can't change resolution with 3870 X2

Has anyone else had a problem of not being able to change the resolution from 800x600 when using an ati 3870 X2 video card? When I had the 8800 video card I could get it to work in any of the resolutions on any of the aspect ratios. With this card it will not get out of the 800x600 mode. I have even tried these commands:
r_customHeight "1050"
r_customWidth "1680"
r_mode "-1"
r_aspectRatio "2"

and then using vid_restart. It didn't work so I created and autexec.cfg and put the settings in there and still the same thing. I installed the newest catalyst drivers but I have the same issue. Any ideas how to fix this?

According to this thread it's a Catalyst 8.3 issue. Going back to 8.2 should fix it.
