knew it was coming but still http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif

the serious team said they were going to incorporate more fps style play mechanics in this game and not just be a mindless shooter(not that it was a bad thing to begin with... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) so i'm really excited to see what they've done differently.

At least it's official & there's a rough date attached now. I sure hope they're successful in staying true to what was so great about the original.

Sam is still the most pure gaming fun I've had since . . . . well, since Duke!

That must have been said by some idiot who doesn't like a shooter unless it's made up of squad based teams no doubt. SS was a great game. A throwback in many ways to simpler gaming days, but with a kickass engine that put so much in front of you at once it was awesome at times. My favourite co-op game ever.

cool. Squad based teams suck. I like the good ol days of Duke and Blood. I like those two cause they are straight forward, but are full of gags and interactivity. New shooters like Halo or Red Faction 2 are bland. I think I'll give Serious Sam a try.

Serious Sam is about as bland as it gets. Maybe a bit less than Will Rock, but still, up their with the greats of blandness, Halo and Halo 2.

Take a hint. Everyone is going off about how great the co-op was, as were people with Halo. That doesn't make a bad game good, it just makes it a lot more tolerable.

Aww, I think it looks really.... what's the word?.. Hideous?
Is it just me or does the blue armor suit seem very unreal tournament-esque?

Eventhough it looks terrible, doesn't mean the game won't be any fun tho. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually I think each of their "orc" enemies is making fun of a different game franchise.

If you watch the old GDC video or look at this(low quality) screen (http://www.seriouszone.com/gallery/ss2/ss2shot06)

you can notice similarities to armors in certain games...
The blue one is similar to unreal tournament, the grey made me think of the doom 3 guy, the orange one reminds me of the HL2 HEV suit and also master chief, and finally the red is very similar to the armor in red faction.

edit: that yellow guy in the back of the new shot seems like a mancubus on tank treads.

I wouldn't worry about the game being too similar to unreal, and imo the game looks awesome.

Croteam is just being fun with everything. The football "orc"(which hopefully isn't being replaced by that yellow mancubus/tank thing in the new screen) is obviously going at the popularity of sports games, Sam and his bike remind me of Full Throttle, and then there are all of the other strange and funny things that aren't really making fun of anything (Such as the flying kleer wielding a blunderbuss, and the big statue of a monkey on a toilet at the end of the old video ).

Out of all the games in my upcomgin games list, SS2 is the only one my girl friend said she would play.

SHe likes Serious Sam because it's bright and colorful and just plain fun. Plus as a not so experianced FPS player, she likes the simplified gameplay machanics. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I still don't get why people call the SS games simple. Simple compared to what? Certainly not other FPSs. Infact, the battles in SS are far more demaning and diverse than in most other shooters. Most more "realistic" shooters work and feel exactly the same: get cover and spray bullets at your enemy. The one who scores the lucky hit first wins. In SS, weapons and enemies are very diverse. You have to figure out the best way to fight each enemy (which gets even more interesting with several kinds of enemies attacking simultaneously)

Cant wait!

Damien_Azreal
04-27-2005, 07:15 AM
I wasn't calling SS simple, I just mean tthat certian aspects of it's gameplay are more simplified compared to other shooters.

My girl friend has a hard time when she has to remember several buttons. So the fact that she doesn't have to reload helps here out. She likes that all you really need to know is how move and shoot.

She had a hard time with Doom 3 and Far Cry because of flashlights, reloading and other things.

That's all I was implying. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Serious Sam 2 will feature 42 types of enemies throughout the game, including some of the following:
* Kleers are back, and more unnerving than ever. Their eyes now glow with fire and there's a flying variant as well.
* Kamikaze bombers are back as well, although they have an enormous bomb as a head, attached to their body via a spring.
* Zombie stockbrokers
* Witches on rocket-powered brooms and flying cauldrons
* Varying sizes of demons with tank treads and rocket-launcher fists
* Robots with chicken legs and T-Rex heads
* Clowns throwing explosive cakes
* Freakishly huge plants with freakishly huge teeth

