Re: When should the action start?
It would be nice to have some action immediately. But if the controls are a bit complicated then they might want to have some kind of optional training. I also would like to see a mini Duke movie (you can skip past it if you want to) that explains things. Perhaps this duke mini movie can follow the first fight.

Re: When should the action start?
Sort of like how F1 in the First game covered the story?
That would be a good idea. that way for those people who just want the game can do nothing and just game, while people with a love for story telling can view the back story.

I want a Doom 3 lengthed intro, that felt perfect to me. Basicly a stage where you get used to everything but shooting and then starts kicking some ass! |

Re: When should the action start?
Another thing that should be mentioned about Doom 3 is that you can in fact skip the intro level and skip right into the invasion.
That sounds like something that might fit DNF as well. |

Re: When should the action start?
Tbh i liked the start of games like Half-life, Doom 3 and others where you get to see your surroundings before chaos breaks loose, sometimes just to see how it has changed when you run across it later.
Also if DNF is to have a good level of interactivity the drawn out beginnings are a good way to have time to experiment (like playing the games machines, messing with the tv and music at the start of Prey where the actual story doesn't properly begin until the player is ready). However i would still like to see aliens burst in on duke so the player is dropped directly into the action, after all Duke is supposed to be the king of action. Therefore it's probably best to have a split beginning where the player can choose to start the game immediately or have another menu option to look around first before having the game events start, sort of like a prelude (eg. menu options like Kick-ass (skip to action) or Chew some bubblegum (take a look around), as we all know Duke only kicks ass when he's all outta gum .)

Re: When should the action start?
How about this, if you start the game on Peace of Cake, you get to have tutorial and a muck around?
One thing I will add in most games that gets to me, especially in most modern games (tomb raiders the worst) its that the player has too much time to muck around while finishing puzzles, and they end up killing all the monsters, and because of that, you know that you are safe. I like Damn I'm Good! on DN3D because there is a constant stream of baddys! It don't mater how many rockets you pump into them, you end up finding you kill the same spawn a few too many times! There was nothing like that in most games That I have played. DN3D +1 Challenge! + 3 Killer instinct

Re: When should the action start?
Start like god of war 2, right into the action during a very long boss fight. Very creative way to start a game.

Re: When should the action start?
something you should know about 3drealms: the action always starts very soon. in duke3d and shadow warrior, you were put in the middle of the action. in max payne and prey, you were given a very short beginning. dnf could do either of the two. i dont care. but, it should not try to have an extended beginning (like doom 3). dnf is just not that type of game imo. duke nukem is the kinda guy who just goes in there and kicks some ass. forget about complex plots and subplots (that's for max payne, not duke). my 2 cents...

Re: When should the action start?
I say do it like James Bond. Start right off with an intense action sequence then when thats over build of the exposition of the game in a normal manner.

Re: When should the action start?
DNF needs a prelude to the action. D3D didn't have it because it was 1996 and arcade-y FPSs were the norm. HL revolutionized FPS in this way, making FPSs more cinematic.
Obviously, certain scenarios lend themselves to instant action. If you're loading up a WWII game, you're already familiar enough with the circumstances and your expectations that you can dive right in. From what we know of DNF, instant action may feel abrupt. It doesn't have to be a tutorial (I don't think we'll need one), but I want a story set-up, and I want the game to provide genuine motivation for me to start shooting.

Re: When should the action start?
I recently read the official faq on DNF, and apparently, even though most of it's info is based on discussions about the old iterations of DNF, they said they would not have any training levels, and would have everything paced to let the player get the hang of the weapons. I don't know if that says anything about whether there will be an intro level or anything.
On an unrelated note, I was surprised to see that (at the time, this is old news) they wanted to include an ego meter because they liked how it enhanced the gameplay in Manhattan Project. |
