Now I realize. Of course it's not a DOS game; BOS is Balls of Steels after all

By that logic, Gears of War, Halo, Starcraft, Call of Duty, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and any other game sold in BestBuy was made by them.

Because they are the publishers.

Activision sells Quake 3 & Doom 3 which are also developed by id software. Same deal.

If the games run too fast on your computer (or don't run at all - even if DosBox is used) you may try "VDMSound" which is made to make old games run on new systems.

VDMSound 2.1.0

*VDMsound won't help on 64bit systems since there is no 16 bit support

*Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think VDMsound would work with Balls of Steel since it's not a dos game, which most of this discussion has centered around

Also, the majority of the games use a default DOSbox config with minor tweaks, which should be enough, and Joe has tested tested them for sure.

Which reminds me, is there a solution in place for the Crystal Caves overscan border issue? discussed here

A note about Shadow Warrior.

The file from the registered store has been updated to include the CD Audio, via ogg compressed files. If you buy the game now, you will get it with the CD Audio enabled.

If you bought Shadow Warrior from our store between June 5 and July 9, 2009, there's an update file for you. Download this, and install it to the same directory the game is installed to, and you'll get the CD audio. Note: It will overwrite your DOSBox config file, so if you've made any sort of changes to the settings, you'll need to back up yours first before installing this.

There you go. Some more work on this project after I've been out of work now for 6 weeks.

If anyone happens to solve the speed problem with BOS on Vista 32bit, please share! Setting up a virtual machine is a bit of a pain.

Not sure why but setting compatibility to Win95 worked.. once. Then setting it to Win2k worked, once. Makes me want to revert back to XP just for the sake of this game!

I didn't put user levels in there. There's user LEVEL EDITORS, but not levels themselves.

Question Re: 3D Realms Online Store overhaul
Little question, Joe.

Did you base your Duke3D download build on the GOG.com one, or start from scratch with original CD files?

Just I purchased the GOG version recently and noticed their patched DUKE3D.EXE matched the checksum of a cracked exe made from using a pretty common No-CD crack (not to mention they included a blank CDROM.INI), lol. So is the 3DR version exactly the same in this case? Having already a CD original and the GOG download, I'm not very inclined to also purchase 3DR's build just to find this out for myself.

Thanks!

Yeah, matches the GOG one, thought so. Thanks for the tip, Qbix.

Part of me did wonder whether it would be uniquely cracked from scratch when re-released, say to possibly get rid of the CDROM.INI dependency. There's a cracked EXE for Death Rally which does just that.

it is not really a crack if the publisher alters the file. there had to be two versions of the exe a drmed version and a non drm copy.

Re: 3D Realms Online Store overhaul
Thanks for the suggestion. I wasn't actually intending to buy anything at this moment in time, but I wanted to toss a reminder that the main promoted link wasn't acting the way it's supposed to be, to those who are interested.

BTW, if anyone's interested also, you can find an alternate patched EXE for Death Rally on this page (scroll to the bottom and look towards the top of the screen to spot it). Aside from cracking the CD check, this EXE has a couple more advantages over the more basic crack in existence...

1) The CDROM.INI dependency is eliminated so that you don't even need the file,
2) You can start or continue a game much more "cleanly" (in other words, no "Insert CD-ROM" window flashing briefly for a nanosecond accompanied by a honking horn effect).

And last but not least..... if anyone would prefer a full lossless Shadow Warrior soundtrack to use with the game, I could create a BIN/CUE containing the music only (ripped from an original SW CD), write a replacement DOSBox config to use with it, zip it and up it somewhere if there's demand for it. Only question is: would Mr Siegler (and co?) be cool with this?

Maybe if it did get onto GOG the 3DR store might drop its own price in response. I don't know who decided on SW being $10 compared to almost everything else being $6, nor do I understand the reasoning behind it. Is it based on how recent a game is? Like games in '97 or later are pricier?

It might be a good idea to include a PDF of this with the Wolf 3D download, as it's quite interesting and very helpful with the less linear levels of the game.

This is strange indeed, as Duke 3D (a clearly superior title) is only 5,99.