Try to imagine the third from the bottom in your head... rol! I always thought these games were the dream of an arcadish shooter fan. Well, next to the Duke. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

There is an update on 2K Games site: (http://www.2kgames.com/home/serioussam2_pc.shtml)

• Runs on the newly designed Serious 2 engine with graphics, environments and physics that are 100 times more complex than previous Serious Sam games.
• Maintains the same level of extreme action that Serious Sam is known for. Despite its jaw-dropping visuals, Serious Sam 2 will surpass the onscreen enemy benchmark that the original Serious Sam games set.
• Over <font color="yellow">40</font> beautiful, expansive levels spread out over 7 unique environments. Sam will travel through thick jungles, murky swamps, frozen tundra, futuristic cities, volcanic planets, and more. Each level is seriously enormous!
• <font color="yellow">45</font> newly designed enemy types for Sam to face. The Serious Sam series is known for its outrageous enemy personalities, and Serious Sam 2 will give players a lot more to laugh about.

I'm just wondering how they are pulling this off.
The first two could have tons of enemies without slowdown. And now they are improving the graphics, sound, and adding ragdoll physics. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

That must be some solid code.

I'm not happy the kamikaze bombers are back, becase they run faster than you.
I think it would be much more fun if they threw MORE kamikaze bombers at you at the same time, but if you run faster than them.
so you have to avoid all those running/screaming guys...
now you can't avoid them, you have to shoot them on sight.

I also hope the infinite waves of enemies in the same arena disappears too.
I hate that in serious sam.
for example you enter arena, 3 waves of enemies appear.
you pick up the 10 shells in the middle of a room, and more enemies spawn than you have shells picked up http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

What fun would that be, if you could just run away from them? Enemies like the kamikaze or werebulls that have no ranged weapon abilities need an advantage like that or else they would be pretty much useless for gameplay.

Cerb,

Think of each wave of enemies as a puzzle to solve. Just about every time a massive wave of enemies rolls right over me, my first reaction is always "This is impossible." But then I look and I find a sliver of hope, which leads to another sliver of hope. Suddenly, I've done some real damage to this wave. But I still need to be careful! I know "mini-waves" can drop in at any time. So I keep moving, circle strafing, with rockets and machine guns. I see my goal, but I don't run for it until this wave of enemies is completely gone.

Finally, when the last chainsaw crazed pumpkinhead is destroyed, I reach my goal. I hear a rumble off in the distance. Closer, I hear the sound of teleporters. The rumbles get louder. There they are! My god, there are so many of them! "This is impossible!"...

Painkiller does it differently.

Serious Sam is about humor, chaos and the fact that your grossly overwhelmed.

Although Painkiller does have a lot of enemies, being overwhelmed was never really part of the game.

SS doesn't have the serious tone that Painkiller does, so the developers can get away with exagerated results.

You do still have those six-shooters, you know. Don't immediately write them off - they've saved my ass many a time. I've taken out several large rocket mechs with those revolvers - all you need is open space (and plenty of time http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif), which SS levels usually give you in spades.

There's always a way - that's what makes it fun. No matter how difficult any challenge in SS was, Croteam managed to present it in such a way that never frustrated me once. I always had a smile on my face playing those games! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Even when I'd get creamed by zillion enemies, it tended to make me laugh at just how ridiculous is was to see all that carnage on the screen at once! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A lot of people consider Serious Sam a Duke Nukem clone, but not me. Even Duke took himself more serious than this.

Sam is all out fun, there are a few times you'll have almost over 100 enemies on the screen. But you've got the firepower to just mow em down. The levels are huge, wide and full of color and little secrets to find.

I would suggest go out and grab em, Serious Sam: the First and Second Encounters should be pretty cheap now. I think there's even a boxed set with both games.

Once again, I hate to post after myself... but I picked up a copy of Computer Games June issue today. The Serious Sam 2 preview is awesome.
It's got pics of the new Kleer (creepy as hell) and the new Beheaded Kamikaze (very cool/funny)

http://www.cgonline.com/images/stories/2005june.jpg

I don't have a scanner, so I can't post scans... but I can post some of the article for ya. By typing it myself, I'm not gonna do the whole thing... only part. I'm pretty bored today.

