Shadow Warrior Kanji Translations
If anybody is interested I've managed to translate some of the Kanji (Japanese characters) in the Shadow Warrior game. Basicly I used to Character Map to find the characters and then entered them into Babelfish for the translation. Some of the characters were to small to make out clearly. Some of the kanji also appeared to be in a language other than Japanese, (possibly Korean?) Attached is a list of the tiles containing Kanji and the litteral translations. To properly view the other characters you will need Aisan fonts on your computer.

Re: Shadow Warrior Kanji Translations
If anybody out there can read Kanji fluently or even recognizes some of the characters in the game and can fill in any of the missing portions thier help would be greatly apreciated.

Re: Shadow Warrior Kanji Translations
Kanji are just Chinese Hanzi, though the meanings differ slightly. I'll see what I can do.

Re: Shadow Warrior Kanji Translations
I started doing this exact same thing recently but gave up rather quickly once I realized that most of the signs were just straight translations of the English text in the same texture. But because you asked and since I noticed a few errors I decided to mark-up your tranlations: http://members.cox.net/megadeus/kanji.htm.
I'm impressed you had the patients to sort through all 2000-or-so kanji in Character Map to find each one. I would have gone mad after the third or fourth one using that method. I'm also surprised at how good a result you got using Babelfish for the translation. Because, uh...Babelfish is to translating, as MSPaint is to photo editing. There are much better machine translators out there than Babelfish. For Japanese I prefer @nifty's. I'll see what I can do about the non-Japanese text. Korean and Japanese are both borrowed from Chinese so perhaps there is enough similarity between them for me to figure it out. From the looks of it 3D Realms just picked up a couple cheap _____ / English dictionaries and did simple word-for-word translations so it shouldn't be too hard. |

Re: Shadow Warrior Kanji Translations
Here is an updated list of the Kanji with some additional traslations, My thanks to WarHammer. This version includes Kanji that appeared on pickup items. Not all of the Kanji were available on my computer, to view Ideographic Extensions B the Sursong truetype font is required, In those cases I wrote down the coresponding unicode values. Using the webpage at:
http://www.unicode.org/charts/unihanrsindex.html I was able to decipher some more of the chracters but there are still some that I could not make out or even find In the Unicode tables. Some sort of hand writing recognition/translation/stylus program may work for looking them up, But I don't know of any. The characters do not sem to be Korean as I have previously thought. |

Re: Shadow Warrior Kanji Translations
The Windows IME Pad has hand writing recognition (accessed via the language toolbar):
Those mystery characters do sort-of look like Korean but I wasn't able to find any matches either. They may be rotated or flipped, some other East-Asian script, or just entirely made up pseudo-Asian. I haven't had any luck so far but you could try looking around on Omniglot, which has information on just about every language known to man, including fictional ones. Here is a link to their master language index: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/index.htm. I have also updated my version of the list. I have double-checked everything, made some new additions, and reorganized things a little. The new version is located at www.members.cox.net/nyao/kanji. It would be nice if we could identify the missing characters, it makes a nice resource for making high-res texture replacements. |

Tile 0201's words is the same as tile 0147's , "shadow warrior" But 0201's words is a little hardly to read. Even though it still readable for me. Tile 2704 is "都をどり"(みやこをどり;Miyako-Odori) Its mean "Cherry Blossom Dance" http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%83%...81%A9%E3%82%8A (Wikipedia doesn't English version of this. Only Japenese and Deutsch version) You can used Google to search more. Tile 5017 should "白菜" (ハクサイhaku-sai. It's mean "Chinese cabbage" / "bok choy") http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%...82%B5%E3%82%A4 The first word should "白" (It mean "white") There're not something called "日菜" in Chinese/Japenese. Tile 5068 should "旅行"(りょこう;Ryo-kou; it's mean "travel"). http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%97%85%E8%A1%8C The first word is "旅"(たび;ta-bi) Tile 5069... the second Kanji should "士"(ji) not "土"(to). In tile 5069 , the mountain near the cable car is looks like "Mt. Fuji". So I think that words should "富士(fu-ji)" not "富土"(fu-to). I'm not Japenese, but I can read some japenese words. I may not correct because of SW messed Chinese, Japenese and other languages up and mis-using on it... (I don't sure IF you can see the Chinese/Japenese words on my post because of I can't sure it is or not display correctly...>_<)

Re: Shadow Warrior Kanji Translations
Can anyone make out the Kanji on the menu in tile 5052? It's very small but some of the characters look like:
ス き リ |

さめ = サメ = 鮫 ; sa-me : shark (I think "さめ" = "サメ" bacause both are the same Kana(sa-me).) "ス" may mean "soup" in that tile, but in Japanese, it should "スープ(sūpu)"
