Is \"spooky monkey\" a widely used slang term?
Hi there.
Before I start, I'll mention that I've asked this question in other forums and most people think it's the silliest question they've ever heard about Max Payne. Nonetheless, I'll ask it again, anyway. In the first Max Payne game, the rantings of a Satanist are dismissed as "spooky monkey." Presumably Max is implying that there is nothing in Satanism that cannot be explained by naturalistic human psychology -- i.e., Satanists are just "monkeys" like the rest of us. However, I suspect this did not orginate with Max Payne. It might be a long-standing slang term. It might be a Simpsons reference. A long shot: it might be a rhyming reference to Cowboy Bebop, the Movie, which referred to "Spooky Donkey." Does anyone have other documented usages of the term "spooky monkey"? Yes I *know* no one else has ever asked such a silly question. I just get fascinated by words, and when I hear a phrase like "spooky monkey," I want to know if it is real slang, a reference to some other pop culture, or just a chance combination of words. Thanks. |

Re: Is \"spooky monkey\" a widely used slang term?
I googled the term and only came up with references to Halloween and a band who's called Spooky Monkey.
I think with "spooky monkey talk" Max meant that Lupino wasn't making sense to him, hence "monkey talk". And it was "spooky" because when those junkies murdered Max's family, they were also talking about "the fear of fallen angels". In MP2 we learn that "the fear of fallen angels" came from the 90s TV-show Address Unknown. I don't think that "spooky monkey" is a widely used slang term.

No. He meant just a spooky monkey talk. Monkey Talk is sorta slang for bable. Spooky just meant errie talking

"Monkey talk" makes sense to describe Lupino's words. (Excellent voice acting by Lupino's actor, by the way... he really sounded like a sociopathic cult leader would sound.)
Thanks for clearing that up. And all this time I thought that they were talking about the "Flesh of fallen angels," not the "fear of fallen angels." Thanks to Maxtream and Akari for the information. |

Of course it's "flesh of fallen angels". I don't know how I came up with "fear". I guess a few recent eight-minute-breathholds screwed up my mind.

That reminds me -- I really liked that phrase, "Flesh of fallen angels," because it was a neat twist on the traditional, "Flesh of the gods."
Most of you probably know this already, but Quote:
I won't speculate about whether the designers of Max Payne personally used any chemical inspiration, but the dream-like hallucination sequences impressed me. (They also annoyed me, because I suck at jumping puzzles, but slow-motion jumping is pretty cool.) |

I don't know if "Flesh of fallen angels" was inspired by "Flesh of the gods". But it's possible, and you mentioned an interesting parallel.
The atmosphere of Max's nightmares was great. I agree that the jumping part was annoying, and the fact that you could die in that dream resulting in "Game Over" could have been another hint at The Matrix but I didn't like it.
