1988? That's impossible, the real news about the DNF project didn't come about 10 years after that! How did you reserve your copy when they didn't even unleash the fact that 3DR was doing this? They didn't even start until shortly after D3D or SW were released!

I remember when I first saw companies taking preorders in PCGamer. I almost preordered through Electronics Boutique. Glad I didn't, not because I don't want the game... just because my order would have probably magically dissappeared and I would have had to pay the $50 dollars all over again.

I never preorder, mostly because it will be in the store anyway, secondly, because I am on good terms with our local store, I can allways ask to keep a copy for me.

Bang, you're dead.

Pre-ordering here is kind of moot, you'll find a copy anyway.

Typo. January 1998.

I was playing Duke heavy at Kali and the Zone and was on both ladders at Cases. I'm pretty sure it was Cases that started a "Store" and was offering a reserved copy of DNF. I ordered one and paid $40. It was about a year and a half later (I had given up ever getting the game or my money) when I got a e-mail notifying me they had canceled my order and refunded my money.

I check in here once a year or so just to see what's the latest news on the vapor ware product.

So it was almost 8 years ago I ordered.

You know when I really think about it, the longer DNF takes the better looking it will be. I don’t know about you guys but I’m waiting for DNF VR!

HELLOO!! FPS’s are virtual worlds AKA Virtual Reality. The only thing missing is the head set.

I disagree

to wiki define FPS: A first-person shooter ... a computer or video game where the player's on-screen view of the game world simulates that of the character

Virtual Reality is not quite like that, VR immerses you into the game, in it you are not controlling a character in the game like a FPS because you are the main character in VR, the controls are your own movements such as your own hand movements, head turn, body rotation, etc. VR is suppose to provide you a 360 degree field of view of a game or simulation.

Combining a head set (HMD) with a FPS game, might give you that nostalgia of VR, but all it is, is just small LCDs made so only your eyes can see. You're better off just putting your eyes up close to your monitor for that affect.

Are you not controlling your 3D avatar in VR?

You have a point there but I think your nit picking just a little bit. I am sure some time in the future most people will say that true VR uses a direct connection to the brain. If you were to show tech heads DooM 3 in 1984 and attach a head set with motion sensor gloves they sure as shit would call it VR then promptly die of a heart attack.

I don't think I'll pre-order. If 3DR sells the game through their store or takes pre-orders then I'll buy it through them. I refuse to support the practice of companies like EB (who I work for by the way) making up release dates and then acting like it's the developers' fault that your 1999 preorder of DNF hasn't arrived yet.

Plus, I'm sure that there will be enough copies to go around.

Through all of my preorder experiences I have learned that preording isn't worth the time it takes to preorder it. all of my preorders arrived like 2-5 days after it hit store shelves. So it's just easier to order it the day it's released. Same result.

Next to them I have an index card that says "8 years - Still Waiting." You'd be surprised how many people comment on my decoration

I haven't pre-ordered, but I won the caption compo twice, and intend to put both $35 vouchers toward whatever special collectors edition of the game comes out.

I'm hoping to win a third so I can get the ultra limited edition complete with mouldy pizza and george's nose hair clippings.

You know, I still have a 'Duke Nukem Forever' DVD 3DRealms distributed back in E3 2000 (or was it 99?) It's better than a preorder 'cause you can, at least, lay your hands on it and play the in-game movies on the TV.

Some times, a non-informed being, while browsing my games collections, finds it and screams "What the heck?!? You got DNF?!? It exists!?!"

Of course, I play along with it for 5 minutes before telling the truth about the game box and its contents...

As I said, better than a preorder in some practical sense...

You're probably referring to the DVD that was handed out at E3 2001. All that was on it was the DNF E3 2001 trailer, and the Max Payne E3 2001 trailer. That's it.

I've seen it crop up on ebay and on sites for people making up stories like they have some pre-release DNF copy.

It's somewhat rare, but not THAT rare. There were thousands printed. I doubt you'd get rich off of it.
