View Full Version : Memorable Deathmatch Moments

What were yours?

Last night I brought my system over and played Half-Life 1 deathmatch with a friend... what a blast. Tripwires are one of my favorite weapons actually... I wish they were more transparent though.

We played in various maps, but something fun I recall was in Snarkpit. The fan/tunnel that you jump up from and into, I placed a couple tripmines as I went through, and just waited for my friend to fly up and boom http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also tried tripmines in the radioactive waste pool but no matter where you put them, even out of the pool, they never last.

Another tactic I used was to sit in the corner where you end up after going through the tunnel. I could hear when my friend was going up the tunnel as he was using his speakers, I had my headphones on. Once he came down, I had my gauss gun charged high, ran forward after him hit the gate switch and we were both trapped by the second fan - and I let the gauss gun go right at his back. I did this twice http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This wasn't me and didn't happen to me, but I found it hilarious nonetheless. Quake 2 DM, DM5 to be precise. The area where there's a chaingun and an armour power-up. Basically you have to extend a ramp and jump to the armour. There used to be a bug in Q2 DM whereby occasionally someone would be 'invisible' on a server (normally a quick reconnect sorted it). One guy decided to have some fun with this. Basically he put himself in front of the armour power up so that anyone who jumped to it, hit him, and then had to hurry out of the slime beneath it. I saw the demo he took of this - it wasn't long, but the guy trying to get the armour just didn't have a clue. As he didn't give himself away by shooting at all - the poor sap kept trying to make the jump and failing miserably - obviously http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Years ago, playing Blood modem match with a friend of mine on the level with the moving train. I knew he was in the back of the train, on that little section outside with the railing and the tracks visible beyond it.

I had guns akimbo napalm launchers, and was determined to get the drop on him. So I got right to the door, then strafed at full speed through, firing about a million rounds of napalm. Problem was the railing didn't have any collision detection on it somehow, so I just went flying off the back of the train and died, the napalm hitting everything except my friend. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif He couldn't stop laughing. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Just imagine the Pulp Fiction guy kicking in the door and emptying that big gun, screaming "DIE YOU MOTHER******S!" and then not hitting anything, if you want to get a feel for what it was like.

When I was still a n00b in UT I saw this guy from one of the earlier UT-CTF clans doing amazing moving combos like it was nothing http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Whole matches were moments back when the UBB had an unofficial Battlefield Vietnam Server.

Man, those were good times.

My most memorable "deathmatch" moment was actually in UT2004 Onslaught, which is really close enough.. anyhow, I was in a Raptor coming down from the tower.. someone screwed it up pretty badly and I had to bail. What happened was that I landed on an enemy Manta, managed to get a headshot on the pilot with the lighting gun, then proceeded to jack it in midair. It was absolutely awesome.

Here goes my list...

1. I went to a LAN party when I lived on campus, and joined into a Battlefield 1942 game... Someone named themselves creamofronjeremy... and as we're trying to dodge bullets, this guy on the otherside of the room screams "who is 'creamofronjeremy'???" he repeats this about twice, and both times people are laughing about it...

2. I wasn't in the game, as 4 controllers on the N64 were in use and I needed a break. But this was around the time Goldeneye 007 came out. My friend was participating and they were going to play capture the flag in the Complex for 10 minutes... I told him to get the flag before everyone and I pointed out where the hidden spots in the level are to him, and i told him to hide in there and face the interior wall so that no one could see that he's behind a hidden wall... The other 3 chased around for 8 minutes, gave up on shooting each other just to find him and he'd give them subtle clues of I'm by a wall or by a light... He ran out after 8 minutes and when he entered the arena again no one was near, so they found him and they were like "where in the hell you come from?"

3. Building hidden switches for hidden doors in Duke 3D maps (it's bad I know, but i haven't done that anymore).

4. Having people fall for holodukes..

5. Setting a tripmine grid in a room heavily trafficed...

My most memorable DM moment was in UT2003. I played in a DM/CTF Instagib Clan. I played 1vs1 agains a guy from a rival clan. He was really good, I was not supposed to play but substituted when teh guy who was supposed to play did not show. So it was a matter of I play or we forfiet.
So I went on to play the game of my life and won, although narrowly. It should have been an easy win for him considering I generally suck. Ah the good ole days.
Now I am just fodder. lol

Winning my 3rd HL2 DM game, ever.

Slamming people with stuff, even though they unload on me, as I used the grav gun as a shield.

Hiding a bomb so well, that the CS team couldnt find it, and we still won.

UT - Jumping over people's heads, and killing them at the same time.

My favorite deathmatches always took place in ROTT. Specifically countless matches on Four Square, Into the Fray, Cross Purposes, and, King of the Hill. There was one that was shaped like a baseball diamond, but I can't remember the name of that one.

I warned him: "I'm good. Very good". But he insisted in doing some 1v1 Doom II deathmatch in MAP01 over modem. I can't remember the exact score, but in a bit more than 30 minutes I owned him 120 to 10 or something like that. And he wasn't a noob.

With less fond memories I remember in the same time playing with a Doom god. He always won with three to four times my frags. I still remember him saying "you move real good!" as saying "you aren't that bad..." Whoa.

I took on my cousin and a few other guys in counter strike and really kicked their asses hard. and my cousin is really good.

One of my favorites was a deathmatch we were having in Duke Nukem 3D the night before it was originally released to the public.

