggy after knocking the bridge down with the crane. After that I just lost interest. Ohh well I only really bought HL2 for CSS!

SEVERANCE

I really enjoyed this game at the time but I made the fatal mistake and chose the Barbarian. It becomes very hard and near on impossible to complete with him. I got near the end but just couldn't get any further, so alas I quit never to return!

I enjoyed HL2, but I found it a bit too linear. So I can see your point. It felt like I was being shuffled from sequence to sequence.

You did miss a few things after that point though. I enjoyed the nod to Tremors. You also missed my personal favorite... Follow Freeman where you inadvertently lead folks to grisly doom after grisly doom. I seriously doubt folks will still be championing this game in 2-3 years as they do now.

It deserves success, but it's not quite as good as folks want it to be.

I totally disagree. All they have to do is create an upgrade version that checks for the presence of a previous version of the software before allowing you to install the new one. This has been done thousands of times with thousands of software products including every version of Windows. Know what the difference is in the software on a Windows XP Upgrade disk ($150) and a Windows XP Full Version disk ($400)? One checks for a previous version of the OS and one does not. All the rest of the code is exactly the same.

I totally agree with Draz that the loyal buyer gets screwed, when they should be rewarded. When Access Software owned the Links Golf series they used to sell upgrade versions at a discount. All software manufacturers should do so. EA has been screwing people for years asking them to buy each new edition of their sports titles every year at full price. This was less of an issue before online play, but now your game has an online life of a year, and then most of the rest of the world moves on to the next version and you're left buying new if you want to continue to play online. It's a friggin' crime that they don't offer upgrade versions.

Let's see ...

Rune - just got repetitive and boring

Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness - glad it came with a sound card rather than me buying it

Carnivores CityScape - hunting game and shooter mixed together - what was I thinking?

Drakan: The Order of the Flame - it crashed about 4/5 through the game and I couldn't get it past that spot

Baulder's Gate - much too linear for a RPG in my opinion

I'm sure there's a ton of others. I just can't think of them now.

Think of the Ultima series. You can go anywhere and do anything or you can do nothing. You can spend all your time killing monsters or you can progress the story. Your party doesn't threaten leaving, you can solve the quests in any order you want, or ignore quests altogether. Doesn't affect the game at all.

What are your options in Baulder's gate? Go from town A to town B because there's nowhere else to go. If you don't get there fast enough the party starts whining. Try to stop for a bit and build your character up a bit and your party leaves you. And just try to bypass a quest for any reason at all.

I hate games that lead you by the nose. Especially RPGs.
