Update to Official DNF FAQ?
I remember on the planetduke.com news blog back in March or April, that they said they would be making a major revision to the Official DNF FAQ. Well here we are in Late Sept. and the thing hasn't been updated since 01/08/2005. A lot of the info in the FAQ is out of date and George has confirmed a lot of things about DNF since Jan 2005. I guess the dude Abe Rahey runs the thing, so maybe I should ask him. But I know all the DNF diehards post here, so I figured I'd bring up this topic.....

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
It will be getting updated. I know there was a complete rewrite in progress, but as for when I'm not sure, it's not my department

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
I've been thinking about making the DNF FAQ into a Wiki on the 3DR site that folks can edit - nothing goes public w/o approval, though.
But it should allow for more timely updating with new info. If anyone is interested in participating in my "beta" of this idea, let me know via PM, please.

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
A wiki would be great (I would participate) but I forsee a lot of immature pricks vandalizing it with "DNF is never coming out LOL" type of posts.

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
Wow, a controlled wiki sounds great. I've been looking up stuff in Wikipedia on a daily bases for years now; and a DNF-wiki could beat out a FAQ any day

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
Good idea Joe, maybe include some forme of user control, where only a selected group of people can edit it, those who have proven to be able to behave on the forums or something, saves time and removes the "prick" chance.
I wouldn't mind helping out with it though, but most people would get there info sooner then me (due to the fact that I live in europe and 3DR is in the U.S. ) |

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
Anyone can edit it but only a select group can approve those edits.
Not too sure if Joe has changed his mind on who can approve but before it was only going to be some 3DR employees. |

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
Sounds like an interesting idea Joe. Nice to hear that you are letting followers of 3DR to participate in sharing up to date info about the game. Hopefully it will work, and people will see what is in and where development for the game may be heading.

It's a really good idea, and I want to help, but as my english isn't that good, I'll stay with moral support.
But if there's need of a good english to spanish translation for something, let me know. |

still not a good idea, forum users that don't work at 3DR don't know everything for sure. hmm, maybe we can submit "DNF is going to have battlelords and devastators" and see if they approve it or not just kidding |

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
That was indeed the idea, but then they might get a lot of "prick' entries like:
When is it done? DNF will never be finished? ... Well, you can fill in the rest. that's why I made this suggestion, to prevent things like this as much as possible. |

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
I like the idea, because alot of us know enough to where we can contribute, which frees up alot of time on the part of 3D Realms, so they don't have to spend some nth amount of hours sifting through what is allowable to put up and then post it themselves. All they have to do is sift through entries with filters and then content filters (then George's shit filter) to post some bit of information.
As long as the contributors take it seriously and don't get asshats posting crap like, "It'll never get done." or, "@#(%&#(@ &*SDKLHJ#@" (which translates to a I'm an immature dweeb just wasting everybodies time by submitting stuff that even the enquirer wouldn't buy), or the infamous, "This is my opinion on this, or I believe" (While opinions are plenty, facts are what is counting here. If the submitions are any like I have theorized above, I feel sorry that Joe and the others have to waste their time sifting through it. Because if this thing does go, someone, somewhere is going to get cute and try to do push crap through a submition. Then they'll find out they're really ugly when they look in the mirror and be shamed to join the sideshow attraction, which I heard is pretty booked solid as it is. I'd love to see this, it'd be a good way to alleviate alot of the problems of recurring threads or the same question on a different day and thread. The info would be localized, it isn't strewn into multiple threads and due largely in part of community cooperation, maintained frequently. this situation is win/win as long as it is treated like a serious project, much like you'd get on the job. It's communal collaboration and help, it's a thankless job but you feel good afterwards. ...Which reminds me, give aid donate need materials to places of authority towards hurricane relief if you haven't.

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
Because it's being approved by 3DR do we still need to post quotes supporting what we say?

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
I wouldn't think so, unless they need it for proof matter. I mean this should be built on facts, not something that is piled with the submitter's beliefs or opinions on the thing. Then it gets political and flame wars ensue when someone offers an opinion that doesn't sit well with others.

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
No, but often our conclusions are interpretations of what George is saying. I mean for example George said that:
"You can't really tone down the shadows. they are all dictated by distance from a light, etc, so it's all "real". So you really just take what you get. I expect that people complaining about stencil shadows being hard lines, and dark, will like people complaining that characters are pixellated when you walk up to them in Doom. It's simply the way it is with technology, right now." This almost confirms stencil shadows, but it's never explicitly stated that DNF is using them. And there other pieces of evidence to be brought in, for example the level designer job notice that lists experience with the Doom 3 engine as being important. Again George states that maps now only take "a few minutes (4-5?)" to process/compile, which indicates that much of the static precomputed lighting is gone, but this is never explicitly stated.

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
most likely that wouldn't be approved because that's trying to draw inferences and unless it is something they'd want to persue and allow to be posted, they would. Up to the discretion of 3D Realms.

ah, that's why FireFly is very enthusiastic, as quote-man he won't need to find quotes anymore

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
Firefly, I think that you can reasonably infer stencil shadows, since George mentions them. I also think that should be the standard you should be able to "reasonably infer" the information.
But I do thing that we for the sake of information should always provide quotes supporting what we say, thats how the current FAQ is done and it is sanctioned by 3D Realms. |

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
Maybe we can allready create a list here (or in a seperate thread) so that we have a head start, it's less work to work to one huge list then through several small lists or even single items?
Just an idea. |

Re: Update to Official DNF FAQ?
So.....Has there been any progress made on this project or what? Abe Rahey over at planetduke.com made post about a week ago saying "(DNF FAQ) has a complete revision in the works." In the works for the last 9 months? I guess planetduke.com must be following 3DR's popluar "WID" mantra for a freckin FAQ???.....Geez....Will someone please get on the ball!!
