Re: What do you think of Rott?
What do I think about ROTT? I think it gave me motion sickness. I also think I miss it... it's one of the games I either gave away before I moved back to Texarkana, or simply lost while making the move.

Off-topic: Lots of FPS games (like ROTT and Doom... and yes, Duke Nukem 3D) and 3rd-person action games give me vertigo. It seems to have something with too many 90-degree angles and perfectly square or rectangular rooms, because I've noticed that games with large outdoor areas (like No One Lives Forever) or oddly-shaped rooms don't have quite as severe an effect on me. Anyone out there have any input on this?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yea that would be vertigo. Closed confined rooms can be monotonous and can make people even throw up after a while. While games like Halo, Unreal Tourney and very wide and open which allevates the feeling of claustrophobia.

What you have is VERY common, I have it too from time to time. I get headaches and I have to literally lie on a bed and relax for a bit.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I don't get headaches, but I do have to lie down to make the world stop spinning. (Stop the world! I wanna get off! )

And then when I get up I go right back to the game that caused it in the first place. OK, so maybe I'm a glutton for punishment.

I've been told that what causes it is that your eyes tell you that you're moving, but your inner ear knows that you're not. I've also heard that having 3D sound or even a surround-sound system alleviates this problem for some people (not for me, alas).

In a series of small, enclosed rooms, your eyes don't have something relatively stationary (like a horizon) to lock onto, and this may make it worse. I haven't tried scopolamine patches, which I've also been told work for some people.

What strikes me as odd, though, is that when I was younger, I used to get motion sickness when I tried to read in the car, but games had no effect on me. Now that I'm in my 30s, I don't get motion sickness in the car, but some games cause vertigo so fast that I have to quit in just 5-10 minutes!

If you get these feelings from games, it generally means you're too close to the screen.

Give your eyes something to lock onto via peripheral vision, and it generally goes away from folks we've talked to about it. No guarantee for everyone, but backing up tends to help.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I can only sit as far away as my arms can comfortably reach. To sit any further away, I'd have to get stretched on the rack until my arms were about a foot longer and sit on the edge of the bed. Not very practical (and getting my arms stretched that way would be just a bit painful...)

I recently dug up some old pascal source and recompiled 'Rand ROTT Shell'. It's basically a GUI for RandROTT.

Get it here.

Hey, when I was reading this thread I thought it was posted only a short few days ago, then I realized how old it was, lol. I thought ROTT was and still is an awesome game. I just recently reinstalled it on both of our computers to try out our new network and me and my sister blow each other to pieces (suprisingly she's actually pretty good ). There's nothing bad about it in my opinion. Yeah ofcourse its outdated, but that doesn't make the game bad in any way. Its just a great game, lol thats all I can say.

Interesting how people actually suffer against this "vertigo" as we call it. I learned something new today.

When I first played ROTT, I thought it was pretty good. The only reason why I really didn't get into it is because I was accustomed to the higher resolution graphics of Duke 3D and could barely see in the game.

"Rocky Plateau" is still one of the best FPS levels ever made. Especially when combined with Lee's genius music (Cccool in this case), it's the level I keep on playing over and over again.

And that's my 2 cents. Nothing too much.

Or, in order to raise revenue you could merely start up a porn site and watch the money roll in

My idea sounds corny, but it might actually work

Re: What do you think of Rott?
Rise of the Triad...what a great game! I still play it today (and still regret not getting the full version). I've been playing the Shareware version over and over again for years because my povo parents won't let me get the full version...and I'm not sure if you still can.

ROTT is like Commander Keen...it can never die.

Rise of the Triad needs to be started again. If not a new game, at least new levels released by Apogee. Please?

Re: What do you think of Rott?
Doubt that's gonna happen, apparently George is using the old "I dont want to" routine.

I'd be happy to make an updated, hell, even GBA version, but 3DR is picky about what happens to their IP, and we cant afford a licence even if they WOULD let us do something with it.

Ah well.

Re: What do you think of Rott?
I don't think GeorgeB is the bad guy in this case, you can't expect a company, any company, to start working on updates and new levels for a game this old.
A sequel, either in company or given to a third party is another thing, and I truly hope that one day we'll see one, but it's look like deep in the Not Gonna Happen territory.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">For the love of all that is good and holy, no. ROTT shouldn't suffer the same fate as DOOM and Wolf3d, and get a degrading "we're only in this for the money" port to the GBA.

GBA ROTT YES!
That would sell as well as "C-SPAN's Congressional Hearing Advance"

but it would get me to buy a GBA
