You know, I still have a 'Duke Nukem Forever' DVD 3DRealms distributed back in E3 2000 (or was it 99?) It's better than a preorder 'cause you can, at least, lay your hands on it and play the in-game movies on the TV.
You're probably referring to the DVD that was handed out at E3 2001. All that was on it was the DNF E3 2001 trailer, and the Max Payne E3 2001 trailer. That's it.

I've seen it crop up on ebay and on sites for people making up stories like they have some pre-release DNF copy.

It's somewhat rare, but not THAT rare. There were thousands printed. I doubt you'd get rich off of it.
Well, people do stupid things. Especially if they never heard of this.

Still, a cool thing to have nonetheless.

I am critically debating if I should camp outside a store if my reservation somehow vanishes WID. I know it seems a little juvenile now that I am older to be doing shit like this but… God damn! It’s a relic from my teen/childhood that needs closure. If I never get my hands on this game a little part of me will die. The part that still thinks magic exists, the part of me that still thinks if I try hard enough I can fly, the part of me that thinks Celine Dion and Nickelback are ninja spy monsters sent from the hell dimension to secretly destroy all of mankind with their poisonous genocide some people call “music”.

Seriously, I think that last one is true. If a full grown man were to uppercut Dion right in the face with all his might, I am pretty sure her head would dislodge from her robot body and you all would shit your pants HARD when you see she is actually a small Octobrain.

(back on topic)

I should get some video of me 0wn1ng everyone in line when it hits stores. I might even start early… Anyone here have webspace for vids or audio of me doing ***** up shit in the name of 3DR? If DNF cult members won’t help me out I will consider it blasphemy.

Lets get creative. LOLZ! Who here wants to have DNF meetings the first Sunday of every month at 8:00PM somewhere (Toronto)? Are you thinking what I am thinking??? DUKE-CON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are we not working towards the same goal here? (To have faith that one day we will all be playing DNF) Anyways, organized religion isn’t my thing. I am too much of a short sighted chaotic maverick to even think about joining a cult. You have to be careful what you say you’re affiliated with on the net now a days there’s no such thing as privacy anymore. If it got out that I breed unicorns for underground pit fighting, I would be a dead man.

Right.

But I do like that meeting, providing it's somewhere in Europe.

I also don't mind a meeting in LA or Madeira Country since there is a chance I will be going there for vacation this summer.

I reserved my copy of DNF at EB about 5 years ago...but I was young and nieve and didn't know any better. I think it was about 6 months later when I realised that the game wasn't going to be released anytime soon so I used the money for another game. Can't remember which game though.

Well, if you are willing to spend that much energy on the issue, why not camping outside 3DRealms' HQ and stay there until they release something for us to see? (or play!)

We could hire some strippers to perform a show as well. While the staff are entertained, there's always a chance of being able to slip inside the building and grab a tech demo.

That if we don't get caugh by the stripper's lure ourselves... Anyway... We're talking about Duke, eh? Almost forgot!

Maybe it's for the next project. Not necessary DNF. But I'm too a little worried about this massive hiring.

edit: Hmm, maybe I'm not so right about 'massive'. On gamasutra only one job. Programmer that is. I'm exaggerated 'cause of shacknews posts, I guess.

The only project they are doing internally is DNF, and GB said they will allways keep doing only one internal project. They have some things planned true, but they are not working on it.

I know. I meant of course future project. Thus if they already hiring for future project then DNF is near. Pure fan speculation.

But, as always, - it means nothing. We don't have enough information to judge.

Only in the longtime period. In the short period it'll be just step back.

Wel, I think it's save to say that 3DR is not going to hire someone and then not let them work because DNF isn't done yet (who would do that anyway), so if they hire someone that person will be put on to work on DNF and after that of course also on the new project.

This of course taking into account that 3DR will not have two projects running internally as GB once said.

Well, considering DNF's development time there is no such thing as a short period.

You don't hire brand new programmers and level designers to finish up a project. You hire programmers and level designers when you need to make a game. It's counter-productive, from what I understand at least, to hire programmers and level designers to finish off a game because they don't have the history nor the experience working with the game.

The kind of hiring GB is doing only makes sense if the work on DNF (as in making the actual game, not the tech/tools behind the scenes) is in the beginning or early middle stages.

But that is simply wrong, George has already said that it is NOT counter-productive. They have been making content for it since January 2003. That is almost 3.5 years already.

Almost every major publisher project continues to ramp up the number of people working on a title all the way up to the testing phase.

It doesn't take that long to come onto a project and be productive unless you are talking about core tech programming. The current state of a game has little effect for everyone else.

He said that around year ago(or more). If they have only one step to finish the project then it will be counter-productive. Well, depends on the job he's going to do. Hiring people generaly is the good thing, the bad thing is why they hiring people for the project that must be in some advanced stage and why those weren't hired earlier.

I'm not saying that it's bad. I don't know. I'm just worrying about DNF if the people still(and quite often) being hired for this project(if there is no some pre-development research for another project). You know, bad thoughts coming to mind...

Edit: NotWieder washed away all the bad thoughts. Thanks!

Everyone thinks we are looney enough as it is waiting for this game. All you guys pointing and cackling at shop keepers on the day of release will just seal the reputation for all time.

DNF preorders will have to sign a mental health act notice as well as their receipt.

Geo-King, very awesome story! I read it yesterday, then registered and wanted to reply, but account wasn't validated yet.

Was just viewing all the dates, from way back in 2005 to now and this topic seems to be still going strong.

When you first pre-ordered the game back in 2005, and when you thought the game would be released within the next few years and still, no DNF... what were your thoughts?

I think I pre-ordered the game like I have no idea how long ago... probably like 5 years ago or longer.

Anyways... great story!
