Dark Ages?
Hi,

Has there been any talk of releasing dark ages as freeware/open source?

It'll eventually happen probably. We don't have a set timetable for releasing things. Plus there's also legal issues to cover. Todd owns the rights to that, and we have no way of getting hold of him. That presents a problem.

But you did get hold of him when you released the Thor Trilogy as freeware?

Scott Miller gave me permission on that one, Thor I think had a different set of legalities if I remember right.

Joe has proven on a number of occasions that he intends to let Apogee fans play the games that 3DR no longer sells. The limiting factor here seems to be the permission of Todd Replogle. I'm sure Joe will release it, or announce his ability to release it, as soon as he has permission.

Finding Todd Replogle is the bigger issue. Nobody here knows where he is. We tried contacting him when we did the Legacy Interview series, but nobody has any clue how to find him anymore. Disappeared off the face of the Earth, apparently.

Retrojeff, please stop bumping the thread. That won't change anything.

If he's still in the us, you could eventually find him by highering a PI. The PI could find the right legal documents about things he owns and where he probably lives.

That was some very interesting spelling. The idea to spend a bunch of money to release a free product is also interesting. I haven't done a cost-benefit analysis, but I know that the benefit is $0, so they're probably going to take a loss on this one.

"Todd Replogle currently lives in his home town of Santa Cruz California." according to Wikipedia. It's on the Internet so it must be true .

So we can release Dark Ages as freeware. Yeah, that's a good use of money.

I've given up editing Wikipedia on stuff about us. You'd think they'd trust someone who actually works here, as opposed to a 13 year old punk in a town nobody's ever heard of as a source of info, but noooo.......

He'll turn up someday I'm sure. We can all rail on him then.

Your older games still sell pretty good. I'd think you'd be flattered to spend a few dollars for fans of an old game that's been discontinued. But then again, I bought Dark Ages before that and the sentiment of spending extra money on a classic was not a bad idea, just a pore one.

People who want to pick on my spelling can shove it -- I'm not your pet.

Re: Dark Ages?
personally, I'd be happy to pay $5-10 for any of the classic titles should they include the source code under a free software license

Look at Todd Replogle's Wikipedia page and look at the name of the person who added the information.

I had not seen that before. That's definitely Todd alright.

Looks like it's him uploading it, but one can never totally be sure, if you know what I mean.

Joe, the fact is that any "13 year old punk in a town nobody's ever heard of" could try to pass as Joe Siegler on Wikipedia. So, if you need to correct some articles about 3DRealms on Wikipedia, the best thing to do would be posting the info here, then have someone else edit Wikipedia and use your post as a citation.

I don't think a forum post would survive as an acceptable source. If it was on the website it would stand a better chance, but then it would be considered a primary source, which is also frowned upon. The best thing would be for someone else to post the information on their website and use that as a non-primary source. Some of the interviews that I've done for my site have been used as sources on Wikipedia, whereas, ironically, what they told me might not have been an acceptable source if they had written it on their own website!

It does - they've let stand the page on Manhattan project where I reference myself on these forums. Although I suppose if someone pointed that out they might have an issue.
