My point is (and Parkar and Firefly clarified), the video does not do a good job of highlighting Prey's unique gameplay features. The clips of portal navigation are so quick that I'm not sure the uninitiated gamer would understand what's happening. There's almost zero footage of the gravity elements and "impossible geometry". And I can't think of a single instance of puzzle-solving. That, and the fact that the story is supposed to be important, there's not a bit of narration or text that explains the game.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to paint a bleak picture. We know this game has the potential to special; I just don't think this teaser communicated that potential. So this opportunity may not have been capitalized on, but there will be other opportunities.
Exactly!

This trailer depicted some nicely cinematic, fast & furious sci-fi action. I like to think that was its job. True gameplay footage can really get in the way sometimes.

Does the Doom 3 engine somehow look better in fast-motion or is it just me?

You are right, but the trailer wasn't designed to be a complete commercial of Prey, it was designed to simply show that prey will be on the XBox 360 and just look interesting (which it did).
If you never heard about prey this trailer was designed so that you will start looking for more info about prey. At least, that is how the trailer appeared to me and it will do a good job IMO. For the average gamer that is. (And those are the majority of buyers out there I believe )

And besides, G4 can allways do a special about prey somewhere in the future.

You also have to keep in mind that this was shown on TV for the xBox 360, and mainstream people care less about cool puzzles and innovative gameplay then they do good graphics and blowing shit up.. I mean just look at the Halo series.

True, console players are not refined players in general.

Doesn't imply for all people though.

if the trailer was designed so the gamer would look for more info then they'd show more of the interesting stuff they have, I bet most people haven't even spotted the wallwalk because they saw it only for one second (on TV, so they can't re-watch it)
the gamer that is tired of first person shooters without innovative things is less likely look for more info after only seeing the TV trailer than if they showed one like we saw from E3.
this trailer may appeal to the "let's blow things up" kind of gamer... which the E3 video does less of. but then they could have shown a few more fast paced parts along with portals and wallwalks and in the middle a piece pasted in with the grandfather

What SyntaxN said, TV time is expensive (even if it's your TV channel) so they want a lot in no time at all.

And I don't think the trailer was designed to be informative of the content, just of that the game was coming.

I am sure there will be a more informative trailer in the near future.

why would they want to do that if they don't show its full potential?
they could have included some of prey's innovative things without extending time.

Although it has been explained allready here is the short version:
The trailer was created (and shown on TV) to inform the mainstream (read: the average gamer) gamer about prey, to tickle there sences and to make people search for it (i.e. look at the website). Not to let people know what prey exactly is, that will come later.

I hope this clears it up. (If I am wrong about this, which I doubt, then do remove this post. )

Use google and write MPEG-2 codec or MPEG-2 Player (the file requires MPEG-2 supported programs) You can find codecs for winamp and WMP or pretty much any other media player...
(^^I had to do this myself too, before i was able to watch it...)

you can even use it as a streaming server exchanging data via multicast udp or rtp.

Then I suppose you could say that the teaser was created to misinform the mainstream? Because those whose interest is piqued by your basic sci-fi shoot-em-up might balk at a headier game; likewise, those interested in an innovative game might shrug at the standard sci-fi shoot-em-up they were presented.

Regardless, the point is, you could have done both. Other games did both. One minute is plenty of time for an accurate introduction + sci-fi action.

"On Earth, Tommy tried to forget his heritage..."

Show Cherokee symbolism (tepees, peace pipes, totem poles)

"To save Earth, Tommy will have to forget much, much more..."

"GRAVITY..."

Show gravity manipulation

"PHYSICS..." (or some better descriptor)

Show wall-walking, other disorienting stuff

"BOUNDARIES..." (or some better descriptor)

Show portal stuff, out-of-body stuff

"FEAR."

Show your sci-fi action montage, spooky girl, grotesque monsters, etc

----------

I just threw that together, but the brains at 3dr and HH could have done something along those lines, imo.

It wouldn't necessariy mean that they're gonna buy the game just by seeing that trailer...
They could as well research the Internet for info, to see what it is about... I mean, i wouldn't buy a game before i've heard other peoples impressions or before reading some trusted reviews...

Not really, you can show of all the cool features there are, but not tell them what it all really is. You need more time for that. That''s why this is a short teaser (to tease people) and then make them look for more info about it. Of course, the site about the game must then be online first. Or at least have a link to the forums about it.

(although the 11 minute video is online now. )

why do you keep saying it's to inform people that prey is coming and they will look for more info? nothing is less true... people that aren't interested in standard shooters won't even look out for the game. (what do you think they will say? "man! I see a new run and gun shooter is coming up, and I don't like that genre anymore... I'll quickly look up more info about the game!"? I don't think so )
and one minute isn't too short to show the cool features... showing a wallwalk takes 5 seconds, a portal also 5 seconds, and a switch that turns around gravity another 5 seconds... then you have 45 seconds left to show various other things.

During the holiday, we were sent an email with a link as to where you can download the Prey Xbox 360 trailer that was on G4 the other night. We thought we'd give you that link, too.

http://prey.deviantuniverse.com/down...ey_Trailer.zip

It's an 18.4Mb download that's much better than your usual "shaky cam" video download. Enjoy.

Just to clarify, I don't think some teaser on some show on some small network is a huge deal. I do think, however, that there is something to be said about a first impression. If that teaser looked to some like a MOTS shooter, then when Prey asks for more attention, these gamers might pass Prey over. This would be especially unfortunate if that teaser did not accurately represent Prey.

Personally, that teaser alone would not entice me to find out more about Prey, but many people liked it. So no worries.
