I have a request, could you include a portal gun? That shoots portals onto walls...like in the portal trailer from valve or similar to that? Maybe the primary for the wrench can be throwing portals like that, and the alt fire is making portals at your location. Just some things I would like to do.
Also... for a cool animation, just tommy's hand with like a spark or something would be sweet |

I've modified the wrench a bit for fun and I thought you guys might like it too. the wrench now cycles between portals, instead of picking the two spots then opening the portals then subsequently having to close both of them before opening a new pair, it now simply drops the oldest portal and opens a new one at your location. Your charactor now swings his wrench when you open the portal as well, some people had asked for other animations but frankly I'm lazy and something about swinging a wrench like a magic wand to open interdimensional portals just makes me laugh. The primary fire now also "fires" a portal, it will appear 100 game units away from whatever wall you are looking at, this portal is even more prone to clipping errors than the normal one, however it's simply too fun not to have. Unfortunately until hh releases the sdk there isn't much more we can do, for example without being able to code a custom projectile, it is impossible for the "fired" portal to align with the wall ala the half life 2 portal gun. Finally, simply for ease of use I have placed the portal wrench in its own mod, simply unrar the Portal Wrench folder into your prey folder ( not the base folder ), then when you start the game up click on mods and you should see portal wrench listed, after activating it the wrench will be replaced with the portal wrench!

sounds good. I think in the valve vid, one portal stays the same while the other one changes when you fire, which could be an interesting way of doing it.
I would like to say, though, that rapidshare is the worst file hosting service in the history of the internet. It can't handle the fact that I'm on an isp that uses a cache server, so the download-per-user limit applies to a huge portion of my isp. Hence I can rarely download anything from rapidshare, including now... |

You can't make them stick to the walls as they need some space behind them. In other words it's not a flat surface, which is why they render correctly even when you are standing halfway into them.

as it says, don't unzip it into the base directory, unzip everything into the prey directory (including the "Portal Wrench" folder) and select it as a mod.

I see that, but the only thing it lists is PREY. Look, just start from the beggining, how do I install the modified portal mod correctly, and how do I run it?
Also, when I make a server with the normal portal mod it tends to change maps if people are in, even if I turn off pure server and punkbuster and turn on allow server side mods. Whats with that? |

Whoops, thats what I meant.
Anyways, its stable till my friend joins the server, then it just changed the map usually within 10 seconds after he joins for no reason, he also cannot see my portals.. but he can go through them. It tends to crash him to the main menu, any solutions? |

so..I'm a bit confused.. Does this mod work with the Prey demo? I assumed that mods wont work on the demo since that would give people incentive to buy the full game... which I intend to do.. but after seeing Valve's portal video I really want to try this out

Mods do work with the demo.... the original portal wrench(look at first post) does, and I even replaced the jukebox songs in the demo.

I intend to do my best once the sdk is released, as it was pointed it's basically impossible as the game surfaces are anything but regular. In the valve portal movie you'll notice everything is absolutely flat, and even then they never fire portals at edges, for example where the floor meets the wall. still I have some ideas for making it work, and at the very least I will be able to have the portal run parallel to the targeted surface instead of perpendicular to the viewing angle. (see attached diagram it makes more sense) If you want the mod I edited to work on the demo just take the script and def folders and drop them into the base folder DO NOT drop the pak000.pk4 in there or you will be very sorry.

it's a shame you can't open up portals underneath opponents. it would be amusing to open one up over a huge gap and another below an alien and see them drop. Thogh I imagine this effect could possibly be hard coded using the sdk, ie if the portal is on a surface below enemy and the enemy is intersecting it force them through the portal.

if you want a solid, playable demonstration of Portal, theres the game Narbacular Drop. It was made by DigiPen students. Valve hired them and now they are working on Portal. You can get it here.
I reccomend you go into options and change the resolution and make it fullscreen before playing. It would be sweet to have a mod like this for Prey. |
