I agree with Damien. Personally I think that a lot of people were frustrated by gameplay in DOOM 3 because they played it in a run&gun style and some of the gameplay elements and surprises were slowing them down. And because they considered it an oldschool run&gun shooter, they complained about flawed gameplay.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Wasn't it one of Doom 3's biggest flaws that it was a "neither fish nor flesh" game?
Not a fast paced shooter like the first two and not a survival horror or System Shock type FPS/RPG hybrid either (despite the logs and codes). Hopefully Doom 4 will be more focused.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
I don't want to bring the DOOM 3 - good or bad discussion over here. But personally I thought DOOM 3 did a great job. I mean, this complaint is true if you categorize strickly, in my opinion. "It's either a Painkiller or Deus Ex type of thing". I just took what I got and I was pleased with that.
But yeah, no wonders the next DOOM will be more focused and even though I love DOOM 3, I think and I believe most people will agree, bringing DOOM back to the classic action gerne is the right thing to do and I would really not expect id to screw it up.

Somehow, I take this as a given. With the exception of Doom2, Doom games always pushed the limits of current gen PCs.

The more I think about it, the more I think DOOM 4 should be bright and colorful like Classic DOOM. You can still have the feeling of tension and destruction with bright colors.

Developers need to understand that darkness is only frightening in real life. On a computer screen it's just annoying and tedious.

Very true, I don't think the darkness element really works anymore. Penumbra had darkness AND other things going on to make the situation intense.

Colors as in real life, which also demands difference in enviroments. And colorful monsters like in first games. Ok less pink is ok but otherwise stay the same. Cacodemons better keep their colors and blue blood!

Somehow I felt in a DooM 2 mood whenever I played FEAR 2 during the missions in the destroyed city.
I would love it if DooM 4 played a bit like FEAR 2. |

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
So thanks to the Extended Cut interview with Todd Hollenshead, we've got a little bit more stuff related to the new DOOM game. Here's the complete transcription, some parts may be paraphrased a bit or wrong to some degree, they are talking lightning fast there.
Geoff Keighley: Second project, you're working on DOOM 4 internally, right? Todd Hollenshead: Right. We're just calling it DOOM. Sort of "4" is sequential... it's not the original DOOM... Geoff Keighley: You may not call it "4"? Todd Hollenshead: May not call it "4". Geoff Keighley: But is it gonna be, you know sort of the same stories that we've seen in a previous DOOM games or is it a new story? Todd Hollenshead: Well, I think the construct is the same, so it's demons from Hell, and you're a guy, hell breaks loose and you've gotta survive, kill the demons. Geoff Keighley: DOOM is, you know, it's known for sort of a zig-zag you know corridor shooter which you know is great 10, 15 years ago but now people, you know they want the open world, they want the vehicles, they want that much more so how do you stay true with DOOM but still deliver the kind of gameplay people want to that? Todd Hollenshead: We think about you know, sort of tight first-person action experience, we know that we can do that and you know, we're gonna have some of that in Rage but it's gonna be so much more of a focus with DOOM as well... Geoff Keighley: Will there be vehicles in DOOM? Todd Hollenshead: I don't wanna go into vehicles yet... Geoff Keighley: See, I bet there's gonna be a tank or something like that. Todd Hollenshead: DOOM is DOOM and it really is I mean, to me it's sort of a grandfather of all the FPS games and all the shooter games and making it into something that's not a shooter would be just a travesty and a crime against humanity. So it is, you know, you’re a good guy, you’re fighting demons… Geoff Keightely: Will BFG be back? Todd Hollenshead: I can’t imagine a DOOM game without the BFG. I mean, I haven’t seen the model in the game yet but, I mean, if it comes that we have no BFG I’m gonna be like “Why don’t we have the BFG!?” just like you and anybody else would but, you know, we’ve got the Rage tech so we can open things up a bit, make things on sort of a more grand scale so you know, the way I sort of conceptualize of the game is that all the cool stuff that was DOOM extended for. There’s just an ability to do more with it. Geoff Keightely: So bigger enemies, bigger environments, I mean like having a squad working together, having, you know, cooperate like that? Todd Hollenshead: Those are all ideas that we’ve been talking about and… Geoff Keightely: I think it’ll be hot with DOOM Swat, it’s like everyone will go through the battle. Todd Hollenshead: I wouldn’t say “yes” or “no” about anything but so for now is that we’ll have to, you know, think about what is DOOM but with the Rage tech so we can do more with it and we’ll have a… I think it’s important for us that when we start talk about specific stuff in the game we’d like to have something to show about it.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Heh. Should have got rid of that, I know.
Alright, so things we got out of it: * Further indications that the next DOOM won't be called DOOM 4. * The idea behind the game is the same, you're a good guy killing demons from Hell. * Tight first-person action experience is the focus. * Possible vehicles? * BFG will be back. * It's gonna be DOOM on grand scale. * Possible squad action?

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Yeah, Quake 4 had some Call of Duty like elements. However, with idtech5, Doom 4 could probably have battles on a much bigger scale than what was in Quake 4.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Todd Hollenshead - id Update. Just a quick mention, something we already knew though:
Doom 4 is still in the early stages, so don't expect it any time soon. I still expect at least a little tiny bit of teasing media at QuakeCon 2009.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Shot or two, short teaser, all would be great. I'm bit skeptical on them showing anything of it, since Doom 4 is said to be better looking that Rage - in a sense that could work against Rage in PR mind.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
I doubt that's a problem. Take Wolfenstein. I know it's a Raven game but still it's a lot worse graphically than Rage. Still there will be a lot of buzz about both without a doubt. The next DOOM is a late 2010 (unlikely in my opinion), 2011 (or later?) game so it won't compete with Rage plus Rage will be more about the "new direction for id" rather than graphics so DOOM won't "steal" QuakeCon from it. And it seems like it's gonna work perfectly: they'll have Wolfenstein ready around summer (possibly?), start talking about specifics in Rage and give a peek into the future with DOOM. I sincerely hope I'm right.
On another note, id recently (March 2009) hired Paul Pepera (Linkedin profile, Portfolio site) as an Environment Artist for the next DOOM.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Very cool stuff. I would also assume that Seneca Menard would join the "next DOOM" team after they are done with Rage - or even share time between the two. Very very senior artist at id Software - awesome modeler.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Yeah, I saw that earlier in the other thread over at Software section, KJ posted it there. Seneca Menard is long time modo user, and it seem id favour it too alongside Maya and 3DS. Very cool stuff.
The thing that impressed me on Pepera's portfolio was his texturing skills and the lowpoly models. Other stuff was impressive too.

I don't recall anything like that and I don't think he saw it especially that id barely announced the game at QuakeCon around that time, 2-3 months after they started hiring for it. There was nothing they could show him anyway.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
He didn't see the game.
I don't remember exactly what he said, but he was talking about how id was developing the games (both RAGE and Doom 4), more so the fun little fake bits they did for humor on the show. Tim and Jace driving around in a Hummer shooting at things and running over cars (RAGE), and Tim and Jace, and the Doom 4 team, in a dark room taping a flashlight to a gun. Jace was commenting that he had never seen such a development style (something along those lines, I don't remember the exact quote) before.