On the engine...

"Whereas other recent high-profile shooters proudly flourished 900 variations on lightless corridors festooned on the rafters with steam-wreathed pipes, misty ducts, and faintly smoking gratings, all golf-clappably rich in detail and uniformity, Serious Sam lovingly shrivels your retinas to raisins with vibrant, fully destructable http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif environments that look nothing alike, or like anything you've seend. Simply put, Serious Sam II just feels alive."

On the game...

"Serious Sam II features a much beefier storyline complete with cheerfully goofy cutscenes detailing cheerfully goofy interplanetary mission odjectives."

"Serious Sam II features a variety of topographies, from bucolic tropical islands, swampy marshes, and ridges of sizzling lava to snowy ice fortresses, Chinese cities called Hong Pong ruled by John Shlong whose inhabitants apparently worship King Kong, and even a "Valley of the Giants" segmant replete with skyscraper-high grass blades and Prius-sized sand grains. (The team is toying with the notion of adding ride-able giant ants to this section, if time permits) Sam's boss opponent is still known simply as Mental"

On enemies...

"In keeping with Croteam's taste for the gleefully deranged, the 42 types of minions Sam squares off against run the strangely consistant gamut of zombie stockbrokers and witches swooping around on rocket-powered brooms and in surprisingly agile floating cauldrons, to gargantuan demons on tank treads with rocket launchers for fists, chicken-legged robot-walkers with the head of T-rexes, and sinister clowns who fling delicious but exploding cakes frosted sinisterly with images of your official legal likeness."

"While updated versions of the universally beloved, steadily screaming, shirtless runners with heads for bombs, and a more metallic but equally infuriating breed of those pesky skeletal equines with the nerve racking gallop known as Kleers are also on hand by the hundreds to insistenly remind you of glorious endurance tests past."

And finally, weapons...

"Croteam has beefed up San;s arsenal. In addition to a basic circular saw blade that's perfect for dispatching oncoming hordes of monsters and rows of stationary trees alike, Sam also gets grenades, a guided-missle zap gun, a double-barrel super shotgun heftier than Doom 3's BFG, a six-barrel rocket launcher, a minigun, an Uzi (upgraded from the tommy gun), a plasma rifle covered with blue test tubes, a sniper rifle, an upgraded cannon with helpful gauges for both ammo and trajectory, a gun that launches parrot-guided explosives (don't worry, they're humanely vaporized), and something called a Serious Bomb that probably causes something to happen whne you do something with it."

Oh yeah, vehicles...

"Sam will be able to man, ignore or destroy a varietyof different turret types, as well as get a chance to pilot at least ten different types of vehicles, from speeder bikes to hoverboards, helicopters, planes, and gunboats. There's also a giant ball covered with razor spikes you can climb inside and roll around in, smashing into clusters of monsters."

Co-op will be back, and there's a bunch more stuff on the technicle side of it. Plus a little interview with the head guys of Croteam and some other stuff.
I picked the mag up at EB for about five bucks, I would say it's worth it.

There ya go... hope you all like it.

I think Serious Sam 2 is gonna be the game that really makes Croteam stick out from the rest.

Just judging from the screens it's looking great, dual uzis... varied environments, kick ass original enemies.

I'm in love... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The gibs are absolutely horrible. The enmies in the videos gib far too often, like in pk:booh, but at least booh had peice of body parts instead of chucks of red polygon bouncing around the stage. It baffles me how double uzis would have enough power to make a body explode.

Has anyone downloaded this trailer... it's supposed to be the official E3 trailer

Serious Sam 2 trailer (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/serioussam2/media.html)

High quality is about 170MB and low quality is around 35MB.
I was just wondering if it's any different than the other two I already listed.

Also, about the gibs... it could just be a placeholder thing and they might change it before the release of the final game. But they might not, and that's fine with me.
Could just be they were playing on an easier skill, I remember that in the original SS games on easier skills enemies would gib with almost one shotgun blast. But on medium and up you need way more powerful weapons to gib.

