Will 3D Realms ever offer digital distribution?
I'm not saying that 3D Realms should try and rival Steam in offering downloadable games. I'm asking if 3D Realms will ever offer THEIR games for downloads, and possibly a few others that they have close ties with?

I would like to see it, but I bet it wouldn't happen until DNF was launched.

We've had downloads for many years now. Heck, we even had a way to download registered games back when we were on Software Creations, and that's been over 10 years now.

I think he meant as far as Steam downloads, is where I think he was going.
Nice translation made by yours truly, thank you.

I know what he meant. But we do have games on Steam already. Prey, Max Payne 1/2. As for future that's unknown.

Well, I encourage you guys to think about it. Rott on Steam would be great for me.

EDIT: On further consideration, I'd rather have a rerelease in retail of some of the Apogee games. You can't even run Steam on Win 98 anymore, and that's the last Windows OS to have some form of DOS (and I'm using it still).

Steam is quite buggy with Integrated graphics and some other cards, when I downloaded Half Life 2 demo it had 1 second freeze ( is it just me please answer that ) and even with Intel gma 900 my PC had a blue screen. Never had that problem with 3D Realms produced games. .

Upgraded though

No blue screen with demo now ( what cause BSOD )

I'd love to. I can't. We use Yahoo store, and their store has a limit on how large a downloadable can be. Duke3D is over that limit. Yeah, we've looked at other options, but Yahoo works best in terms of price they charge per sale and other issues.

Apogee/3dr megapack on Steam FTW!

Sounds like it would be a good idea to me, maybe like the Id pack when DNF comes out...

You've been here long enough - you should know better. That won't happen. Rights for all these old games are a real mess. This is not new, it's been discussed numerous times - and the msgs in this forum go back 10 years now.

If we were to repackage the titles and offer them in a compilation it would require renegotiation of the contract. There's so many different authors wanting their piece of the pie (rightfully so), that to compensate all of them would mean the actual profit on the thing would be so small, it wouldn't be worth it for the extremely niche market that product would sell in.

Almost all of our games are either still for sale, or are already released as freeware (that can be anyway), so as much as I would like to see this happen, I don't see it happening.

I used to think that way. Then I realized how unrealistic it would be and stopped thinking like that.

So many rumours about the XBL version that is safe to say it will happen, but when?

Can we keep the thread on track, please? There is an existing thread for discussions on the rumoured XBLA version of Duke3D. Thank you.

I would like to see something similar to Steam from 3D Realms, but I guess that ain't happening. It needs resources, and I don't think that is something in the radar right now.

You mean our OWN variant of Steam? While I don't run the company and don't make the actual decisions on stuff like that, I can't see us doing our own.
