neither do I, I don't know how to do many sector effectors yet. I can do water, teleporters, and I built an elevator but it was Really messed up. I ordered the build engine guide book from amazon, which basically should answer all our questions, but I ordered it weeks ago and it hasn't arrived yet

What types of doors were you looking to build? Basic DOOM-style? Swinging hinge doors? Star Trek-style? Please be more specific, since I cannot tell you accurately which style you're looking to do. I can do a vertical split door, which is not much more complex than a DOOM door, just that it's two doors that one half goes up, and the other goes down. I can do a lot of door styles, but you just have to say which style you're looking to build.

Personally, I need to build swing- doors, but I don't know what type Oak Man wants to make, and he has the same question.

Swinging door, ala Hollywood Holocaust? Not a problem. It basically involves pivot point sectors, and some sector effectors pointed in certain directions to work. It can be tricky at first, but once you catch on to the direction the sector effector faces, which is your pivot point, then just use the SE Tags as follows: Your Hi-tag value must be a unique value from 0 to 999, your lo-tag value must be 11 for your SE, and the SE sprite must be on the hinge side of the door, and must face away from the direction it's being opened with. For you Sector Tag, make sure your lo-tag is 23, inside the door sector. Make sure that the door sector DOES NOT touch the sector opening, or you'll have some weird results. Also, if you add a door noise, make your your Music / SFX sprite has the same high and low tag so your door will make the same sound when it opens and closes. That's your basic swinging door. I tried to use Lehman's terms as much as I could, but there are tutorials on this all over the place.

But for the most part it's a good handbook that i still use espically after have not building for a while.

Yes, I did get the book by Matt Tagliaferri, and it's already helped me to do things that I couldn't before.

Depends on whether you're adding tags to a sprite or a sector.

In 2D mode, aim at the sector where you want to add a tag. Press 'T' to enter a low tag. For example, if you want the level to end when the player steps into it, press 'T' and type '65535' and enter (left enter key, not right-enter. You should see "[0,65535]" in the sector if you did it right).

If you want to make a simple, Doom-type door, type 'T' and enter '20' (in 2D mode). Different numbers will make the sector do different things. There should be a list of sector tags in the Build help manuals.

To add tags to a sprite, aim at the sprite in 2D mode and press either Alt+T or Alt+H and then enter a number. Make sure the mouse is close enough to the sprite so that it flashes.

The Sector Effector is a multi-use sprite whose function changes depending on what low-tag you give it. Give a Sector Effector a lowtag of 4 and it makes the lights in that sector flicker on and off. Give the SE a lowtag of 12 and you can control the lights with a switch that is linked to it through tag.

3D mode hit p and choose a pallete #. Doesnt really work too well in highres though unless there is a skin defined in its place.

That's the book ID number when you order a book in most places.

And the book is a big help, but as i said in an earlier post, that there are mistakes in the book, but not that many. So when you run into a problem with the book or need info that's not in the book, come on back for more help ,we'll be here for yah.

You've to make two sectors (with the same shape). Then, you have to put a SE lo-tag 7 on each sector in the same place (as example, if both sectors are 16x16 squares, and you put the first SE lo-tag 7 exactly in the 15x15 position on the grid of the first sector, you have to put the another SE exactly in 15x15 of the other sector).

Give them the same hi-tag, and then give the surface sector a ST lo-tag equal to 1 and the underwater sector a ST lo-tag equal to 2.

Then, put cool textures and, obvioulsy, put a water texture on the floor of the surface sector and on the ceiling of the underwater sector

Ah... not that I mean to nag... but, while you're buying a buildhlp booklet, try buying some nice, thick grammar books. I really can't stand 5 year-old writing. (I used to be a part of the KOL ROF, please, it's hard to be polite.)

Okay, let's try to avoid making this thread go in the down spiral direction. I believe that Matt Tagliaferri was a phenomenal author, and his book is made official by 3DR, maybe the Levelord made that book an authorized book at the time. I have his book, AND the Unauthorized Build Guide for Duke 3D as well. Both seem to go hand in hand to create some of the best maps I've ever done way back in the day. Right now, if I could go back into Duke 3D again, I would build some maps that may even blow some of today's FPS game maps away. I just have to consider playing games that are 10 years old or so, just gotta adjust to going back to the good ol' days again.

I believe your talking about respawn points, all you have to do is place the sprite 'R' in the place you want something to spawn.

Use a touchplate or a switch to active the respawn sprite. give the touchplate lotag a unique number, give the repawn sprite the same lotag number and the give the respawn sprite hitag the number of the sprite that you want to spawn.

Now... if your not talking about enemy spawnpoints, to set your own spawnpoint, *smiles, since it's the first question he get's to answer* aim the cursor shape at the area you want to spawn at, and hit scroll lock. Simple. Easy. Don't you read buildhelp?

What exactly do you mean by standalone ?

You could name your maps E1L1, E1L2(or E2L1, E2L1) etc and/or change user.con to refer to your map files instead.

AFAIK, you can also add episodes with EDuke32, instead of just replacing the current ones, I believe it supports upto 8 episodes.

If you want to make a build game instead of requiring Duke3D, then you have to replace all of the sounds, the music, the textures and models/sprites. You can't legaly distribute any of the contents from Duke3D. You can distribute your episode perfectly legaly with JFDuke3D or Eduke32 without requiring Duke3D so long as you don't distribute any Duke3D content and you follow the terms of the Build engine license and the GPL.

Had the Build engine been licensed under the GPL you could even charge money for the thing.

The GPL requires you to release(or atleast make available upon request) the source code to your (potentialy) modified version of JfDuke3D/Eduke32 and the modified cons.

The Build engine license additionaly requires that you don't charge any money for it and that you only distribute on the internet. In addition to that it requires that you give credit to Ken(Which he deserves).

thanks for the info but what i meant by stand alone was like one user level after another
ex:
say i was working on an 8 level episode for dn3d.but when you beat the first level,you are then put at holywood holocaust instead of going to the second level of the episode im working on.

how could i make it like, i guess ,sequencial?

The easy way is to (as said above) name the map files e1l1,e1l2 or e2l1,e2l2 etch., then those maps will over ride the Duke3d maps.

Or the other way is go into user.con scroll down to where the menu section is and put in your own map names.
