First you need to extract the map from the GRP file. kextract duke3d.grp *.map. This will extract all the Duke map, they look like this [B]E1L1, E1L2, etch. If you want to extract just 1 map [b]kextract duke3d.grp E1L1.map. That will extract Holllywood Holocaust.

Then. make sure the map(s) are in the Duke folder, load build, when build is loaded, hit ESC, L then you will be presented with selection of maps.

You can find all this information in the FAQ that come on the CD or the many other FAQ'S on Dukeworld.com.

You don't have to extract them first. Just type "Build E1L3" or whichever map you're interested in.
(Make sure Build is in the same directory as the game, not in a sub-directory)

Re: 3DR build maps
If you accidentally mess up one of the original maps while pulling it apart to see how they did stuff in there, don't worry about it. The original is still in the duke3d.grp file, intact (unless you used kgroup.exe to rebuild the .grp file with the new .map). However, to play the unchanged version, you will need to delete the map from your DUKE3D directory.

For instance, if you were looking at E1L1 (Hollywood Holocaust) and have the file in your directory (E1L1.MAP) and it has been changed, the game will look there first before going to the .grp file to get the map. Only if the map isn't in the directory will the game go to the DUKE3D.GRP file to get it. The same goes for all the other files contained in the .grp file: .con files, .art files, et cetera.

Your best bet (if you have the room on your HD) is to simply use KEXTRACT. Type KEXTRACT DUKE3D.GRP *.MAP to get all of the maps out of the .grp file. Then you can just use the ESC, L commands from within BUILD to load each map, without having to exit BUILD and then use the command line to load each map directly from the .grp file (BUILD E1L1 for instance).

When a map will be extracted, tune it to the max! Place there as many aliens as possible and experience the new quality