Either way... I don't care about the gibs. I'm guessing I'll be having way to much fun blowing shit up to care about chunk ctyle gibs. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

SS was ok for a throw back title that was cheap, but a polished 40$ turd is still....uh... something that came out of yer ass.

watch the gamespot live video.

information from that video:

15 different weapons (5 return from original game), weapons also have alternate fire (so you can for example have dual machineguns with grenades as secondary fire, and you can shoot with your 2 machineguns while lobbing grenades at the same time!)
also, you can see how fast the cannonball will launch from the cannon (you know from original game: the longer you hold fire, the further it shoots) based on a bar that increases the longer you hold fire. the bar represents the mouth of the smiley you can also see on the serious bomb from the original game (second encounter). if you know what I mean.

there is also a circle chainsaw, if it's vertically oriented then it works like a normal chainsaw, if it's horizontally oriented, you shoot it through hordes of enemies (think of gravity gun + circle saw from HL2-ravenholm with the zombies)

you also have a metallic version of the kleer.

you also have an enemy type that works with team AI, unless you kill the leader, then the team AI stops and the squad uses individual AI.

levels should take you 10-15 minutes, if you explore everything, 30 minutes. +- 40 levels, 7 themes

there will be a story: 2 hours worth of cutscenes throughout the game http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Why not? We all like/love Serious Sam and I know I've been awaiting this game since I finished SS:TSE. Not all FPS fans are all into realism and squad tactics with our games... some of us like mindless fun and violence.

And don't get me wrong, Quake 4 looks nice but compared to SS2... I honestly think SS2 looks more beautifl in every way.

Once again, it's all about personal preference.

actually i did play it at e3 and it was SS only shinier - it still looks and plays like a budget title. not worth full price IMO. i mention quake because both are a rehash of a tired genre.

I hope that/wonder if the game will also have original areas.
serious sam first encounter had 0 special places.
serious sam second encounter has a lot of them, and I'm only in elephant's atrium (haven't seen the rest of the game yet).
it has for example a room where you bounce on the floor, a newton's nightmare room (where the floor is 360 degrees around, some sort of cilinder), rooms with changing wind breezes, rooms where you have propellers that bounce you up, after the propellers a room with water that flows rapidly upwards so you are catapulted away, lots of traps, ...
I wonder if SS2 will also be full of some new original ideas for weird rooms? someone read something about that?

I also hope NETRISCA implant is back, anyone knows this?

yeah of course you don't need to watch it, but like you say you can't resist, but even in the previews they mention/describer all weapons, themes, and a lot of enemies including bosses

Okay, time to revive the SS2 discussion. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just got an e-mail from Dean at Croteam. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I was cursious about system specs for SS2 and this is the response I got back...

- Nvidia cards generally perform better with Serious Sam 2.
- If you're going to buy a Nvidia card, wait a month or two to get more money. The price will probably also drop because of their new 7800 XT.
- If you're going to get the 6600, take the GT version. It performs a lot better.
- If you really want to buy an ATI card, get the 9800 Pro.

The FX series should be avoided at all cost! Buy a Nvida 6000 series card, or Radeon 9000 or X series card.

Sorry Cerb, looks like you might have to upgrade your graphics card to get a good Serious Sam 2 experiance. I'm pretty damn happy... glad my PC came with a x800.

What, I thought they have a contract with ATI http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
But otherwise, that´s good for me and my 6800 Ultra http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Damien_Azreal

Nope, Croteam signed a contract with Nvidia. Mostly for the 7800 series of cards. Seeing as how Serious Sam 2 will feature HDR. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But he did say that anything in the 6600 to 6800 series should /will run the game with settings pretty well maxed.

Same with ATi x800 series. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif So I'm happy, still gonna upgrade to a card with more ram... but now I'm not in a hurry to do it.

they said in interviews that the system requirements wouldn't be as high as people thing, so a FX card could run it smooth on minimal quality? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
anyway, I'm planning to upgrade this year anyway, I'll wait until price drops because of their 7800.

Its sort of just more of the same Sam from before. So if you liked serious sam 1st and 2nd ecounters you'll have a good idea of what to expect in SS2. It's not the most complicated of games...but hopefully with vehicles and the new guns it will make it interesting.

