3D Realms - You will be missed

I'm not really a forum person, but I do read these forums quite often and until the latest announcment of the closing of 3dR and the lawsuit, I probably would'nt have bothered posting.

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I can still recall the very day that I was introduced to Duke3d. It was like an eye opener. I had never been more hooked right from the start on any other game. The game's design and graphics just blew me away.

I have probably logged more hours between the n64 and pc Duke3d than any other game. I can seriously credit it for excelling my interest into game development. I remember making levels with the build editor back in high school and day dreaming how great it would be working with 3dRealms. There were many restless nights making levels just for my friends to play.

Even if this does mean the end of days of the Duke franchise, I for one am thankful to have had the opportunity to play Duke 3d. I am in 3d Realms debt for this masterpiece and wish them the best through this lawsuit. To most people it may just be a game but to me it was more. Countless memories with friends and the curiosity to find out how it was all done.

Regardless if DNF is released or not, I think we can all agree that 3dRealms have given us more great memories than we could have hoped for. I only wish I was there for the rise and fall as a fellow employee. It sure would've been a ride.

Hello Mr. Drew...

I appreciate your post... I agree with your suggestion that many people are too focused on the negative side of their own wants (e.g. DNF) and forget the good. Just the use of this system I appreciate and enjoy... it is all a gift, some users are too shallow to see things that way of course.

Tualmasok: I guess you are suggesting that Mr. Drew is Brown-Nosing or kissing ass in some way is pretty dumb really. What good would it do him to do so? Ass-kissing is generally for personal gain in case you are too immature to understand. By expressing condolences to Apogee/3D Realms I don't think he will get a copy of DNF just for being a good sport... I guess you are probably a kid (regardless of age) and have no real ties to 3D Realms, but it really doesn’t matter. Entitlement to opinions does not automatically force someone to post them.
Lucky for the rest of us, we can type our opinions too... just like you.

I think the same about Duke Nukem 3d man and I used to think the same about 3drealms also, but after such an epic fail for 12 years, I am beginning to believe that dn3d was all luck and momentum. Either that or a secret organization produced it and paid them to release it under the 3drealms name...
People that produced such great games in the past, not being able to build a sequel to any of them for over 12 years means they are unable to do that anymore! They are incapable of making something good after 10 years have passed!

3D realms is a good game company, they are not exactly dead yet so I will not speak to them in past tense. They are just in financial trouble.

I agree... they have failed. You ever failed at anything? Miserably? If you have not, then you aren't doing anything. I miserably failed my first MCSE testing... I thought I knew everything... but that too was miss-management of my ego maybe.

Mr. Drew expressed that he had a simple dream/thoughts of working for the company that created one of the most awesome games in DOS 3D Gaming history... there is nothing brown-nosing or negative about that. That has nothing to do with Apogee/3D Realms “epic fail”. This “failure” doesn’t necessarily say anything about the employees of 3D Realms. They could be some of the best, but without good management it doesn’t matter.
John Romero said something along the lines that he was a great developer, but a poor company manager after the Ion Storm “epic fail”. They BARELY got their game out the door and that was only after their publisher more than doubled the money input to get John Romero/Ion Storm to finish the game... I can’t remember the numbers, but I think it eventually exceeded 30 million.

My point is this... unless you have never had an epic fail... cut Apogee/3D Realms some slack. The bad part is that we still don’t know, and might never know, what happened exactly.

I will close with this... Apogee/3D Realms owes you NOTHING. Hopes are a choice. They don’t have your money and your time was optional.

All I will say is, the biggest insult to an artist is when no one has a chance to admire your work.

I think the biggest insult to the developers is not having this game published.

I know it seems like a long shot, but even a little bit of hope is better than no hope at all.

I hope they can find some way to get this game out.

You want to see something scary? If you have it available, get out your PC Duke 3D booklet and look at the developer group photo and look how many faces are in the picture on the front page of this site today...

That is so freakin sad to me.

Look, I posted this just to pay tribute to these guys for giving me something in my life that I admire and enjoy. That is as simple as it is. I never expected that everyone shared my same passion for this company and game. Hell, the idols in my life are not football players or billionaire philanthropists, they are game developers. Guys like William Hurt and John Carmack. This is possibly why I have a stronger connection with all of this. I guess as with most online forums you have to deal with the occasional flamer/instigators. That's the way of the net I suppose. But really, if you don't agree, that is fine. Feel free to post a response but do it in a respectful manner and have some content. Calling someone a brown-noser and then scurrying off isn't exactly taking the higher road.

Actually, David Drew, it was quite a nice post. I remember playing DN3D the first time and being absolutely awed. I would surely have enjoyed playing DNF, and still would if something actually materialised.

Sadly, though, posting anything for/against 3DR at the moment will bring the ire of both parties, those who are still hoping against hope that DNF will live on, and those who have resigned to the fact that DNF is most likely dead.

