Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
I have just purchased the 1.4g through your online store (and Wacky Wheels / Rise of the Triad in the past week) to support you guys, it's also my way of thanking you for the awesome freeware releases you have been putting out. You're kickass, people!

Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
You guys realize that there never was a Version 1.1 Shareware that didn't have a working secret elevator, right? Every shareware version had a working secret elevator. The Wolf3d v1.1 shareware EXE used a different technique for bringing you to the secret elevator: you had to be standing on the x-axis of 10. So, in v1.1 shareware (6/01/1992), the secret elevator would bring you to level 10 even if there was no secret floorcode under the player.
The problem was when ID Software made Version 1.1 Full/Registered, they changed that code to "you have to be standing on a secret floorcode", yet they forget to change the map files to match. That's where the problem was, so they released a patch for v1.2 full/registered. V1.1 Full/Registered (6/10/1992) is the only version that doesn't bring you to level 10. They released version 1.2 shareware for entirely different reasons, which seems to be mostly so it would be compatible and up-to-date with the latest source code changes in v1.2 Full/Registered. There are still some other ways you can find out if you have v1.1 or v1.2 shareware though: - The dates are (6/01/1992) for v1.1 and (6/22/1992) for v1.2 - The red Apogee sign in the VSWAP says "SNAPPITY" only in Version 1.1 Shareware - The floorcode under the secret elevator in the GAMEMAPS file has been changed to a secret floorcode in v1.2 (to match with it's exe) - The machine gun shows you with bear hands in v1.1 - The VSWAP has two extra blank spaces before BJ's jumping frame (which you can't see), which makes the alignment swappable with all the newer full version VSWAPS So, you won't find out if you have v1.1 or v1.2 shareware by testing to see if the secret elevator works, but you can find out which one it is by taking out the secret floorcode and seeing if the elevator still brings you to level 10. Here's a list of the stuff I could find so far: Cheat codes don't work ----------------------- Apogee v1.4 (exe dated - Jan. 1/93) Cheat codes work ------------------ Apogee v1.1 (exe dated - Jun. 10/92) Apogee v1.2 (exe dated - Jun. 22/92) Apogee v1.4g (exe dated - Oct. 1/94) GT Interactive (exe dated - Sept. 2/93) GT Interactive (exe dated - Apr. 13/94) ID Software (exe dated - Sept. 3/93) Imagineer (exe dated - Mar. 4/93) Activision (exe dated - Jan. 27/98) I think there's atleast two more Apogee versions out there without cheats. Anyone know? |

Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
Quite an informative post, Chris. What's the thing about the so-called bear hands, exactly?

Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
Chokster37, you are officially a hero of the realm at Classic DOS Games. With that information, I was able to verify that all of the files claiming to be v1.1 really were v1.1. I checked exe dates and tested for bear hands, and have finally been able to list v1.1 and v1.2 on my site. My copy of v1.1 comes with an official-looking Apogee self-extracter, which most other archives of v1.1 seem to lack.

The 1.4 distributed by Apogee doesn't seem to work with any of the Wolf3D source ports (NewWolf, WinWolf3D, Wolf3DRedux) that I tried, but the 1.4 distributed by Activision does. The Activision version of v1.4 is on the February 2002 PC Gamer CD. NewWolf does work with Apogee v1.2, though. Something funny about Activision v1.4 is that although Activision took out the "Read This!" link from the main menu (which had all the Apogee ordering information in it), typing "Help" in the NewWolf console brings up those pages, but a lot of the graphics are broken, as Activision deleted all the Apogee-related graphics. Another difference I noticed between Apogee v1.2 and v1.4 is that the exit screens are different: The v1.2 exit screen joked about your hard drive being erased if you were unregistered, while the v1.4 exit screen just said your mom would be disappointed. Activision v1.4 nuked that screen entirely. |

The 1.4 that Activision distributes is likely a newer build to change the exit screens and all. But cannot fathom why they'd change anything like game code. It's probably just text and menu changes.

Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
All of this stuff is part of the reason why a patch for old Wolfenstein versions was ever created. Too many variables floating around out there.

Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
I think this method of supplying spaces in parameters was only introduced with long filenames in Win95. Although I've never tested it, I don't think it will work in pure DOS (6.22 and older.)

I haven't tested it in actual DOS yet, but it works in DOSBox.

Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
I was under the impression that the wolf 1.2 update of the shareware version was to stop the "wolf porn" of that era basically people having the walls and uploading versions of the shareware that were full of low res porn

Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
^ There was an unofficial version 1.3 floating around, which is why id skipped that version number and made the jump from 1.2 to 1.4. I believe it is mentioned in Masters of Doom (a good read, recommended if you haven't checked it out).

Re: Wolfenstein 1.4g?
I just re-read this whole thread... interesting bunch of trivia.
I have a good bit of old shareware still around that was from Software Creations. When Software Creations closed (about 96?) I bought their BackUp tapes... yep, the whole system. The tapes eventually failed and due to HDD space over the years, I don't have everything anymore, but I have a lot of it. I do have version 1.1 shareware of Wolfenstein with exe date of 6-1-1992 which is currently expanded in my games directory. This means there is a high chance I have the original file unexpanded, but it will contain the Software Creations plug file. I am not really into all the different versions, but I know the files I have from those tapes has helped a lot of people find obscure versions. <sigh> if I had only gotten everything archived from those tapes... so much is lost. I was young and needed the hard disk space for some awesome game I am sure. And yes, Masters of DooM is an great book in my opinion. MrBlackCat