Cerberus_e

serious sam: the second encounter did a good job varying the game more than the first encounter, but it still wasn't varied enough, the corridor of death on the last level bored me to death.
I hope they put more special areas in SS2, like newton's death from the second encounter http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I now found the most RIDICULOUS bug in serious sam 2.
honestly, how many playtesters does this game have? 0.3 persons?
you know you can watch demos, right?
well, I watched the beginning of the shield generator demo (a level from episode 7).
then I wanted to play, so I went to where you choose your profile and it said for my profile:
current level: shield generator.
and I can actually play it!!! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif
it even unlocked all levels up to shield generator, and I'm only in episode 2 http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is a new patch out that is supposed to fix a few things. That might be one.

Cerberus_e
12-20-2005, 03:16 PM
I see in the list of things that's fixed that they fixed "difficulty level loading incorrectly when loading a game".
I load up a savegame and at the end of the level, in the statistics, it tells me I'm playing on tourist mode instead of medium, seems like it's already too late http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif
also explains why the game is so easy.

this game is SO rushed out of the door, it's not funny.
now I can restart the whole game, because I want to play on medium http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Damien_Azreal
12-20-2005, 03:21 PM
That's wierd... I've never had any of the problems your having Cerb.

May later tonight.

Cerberus_e
12-20-2005, 03:26 PM
no, the patch FIXES that problem.
it's just that the problem already happened before the patch. so it's too late http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I'm going to take a break of this game and play other games first (FEAr, quake 4, call of duty 2), having to restart the whole game is NOT fun.

Damien_Azreal
12-20-2005, 03:35 PM
Just do a custom level.

Pick the level you were on and select the skill. Your weapons and ammo amy be different... but it will be back were you where.

Cerberus_e
12-20-2005, 03:41 PM
yes but the problem is that I don't know where the "tourist instead of medium" started.

Damien_Azreal
12-20-2005, 03:58 PM
Well, so you know... Serious Sam 2 doesn't increase the number of enemies at higher skills.

It just makes then more powerful and tougher to kill. So just starting at the beginning of the second chapter would probably be okay.

Cerberus_e
12-20-2005, 04:06 PM
I don't know, I already found the last few levels of episode 1 surprisingly easy.

How exactly do I watch my statistics? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
So I can look every now and then if it's still medium, or I won't feel safe.
I open netrisca with tab, but I don't find a way to see my statistics.

I just found another bug.
When I turn on vertical synchronisation then the video playback is very slow, much slower than the audio which is supposed to play at the same time, so it gets all out of sync!
So I have to turn it off so the video of the cutscenes are properly synchronised with the audio.

I mean, now this isn't that big of a problem, but what are we going to do within 5 years when we all have super machines?
tearing galore.

Damien_Azreal

Okay to change your screens in Netricsa hit the button you have binded to "Use".

For me it's Space bar.

I just found another bug.
When I turn on vertical synchronisation then the video playback is very slow, much slower than the audio which is supposed to play at the same time, so it gets all out of sync!

Actualy Vsync is a problem that has been known about since the release of the game.
On Nvidia cards Vsynce can completely screw up playback and such, on ATi cards it cuts the FPS a lot. It's just easier not to use Vsynce or use the Vsync setting in your Nvidia control panel.

Cerberus_e
01-01-2006, 12:07 PM
Yes, I turned vsync off, it's not tearing that bad anyway.
But I wonder what we'll do a few years from now with our nextgen beast machines? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif the tearing will be unacceptable.

Vsync does have an impact on performance in games.
F.E.A.R. for example: the performance test told me I had 8% of the frames under 25 FPS when turning on vsync.
Without Vsync it's only 1% http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Damien_Azreal
01-01-2006, 12:37 PM
Yes I know Vsync has a hit on FPS in every game. But in Serious sam 2 the performance hit on ATi cards is terrible.

Poeple at seriouszone.com said that they had frames in the 60 to 100 without Vsync, but with it on they had them in 20 to 30. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

But don't have it on, and I don't see any tearing at all.
