Crystal Caves / Secret Agent problem
Sorry for English...
When I run Crystal Caves or Secret Agent, I see only coloured lines and stripes; with the previous computer all was well - can anyone tell me what could it be? Thanks.

However, here's a very little introduction of myself: I like both playing and trying to developing PC games :-) my favourite Apogee game is ROTT... and I find some music from nearly all games simply wonderful.

As the resident "Apogee/3DRealms Classic" and all-around genius I've got two ideas as to why this is happening:
a) You video card has poor EGA support. Do other EGA games work on your computer?
b) The games probably use some EGA hacking to speed the graphics up (quite common back then) and your video card doesn't allow this.

It's probably one or the other, anyone got any other suggestions?

It could also be that your CPU is too fast for the game (use Moslo or some other CPU crippler) Or your Bios needs to be tweaked (I heard some old games dislike fast DRAM speed's)If you really wan't to play an old game, run it on your "previous" computer, and if that thing was thrown out, dig up a 486/386/Tandy in someones trash (office/school dumpsters are treasure troves for old gems like that, just look out for the broken glass/needles/coffee mugs

The problem is that your video card is not correctly emulating EGA video modes. There won't be jack you can do about it, I'd wager - I can't imagine any company wanting to mess with adding support for EGA programs now.

I had the exact same problem with my PC's previous video card: a Tseng Labs ET4000/W32p 2MB PCI. Funnily enough, running Crystal Caves/Secret Agent under Windows 3.11/9x in a full-screen DOS-box fixed the problem. Give that a shot (or running under DOS if you were running it under Win9x).

I'm almost positive both those games work on my Matrox Millennium 1... but of course that is an old card, and you have a newer matrox

This brings me back to a time a few months ago on my friends computer. This may be similar to what you are talking about but here goes. We were playing Secret Agent and you know how it works when you destroy a satellite dish. The screen turns red. Well apparentally when this happens on my friends computer, it messes up the screen totally. The game screens is stretched out and the whole thing basically looks like garbled images. Crystal Caves seemed to be fine though since there wasn't anything that turned the screen colors like that. This only happened when you would detroy a satellite dish though.
