The Arizona senator has been limited to spending $84 million for the general election campaign after accepting federal funds under a program created after the Watergate scandal.

The presidential candidates of the major parties who opt in for public financing of general election receive a public grant to cover the entire cost of their campaign on the condition that they do not raise any private funds. In 2004, the general election grant for each of the two major party presidential candidates was about $75 million. In 2008, the grant is estimated to be about $85 million.

$84 million: Estimated spending ceiling and public funds that will be allocated to 2008 major party nominees who participate in the public funding system.[12]

[12] “Presidential Spending Limits: ‘If the Election Were Held in 2007,’” Federal Election Commission Web site; and calculations from “Presidential Election Campaign Fund,” Federal Election Commission Web site. The Federal Election Commission will not provide official spending ceiling figures until 2008.

How much money would a candidate get this year if they opt in to public financing?

$84.1 million (In 2004, candidates were eligible to receive $74.62 million for the general election. The FEC adjusts for cost-of-living.)

Hey. Frankly the reason I'm writing this is because I'm annoyed with something.

Just because McCain raised 84 million doesn't mean the limit is 84 million. I was suspicious when you gave me that figure a few days ago because I couldn't find any laws about it on Google, but now, this article about McCain raising this much confirms my suspicions.

It seems to me that Mccain raised less than Obama because he has less supporters, not because the maximum for public financing is 84 mil.