Three or four of us went to the same spot in Hollywood Holocaust and did a can can dance with our Dukes in front of one of the demo recording cameras. Stood on top of each other too. Was quite funny.

We did release a demo of that quite a long time ago. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Will you be releasing any funny videos of Dukematches when you guys are much, much closer to release, or after the release?

My most memorable moment would be when my father and I were dukematching and he shouted out from the other side of the house "I'm getting the jetpack." Beating him to it (Raw Meat level - first jetpack secret) he pressed the button and I was crushed. Bastard. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I played so much multiplayer back then. Now I can't be bothered.

My best friend and I used to play about 3 hours of DukeMatch or ROTT per night during the summer when we were 12-14. Usually ended up with one of us so pissed at the other that we would call the winner up and pretty much just curse them out. Murder your family, rape your sister, that type of stuff. Good times. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can't answer that. The deathmatch video I speak of was a spur of the moment last second thing. There was no plan for it.

Setting up SLAMS in HL2 DM on ladders or doors (just like I did almost 3 years ago to the date of this thread :p) where TBZ or Zuljin would run into them unaware, bwahahahah.

Also if I didn't have an RPG I'd toss up a grenade, switch to grav gun to grab it and fling it in their face - get the timing right and BOOM. It was so fun because I had "mistake" kills of other people who'd run frantically into the path of the grenade arch about 3 or 4 seconds out! :D

I was having a LAN-party with four people, we played cs 1.6. When we where about to play cs_havana i joined CT, so did one of my friends. It was as usual, but then I bought a shield and a deagle, so did he. We called ourself "true spartans" and fought the others(actually we called ourselves true spartens... let's see how many of you who get that joke). At that point my team got kinda good. We continued that at some de map. We bought defuse kit so we could be true spartans and do the job quickly :D. The terrorists got kinda pissed at us.

All I can remember within so short notice is one of our C&C (Tiberium Dawn) games. We both lived on the same apartment house (same side, too). He lived in the 7th story while I was in the 1st. We used to play alot of games with him throwing down 25m null-modem cable down through his window.

Here's a settlement of one of our games:

My friend basically gathered a huge amount of tanks and infantry to the middle of the map and asked me to battle him with my units there.

Well, my building style in C&C is more constrained and less aggressive, I tend to like building a kingdom with walls and have all the technology. I had almost no units to spare for an attack, so he would've beaten me in it.

Luckily I had a nuke in store for him, without thinking twice I just launched the nuke on his units. He was left with just a few units having hardly half health. In few seconds, the connection was terminated and he started pulling the null-modem cable so my computer started wiggling towards the window, luckily I got it unplugged before anything bad happened :D

Lets speak in form of a "it might be a possibility closer to the release/after release" :) Possible?

Ancient Topic. :D

Anyways, I once hit about 15 Rails in sequence in Q3DM7 (and most of them were cool-looking, difficult flicks), at the "middle" area, with the Rocket Launcher and the staircases. It was cool because everyone had RLs or Plasmaguns/Shotguns - you know, weapons that matched the area/situation, and I managed to last long with the Railgun there, long cooldown and all. I must have finished that match with 75%+ accuracy or something. :p

Last night online in UT3 I had the goo gun loaded up and right before I picked up the shock rifle I shot the ball where I thought someone might run into it. I saw 2 guys fighting and sent a shock ball their way and combo'd both of them while someone ran into my goo ball offscreen so I got a multikill. Maybe not the best moment but it felt good.

Probably my best hour was whipping my Network Security instructor 86-20 in some HL DM, after not having played any DM myself in 3 over years (and was never great to begin with).

In reality the thing I remember most wasn't a particular "moment", but rather the week I was ranked in the upper 1% of TFC players (something like 600th range out of like 70,000 players that were tracked). And I accomplished that without playing in empty servers and just grabbing the flag to rack up points...

Reminds of one of the better-spent Redeemers I've ever had: On the UT2004 demo, at ONS_Torlan, I managed to nuke a Goliath, a Scorpion, a bunch of guys on foot, a Hellbender and two Mantas. :D I think I have the screenshot of the console frag messages on my old HD. It was like watching a small task force joining up at a power node and then nuking it. :dopefish:

One of the funniest moments i had, was when i hacked GameJunkie to death with AVP2's hacking device

And moments after, when GameJunkie used the Welding Torch device to kill me :D

Hmm.. one thing I can recall is in UT2004 where my vehicle was almost wrecked, some AVRIL rocket was flying towards me and I ejected right before the impact. While I was still in the air I made the guy who fired a rocket explode into millions of bloody chunks with the help of my Flak Cannon :)

The only online game I've ever played regulary is Hostile Intent, and there are loads of memorable moments that took place there - sometimes The Specialists. I did have some games in UT/UT2004 but don't partically enjoy them online. There was a point when I played FEAR online and had a good round but these days my connection doesn't do too well, and especially during online play.

Playing Desert Combat at a local internet cafe, and firing at random aircraft going past, with a cannon used for taking out aircraft carrier's. Needless to say a few people were quite surprised at that one! :)

i fondly remember the days where i could actually win in multiplayer. back in the UT days :( i miss those times.

also remember hilarious moments with the flamethrower and a crowded room in RTCW multiplayer on beach :D

My most memorable moment was probably in Halo. It was in that cave level - me and my friend were duking it out in some banshees, right before mine exploded I jumped out, grabbed onto his in midair, and kicked him out sending him falling to the bottomless pit below :)
