Absolutely not, by saying that you reveal that you have not read the article and seen the screenshots.

You have to remeber this uses the Doom 3 engine so does Doom 3, this is a dark sci-fi shooter that same hold true for Doom 3.

But in all other ways we are talking about two entirely different games both grapics wise and gameplaywise.

That's a subjective judgement, and even after noting everything you've said I still think the enemies in the two games look very similar. It's to do with the skin tones, the harshness of the lighting, the way normal maps are used.

Hmmm...

I have seen the screenshots, and yes I have read the article., and I still think the game itself looks like Doom 3. That isnt a bad thing.

I also remember somebody (george broussard) saying that an engine can be molded and assembled into whatever a developer wants, so take that as you will.

I have admitted to it looking like Doom 3 to an extent, namely to the extent games from the same sub-genre and with the same engine look the same, but nothing more than that.

And that is definetly a good thing.

Saying they look more similar than that would be like saying that Quake and Duke3D look identical.

Yeah, it's still really dark. That's much different from Doom III ("The Dark Mod" lol)

I seriously think Carmack should kick himself in the ass for his lighting technique. Far Cry had somewhat of the same type and it was still bright and beautiful.
Farcry is set on islands, and doom is set in malfunctioning research facilities , or Hell.

I agree with John and others that say that the environments we've been shown in the screenshots look like Doom 3. Cold, dark metal corridors with metal grate floors, thick steel cables running along the floor, steel-plated walls, etc. The similarities are readily apparent.

The characters we've seen aren't entirely Doom 3-- there's a little Unreal 2 in there. It's unfortunate that two upcoming AAA titles each feature spooky little girls, who's appearances both "ring" a bell.

That said, the article spoke of environments in Prey dissimilar from those in Doom 3. I'll be interested to see those environments.

Half or dozen screenshots of an unfinished game aren't enough for any solid conclusions to be drawn about the finished product. FACT. There really is a lot of crap being talked around here about lighting, Doom 3 and similarities, imagined or otherwise.

Even IF it is a doom 3 clone (which I seriously doubt it is), who cares. If the gameplay is great I don't care what I am playing, as long as I have fun playing it.

There are similarities, unquestionably. But Prey is far, far more organic, as it takes place on a living creature (the huge ship itself). It just so happens that the 2-3 levels used in this preview were some of the lesser organic ones.

Also, the game has serious and dramatic play differences from Doom. I classify Doom's innovation as flashlight gameplay, as the flashlight was integral to the game. Not so at all with Prey. And there are many other key gameplay differences, such as portals, wall walking, spirit walking, death walk, AI, a sidekick (the hawk), the way the story is told (no PDAs!), vehicles, gravity effects, etc.

Hey Scott

Great too hear the look of the screen shots are more of the interior levels, and that there will be more organic areas to explore. The question of it looking like Doom 3 is valid, but I think if two games are made with a sci-fi theme there are bound to be some similarities, but they can still be different. It all comes down to the artwork that may make them look similar but not the same. The look is part of the feel of the game, and I am sure the gameplay matters most to both HH and 3DR!

Those screens looks pretty awesome, and I really dig the mood set in those screens.

However, if the game is expected to ship in 2006, I would seriously consider upping the texture detail on the characters. Especially the characters with lots of visible skin, because the illusion of "skin" breaks when the character gets close(especially visible on the "part man - part monster" character).

That being said, I would love a game that can re-create some of the "feel" I got from when I watched the first alien movie

I think we should stay positive undtill we know more, or have the game in our hands. THEN we can bash the game for being a boring Doom3 ripoff(Like others, I have to admit I found Doom3 to be too repetitive, because of the non-stop killing of enemies in a world with only "static" enviroments).

Really, The gameplay elements that Scott mentioned above prove that Prey will be something really special.

This is the least we should expect from a game produced or developed by 3DREALMS

Scotts answer makes me want this game!

The most annoying "feature" in Doom was the flashlight. If you switch to your weapon it is so dark, that you can't even see the enemy. The only evidence of the enemy is the crosshair fading red.

No pda's, no flashlight and organic levels
You really do know what made the game Doom so bad.
So I'am very excited to see the Doom Engine in a good game
