Strange issues with on disk cache
I've had this issue for a while, but only now have I decided to post about it. When I activate the on disk cache, it slows it down ever so slightly the first time I run each level as it writes the files, as I would expect. When I run the game later, everything loads and runs much quicker. However, this doesn't last, and for some reason EDuke32 before long stops reading from the cached files, instead recaching them, which should only happen once. Is this known or is it just my PC?

Re: Strange issues with on disk cache
Hmm, this isn't any sort of a known issue. The only way I know of for this to happen is if something happened to the texcache dir which resides under your EDuke32 directory, or if you ran the game using the same texcache dir on different machines.

If you ever run the game off of, for example, a network share, I'd recommend creating a blank file called user_profiles_enabled in the same directory as your eduke32.exe. This will cause the game to store its cfg files, savegames, texcache directory, et cetera in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\EDuke32, which will typically be something like C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\EDuke32.

Re: Strange issues with on disk cache
I use no network of any kind, and I checked the texcache folder every time this has happened. The texcache folder has no visible changes to it when it happens, and it even still has 'last modified' at the time it was originally cached.

Very strange. How often does this happen?

Usually on the same day it first caches the textures.

Should 'Compress Disk Cache' be on or off?

I leave all of the options on, personally.
