Lightbulb Suggestion: ESW32 program (Like EDuke32 for Shadow Warrior)
Is anybody up to writing an enhanced version of Shadow Warrior based on the Source code for EDuke32? I asked the Eduke32 team about it and they are focused on their own port so please allow them to remain so. If you are able to use their code for EDuke32 to write an ESW program then please credit the EDuke32 coders and make the source code of your program available to them so they may possibly incororate any improvements you come up with into Eduke32.

That is a HELL of a job! Not technically impossible, but a lot of work. The major stumbling block is that SW does not use CON files and everything is in C; apart from anything else, somebody would have to write CON files that replicate the hard-coded behaviours of almost everything in the game. I've no idea how 3DR's license/copyright would affect translating CONs/C code to/from another language. Also, the sprite tag system is different from DN3D so more work there, though perhaps not as much.

In short most, if not all, of the coding teams have their hands full right now as with the HRP teams too. Yeah, it'd be nice, but it ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

If you apply the GPL literally, you would only need to release those CON files as GPL.

call me Mr. Thread reviver but, you could just take JFShadowWarrior and stick a frontend on it. Then just keep fiddling with it.

The issue is really that there is no one who programs who cares enough about SW to put time into making it better as a port. When it comes to Duke 3D, there is still a thriving community of players and supporters.
It could also be commented that this thread is hidden as a sub thread to a sub thread. . .as opposed to the Duke3D stuff which stands out because Duke is 3DR's real IP.

I agree with what Mr.Fibbles says.
I probably know the Sw code better than anyone atm, and although not impossible, creating an esw could be a great challenge.
However the interest shown in Sw generally is almost zero.
What I have done with Swp thus far as mainly been for my own entertainment except maybe for the recent music parts.
Now that I have played the game again, all the maps, the addons, there is nothing left.
On the other hand, I still spend more time developing Duke3dw (JFDuke3d) as I still have 1000+ maps to play and new one's are being developed all the time.
Where needed I use eduke32 as I play at least 1 map a day and still enjoy it
Maps and Mods is what keeps a game alive, not so much its development.
Just look at how eduke32 has exploded recently and thats 75% because of the new addons and maps being developed which is a huge encouragement to the coders and graphic designers.

Yeah, the biggest problem with anyone making something like EDuke32 but for Shadow Warrior is the fact that most of the time, people don't give half a crap about SW. The fanbase is probably 1/1000th of the size of the Duke3D fanbase, if that, and nobody wants to bust their ass making something that not a whole lot of people appreciate. Everyone should just be happy JFSW and SWP are around... they're probably just about all you're going to get, unfortunately.

Hi Proasm,
Great job with the Swp port BTW (and of course JonoF for his initial ground work), the the HUD transparencies were an inspired idea IMO.

Could you please look into adding support for 16:10 resolutions (eg 1280*800, 1440*900, 1680*1050, etc.) and Horizonal+ FOVs? 16:10 TFTs are fast becoming the standard for PC monitors and I'm sure that support for such displays would be greatly appreciated by many.

Thanks in advance.

Problem is I need a widescreen monitor before I can do anything.
I'll see if I can borrow one somewhere.

I think theres more Shadow Warrior support than credit is being given for. The lack of activity here, really, is down to the lack of activity...

When the HRP was in full flow, while i was maintaining it at least, it seemed as though there were/are a great deal of people interested in JonoFs port and SWP and making the HRP bigger and better. The biggest killer of Shadow Warrior in my eyes is the instability of the port and the 2 years waiting for the super duper JonoF version thats meant to be coming.

Personally, i would sit and play thru every map i own if i knew it wasn't going to crash as i turn every damn corner. I'm sure many others would too...

The shadow warrior fans definately need a stable ESW32 type program with HRP support. I'd be back here like a shot promoting and pushing the HRP again !!

I dont play anymore because I cant stand the 'glitchy' sound in Vista. I still love the game and occasionally I'll boot up my laptop and play a map or 2 (meh, Laptop mice). An OpenAL port would re-attract the fans that have since moved on to Vista

Yeah, forgot about that. I'm on Vista too now and last time i tried it all it was bloody awful to play with the stuttery sound.

/me wishes it played nice and smooth and crash free.

If you have a X-fi or Audigy you could use ALchemy - a DirectSound3D->OpenAL wrapper.

I believe that Asus have developed a similar OpenAL wrapper for their Xonar series sound cards.

If you have an Audigy (like me), you need $10 for Alchemy
