The more bandwidth that's used, the better. PreyHQ is run on a dedicated server that costs me about as much monthly as 5 copies of Prey would. I'd certainly hate to see nobody take advantage of it.

Problem is some people say your site is down when it's not. Is it possible your site went down for a few moments and that's when the guys from Neowin saw it, and marked the first link in the article I linked to as "down".

It's possible that they tried linking directly to the files which produced an error message, or a "forbidden" notice. Beyond that, those links have been fully operational since the files were posted.

edit: It's also possible that they tried to right click + save the files - that creates an error which makes it seem as if the file is missing (again due to hotlinking protection)

Simply clicking on the links works wonders

Well I'm the one who did the article and that added the three Video download links as George wanted and the Screenshot link. And I gave the exact links George gave us in his first post, I don't think Neowin personally tried to link directly. Even if they tried and saw wasn't working, they wouldn't have put "seems down" because it's obvious that it works if you don't link it directly.

Okay here are some comments I've had up to now:

"It was THE game to see at the E3"
"Impressive title. Interesting weapons and enemies. Story seems solid and the gameplay looks rather good."
"Looks good."
"2 good looking doom3 engine games in development. shame about quake4."
"from this vid it looks very nice! i liked that gravity path."
"yeah it looks good"
"graphics are good."

Well, if anyone experiences problems (or finds reports of problems) go ahead and send a PM my way. I typically check many of the sites and forums that have our links posted, and only Neowin has reported them as down.

Actually I contacted them while this post was on Previewing Mode, so count the first link as reported "non-down"!

I tried yesterday (Sunday afternoon Eastern Time) and I could not get to PreyHQ. I tried again today and it was fine.

George, I don't know if you want to hear other comments, but here are some other:

"now thats what doom 3 should of been"

"From seeing what I just saw, and from also reading the cover story in the latest Computer Gamer magazine, this game looks pretty damn amazing IMHO.

The ability to walk on walls alone is something I think is going to add to the overall gameplay itself personally.

Then again, I am among the chosen few that did not hate DIII and actually enjoyed it. So maybe I am just keeping on open mind and actually do realize it is after all just another First Person Shooter meant to entertain, and am from the school of thought that not every title released has to change the face of gaming as we know it.
"

"Game looks pretty decent, but I couldn't really tell from the shoddy video lol"

"good lord that game looks fun, that truly is what d3 should have been like."

I dont understand why you would want people to promote a video that is dark and looks crappy, especially after all the flack Doom3 took. This is people's first look at the game, it should be a high quality file, you can only make a first impression once. To me the HL2 binks are the gold standard, they look just like the game is running on your computer.

doesn't need to be bink, a wmv, avi, mpeg, ... can also be played in fullscreen, and is less filesize.

and the video is coming within 2 weeks through xStream.

Am I the only one who thinks this "First impression is the most important" stuff is just bullshit? At least thats not how it works on me. Heck I need to realy think hard to remeber my first impressions of people, movies, games, anything. To me the last impression is what counts.

It's hard to have a last impression with people and with games. Your last impression would be when you are finished playing the game.

I think it's no bullshit, if they show a crappy video at the beggining, not even 50% of the people who saw the first video will want to see the (better) second one, so first impression is important in life (gaming industry). imo.

Of course that's true but in that case the first impression is the last one in that case. I am talking about all that can't repair the first impression talk. actualy should have written latest rather then last.

I guess my point is if you watch this version and are not impressed with it, then watch the higher quality version you don't go like how "Does not matter that it looks great now, it looked like shit when I saw that crap hand camera version a week ago." Its another matter if the first impressions scares you so much you wont even give it a second chance but if you don't give it a second chance when the first one you saw was in such poor image quality I don't know what.

I don't think it's as explicit as that. You won't consciously refuse to be impressed, it just won't have the same emotional impact on you the second time around.

So you'll see the gameplay mechanics in the low-res video, and you'll get to admire the graphics in the high-res video, but those two moments will be separate, instead of being gelled together as part of one giant "wow" moment.

I don't see what was the hurry to release a video though. Could have just waited for the upcoming one, and then we could have spread. The present video is nice, but I think the upcoming one would have seduced and hooked more people.

My bad, I thought 3DR released it.

I still find it weird George asked us to spread a shaky cam video when he knew a new better one was coming.

Consider it a taste of things to come. People are always on the lookout come E3 for new, innovative products that they can put down in their wishlist - and Prey wouldn't be one of them if there was nothing for people to see.

Comprehending the way Prey plays requires people to see the game in action. If it was just another typical shooter, then the previews that popped up earlier would have been enough. 3DR and HH didn't have anything ready, so while they prepare something for us (and who knows? maybe it'll have a little something extra ) the goal to spread the shakycam vids around should help those who couldn't visualize the game properly.

As far as I know, it's not even 100% decided what en when they are going to release it.

So be patience and spread the word about prey so that the moment the HD version of prey is released all sides go down due to to many people wanting to download it.

And I assume that the HD version will be available for normal download in no time.

I think Scott said they'd be releasing it via MoviesXStream within a week or two. They also said they'd release a normal version (for download, but not as high quality).

EDIT: Well, it's not new media exactly, but an IGN/G4 video presentation made its way on the net recently, and guess what? Looks like direct-feed footage to me It appears later in the clip here: http://media.pc.ign.com/media/681/681912/vids_1.html

Higher resolution versions can also be downloaded for paying subscribers. I may look into cutting out the high quality Prey footage and hosting it on PreyHQ if enough people care (though, once again, it's really nothing new - just a *lot* better looking. You can see that the environments really are better lit than they appeared in the shakycams)

That reaction seems normal enough. The E3 presentation's main purpose (imo) was to get the creative juices flowing in our heads. What we got to see was 11 minutes worth of operators. It's a lot like giving someone interested in math a '+' and '-' symbol, and showing them 2 or 3 possible combinations. If you have an imagination, you'll be able to see how many possibilities there really are.

We're not even scratching the surface here, folks