Still, it gets a bit grating when every conversation devolves into calling each other 3DR fanbois or trolls. It is a little depressing to see the community splinter so very badly and so very quickly. Seems to be the fate of most communities under these circumstances, though.

It is indeed very sad. Such fine talent and such a great thing becomes nothing. Hard work and determination even when so many laughed at them for it.

The developers, as small as they are, did some awesome things. Things that looks so fantastic and I give my hats off to them.

What so many people just don't get is that this was not just making a game that looked good or played good. It was about making an Epic game that goes down in history.

Would it be the best game ever? No, because that is impossible, but it would be a huge game. Probably one of the biggest we would ever see.

To some, it's not about making money or being famous, it is about creating something to leave behind. This game is what they had a lot of passion in. They wanted to do it right even if it took them 100 years to make this game. If they cared only about money, they would have released this game long long ago with sub-par graphics and barely any plot and people would eat it up because of "Duke Nukem" in the title. I have seen it happen to some companies. They didn't want that.

They wanted to make a great game which I believe they did even though we never got to play it.

Sure they were 12 years behind schedule, but you have admire their determinaton for their creative passion for it. While I understand things from a business point of view and everything, I just admire 3D realms heart and courage to at least try.

In essence, I don't blame anyone from 3D realms downfall or Take two and such...somethings just happen and we have to accept that and not point the blame at anyone for this.

I admire the workers of 3D realms and any game developer who puts passion into their work, because those are the true heroes of our days.

So to the boys and girls of 3D realms, I salute you all.

Can I get a "hell yeah?"

I understand that 12 years of development was way too long, but FFS, it was their game and not yours. You didn't fund it, you didn't develop it, so you lost nothing (time spent on forums doesn't count). If anyone has a right to complain it's the employees who spent the last 12 years of their life working on something that probably won't see the light of day.

Frankly, everyone needs to STFU, and move on. Nothing else we can say will change the fact that DNF won't be finished. I'm sorry you won't get your precious DNF game, but it's something you'll have to live with.

It's sad that 3DR staff was let go, but from what I read, 3DRealms isn't closing down. They're a lot smaller and there still seems to be some hope that things will work out. Time will tell, but officially, 3DRealms isn't closed down. At least not from what I read in the statement released by 3DRealms.

I remember when Duke Nukem 3D first came out. I didn't get to the games before that because I was too young, but I did play DN3D.

I thought it was one of the best games I ever played.

I am still going to hold onto my hope that DNF will be released. I don't worship the game like many think one does, but I still hope the games comes out. I can wait a lifetime for this game an until this game is permanently canceled, I will still wait.

i miss the old times which great games where you could see how much love they put in and that there were not just a handful of studios but also studios which tried always to do a different style, graphics etc. now you mostly have the same shit copied over and over again.

If games like wolfenstein/doom/duke nukem never existed i probley wouldnt play any games these days.

You know the industry is going to shit when unreal tournament 3 and crysis warhead only games i bought in last 2 years just nothing i want anymore nothing really appeals to me duke was one of the last cool games to look forward to, that would be the shit if we ever see this game though.

i rarely do play video games anymore just arent as fun to me as they used to be.

level design honestly i think went to trash in the new fps games.

i mean i grew up playing mario and double dragon/sonic also, but doom is really what got me big into really only type of games i like now.

Like he said, 12 years of development is and was unnecessary. If the game was released in a timely fashion, 3D Realms would still be operating at full capacity. You just flamed a guy for stating something true and obvious. Well done.

I understand that 12 years of development was way too long, but FFS, it was their game and not yours. You didn't fund it, you didn't develop it, so you lost nothing (time spent on forums doesn't count). If anyone has a right to complain it's the employees who spent the last 12 years of their life working on something that probably won't see the light of day. Frankly, everyone needs to STFU, and move on. Nothing else we can say will change the fact that DNF won't be finished. I'm sorry you won't get your precious DNF game, but it's something you'll have to live with.

They're a lot smaller and there still seems to be some hope that things will work out. Time will tell, but officially, 3DRealms isn't closed down. At least not from what I read in the statement released by 3DRealms.

JamesCassidy	Re: 3D Realms - You will be missed I remember when Duke Nukem 3D first came out. I didn't get to the games before that because I was too young, but I did play DN3D. I thought it was one of the best games I ever played. I am still going to hold onto my hope that DNF will be released. I don't worship the game like many think one does, but I still hope the games comes out. I can wait a lifetime for this game an until this game is permanently canceled, I will still wait.

Caine	Re: 3D Realms - You will be missed i miss the old times which great games where you could see how much love they put in and that there were not just a handful of studios but also studios which tried always to do a different style, graphics etc. now you mostly have the same shit copied over and over again. miss 3drealms? man where do you come from? we didnt get 12 years anything from them. so i dont miss them these time, just the old times.......

The employees of 3DR were **** over by the management of 3DR, you can't expect anyone to throw money at a game thats been in development for 12 years.
