Possible to stop Prey from connecting to Internet?
Every time I start Prey, it opens my internet connection. Since I'm only on dial-up, I would like to leave my phone line open if I'm just playing single-player. Is there a way to do this?

Unplug your phone cord from your computer before you open Prey.

Re: Possible to stop Prey from connecting to Internet?
Obviously...but it still tries to connect, which gives an error and causes other annoyances.
edited for a spelling error |

Re: Possible to stop Prey from connecting to Internet?
I would suggest to set your dialup connection settings to manual only, then Prey will try to connect but nothing will happen. And just create desktop / quicklaunch shortcut to establish your connection when needed...

Re: Possible to stop Prey from connecting to Internet?
open file named "hosts" in \windows\system32\drivers\etc\ with notepad
add "127.0.0.1 preymaster.humanhead.com" without the quotes, at the bottom. Ta-da! |

Ya, I wanted to mention that too.., but since this method was used for some of the not-so-legal-versions...

Re: Possible to stop Prey from connecting to Internet?
and this is not the best way to solve the general problem, this guys has a dialup connection and he doesn't want applications to dial internet when not connected. So the best way is to disable this feature in the Windows connection parameters.
So he won't have to add manually a line in the HOST for each app or block Prey in the firewall and then unlock it each time he wants to play in multiplayer... ![]() |

my advice is to configure windows properly so you don't get bored anymore with the dialup box. this is a windows configuration problem, not a game problem... check the internet options again, pay attention to each dialup profile in there and make sure they are all disabled for auto dialup, then I would check the properties of the dialup connection in my network place, maybe there is an option too (long time I didnt used the dialup ![]() hope that help and good luck ![]() |

Re: Possible to stop Prey from connecting to Internet?
Ok, found it!
Control Panel under Network Connections->Advanced->Dial-up Preferences...there is an Autodial tab, unchecked (in "Enable autodial by location" box) "My Location(the current location)." Now Prey runs without attempting to connect and I can connect with a desktop shortcut. Thanks one and all for your help. ![]() |
