Bring it! I've got paid vacation time set aside for this game. I had wondered to myself if the portal technology would let you do things like that. I've some other ideas, but I'll wait to see if they show up in the game.

There was one bit where the level designer constructed the layout of the portals such that when you came out of the portal, you saw what you think is someone else going into one, so you fire at it, and it ends up being yourself. What's brilliant about the level design there is that you get to see just enough to let you know someone is there, but not enough to know who it is, so if you're heavy into deathmatch and aren't paying attention, you're likely to just shoot it because it's moving, and you shoot yourself. Quite funny.

I was just about to ask what it would be like in deathmatch, and you've answered already That must be really funny, to chase down a guy thinking your going to get a kill....only to end up shooting youself because you are too trigger happy.

Even more fun: what if your the same model as someone else? Imagine the confusion!

Well... shit. I'm trying my darndest to not watch these vids. I want the game to be largely a mystery. And I really don't want what happened with Doom 3 to happen again....

... BUT IT'S SO HARD WHE YOU KEEP RELEASING VIDEOS LIKE THIS!!!

Jesus, that video was cool as hell. Loved the part where he keeps following himself. Although, the part where throws up may have been a bit much... but it was still pretty cool. Jeez, I haven't been this pumped for a game since I first saw Doom 3 test videos.

I swore I wouldn't watch anything but the first video, but the promise of gravity flipping convinced me otherwise. That's it for sure, though. There were several moments in this one I would rather have seen for the first time while playing the game.

The puzzle with the moving room inside a portal was cool. It felt like a puzzle that would be in a Zelda game. That's not a bad thing.

As was said to someone else, if you truly don't want to be spoiled, now is probably the time to stop reading the forums, or stop reading altogether. If anything, this kind of stuff will happen more than less as the buildup to release happens.

This video was great.

The use of portal's is awesome, I loved leaving his body in portal. Flip the switch then go back to his body and be were he needed to go.

The gravity flipping was very cool, and very dissorienting. Even Bon thought it's great, she's very interested in the game. I can't wait to play around with these different features and abilities.
Human Head has done amazing work with the D3 engine, it is very impressive.

And, PREY is now the second FPS I've seen were the player throws up! (First one being Condemned)

EDIT: Just watched the video again, okay for the fifth time. And I was watching as he was following himself through the portals (brilliant... I'll end up killing myself so many times) and I noticed the gun. The yellow one, it drips.
From the side of the gun... it may not be much actualy, but it's just cool looking. Just some yellow goey nasty stuff dripping from your gun. It would be cool if it left e small little yellow trail everywhere you went.

I'm evisioning many things to do with portals for some reason. Damien, imagine making the Docks from FEAR, only making a portal in the back of the truck that leads somewhere else? What if I made a trailer park where each of the trailers opened up to different worlds?

Wait wait wait.....imagine a Planescape Torment level? They have portals in the towns, it would be kickass!

Hoo hoo, that is a very cool video indeed!

Of course, I did notice the oddity that happened during that part where Tommy was seeing himself in the portal - that is, how the portal could not see through itself, instead displaying black. Bah, that is minor anyway! I am very excited for this game!

EDIT: Also:

I think the reasoning behind this is the same reason that mirrors in most games only allow a maximum of 2-3 passes, the risk of seing through infinite portals at once or more could cause a "hall of mirrors" effect of drawing infinite amount of geometry at once, and thats not possible and would probably kill your computer.

Instead this is a very good optimization.

Atleast in Max-FX engine which is "portal" based if i've understood correctly, the tutorials allways recommended to place the geometry dividing portals in such a manner that you can never view through a portal behind a portal at once since the engine allways renders the Room geometry of the rooms connected to the room you are in. If you could see into a room it would render the geometry and objects inside the room either way, so being able to see through a portal through a portal would render both those rooms at full detail PLUS the room geometry of rooms connected to the room you are in at that time. Not very optimized. Thats why you could close these portals in Max-FX dynamically with scripts, say a door is blocking a doorway and there's a portal in that doorway dividing the geometry, if you'd look at that door it would render the geometry inside that room even if you couldn't see inside it cause of the door, thats why you could script it like, if the door is closed then the portal is closed and anything behing it wont be rendered, ( it would make the portal appear as black), then if you opended the door it would open that portal and render the stuff inside that room.

Another thing that you had to remember when making maps is to try avoiding making two portals leading to the same room visible at once, since it would cause the contents of the room being rendered twice.

Now i know that these portals in max payne and Prey are hugely different in the way they work, meaning you couldn't create prey like portals in max payne, i still believe that the reason not being able to see through a portal behind a portal is purely for the sake of optimization and avoiding huge slowdowns, and very smart desicion.

Oh, cmon. That isn't really rocket science.
The possibility of an infinite rendering loop is really is one of the more obvious things to come across when having to deal with implementing such a system or mirrors in general.
Having said that, the video was really really cool. Seems like this could be another memorable game.

Well, he is right though. It is an optimization feature. Of course, they could theoretically set a limit of through how many portals you can see. But that is not really that important IMO.

That said, I didn't even notice the black part.

I did notice a glitch when walking back to the front of the portal in the room where you had to slide the portal. (a very cool feature by the way. )

Exactly. And I do think this point is absolutely clear and obvious to everybody, and thus far from being as complicated to understand as rocket-science. To me Jokke_r's post just looked a bit too over the top for something as simple as that, but nevermind about it.

What's between the red "circle" is a part of the same room the player is, whereas what's outside the circle but inside the portal limits is what we see from the other room.

Funny, I haven't seen it the 3 first times I watch the video.

Anyway, really great stuff as always !
