Im a noob so dont expect anything too helpful from me. :)

Anyway im thinking of downloading trying Mint today.
Its based off ubuntu gusty and uses the same software repositories.

Im hoping some of the stuff i couldnt get to work on ubuntu studio will work on this.

A LUG isn't just about a group of Linux experts getting together. It's about all Linux users no matter their experience / knowledge in it. So anyone who is interested in Linux is welcome here.

As for your Wi-Fi, if your NIC is based on a Atheros chipset is bound to work as Ubuntu usually enables the proprietary Hardware Access Layer (HAL) for these devices. With the exception of Gobuntu which only uses open-source, freely available software.

I think Mint does not follow this ethic concerning drivers, so it probably will support your card if its Atheros-based anyway out of the box. Mounting most USB devices should not be a problem either.

Dapper was really good to me.
When i moved to feisty fawn some stuff was a real hassle for me to get working again,if at all.

I havent tried gusty yet.
Mabey i should just stick with LTS releases.:)

edit-as for mint,they have a light version that doesnt contain patented software..

Of course, you can get either open-source or proprietary drivers after installation. Even if they aren't included out of the box.

Finished up my mint install.
I like the overall feel and additions.


However they decided to force you to use their controls,you cant change the look of them.
Changing them to more popular themes simply break the control GUI.

I may just use ubuntu gutsy.

@Llama: Never tried Mint. I'm using Gutsy just now.
@Dopefish: No problem with the help ;). I just use Gnome terminal and my shell is zsh. I used fish for a while, which was a nice colourful shell, but I love the power of zsh.

It looks like slab or a variant of it.

Fedora is a nice distro, lots of eye candy and really quite stable.
