Question What is Duke3dw?
I have a question: what is Duke3dw and can it be used with EDuke32?

Re: What is Duke3dw?
Duke3dw is another port based on JFDuke3d, and it's maintainer is ProAsm. It's more advanced than JFDuke3d, it has the latest code by Jonof plus many additions and corrections done by ProAsm. But it doesn't have the advanced EDuke32 features. You cannot play the latest TCs and MODs with Duke3dw. You need EDuke32 for that.

But Duke3dw is more compatible than EDuke32, and many old TCs play better in Duke3dw. That's a fact.

In terms of compatibility, I would say 95% for Duke3dw and 80% for EDuke32.

Both of them can coexist in the same folder (no conflicts). That's a very good thing. Having both of them will make sure that you can run almost 99% of all TCs and MODs.

I would say that EDuke32 is the path to the future and Duke3dw is the connection to the past. Thus we need both of them.

I would disagree, I haven't used this Duke3dw port yet but there is yet to be a mod that I haven't been able to play on Eduke32. If there is one, please let us or TX know.

I already informed TX about one map for AVP TC. I hope that he will fix it. Duke3dw do not have any problems with this map.

There also few TCs that also have problems with EDuke32, but I cannot remember now which ones. Because I played AVP a lot, I was able to find the problem. Now I stopped playing.

Alot of these mods could come down to poor coding that the original 1.5 some how didn't report back as an error but cause a FATAL SIG error thing in Eduke32 which can be fixed by the user if knowen how.

There are a lot of cases where the original code (and all other ports) will happily overrun array boundaries and shit all over whatever happens to be stored next in memory where EDuke32 will instead segfault and crash. This is a good thing because it means programming errors or ways for CON code to corrupt memory that would ordinarily go unnoticed (with unknown results) becomes a crash you can debug. Sure, this might mean that some old mods with problems require changes to EDuke32 in order to run, but the end result is that the underlying errors can be worked around rather than letting them have whatever random effect they would normally cause.

Heh. I remember when TeamTNT released BOOM, the first mainstream DOOM source port and this would happen regularly (see especially *cough* spritzoo.wad *cough*) and people would blame TeamTNT for the game crashing. What they didn't realise was the reason they lost a day's spreadsheet work in DOS two days ago is because a WAD file they played (four hours earlier when the boss wasn't looking) stomped all over a TSR's memory

Can eDuke32 or Duke3dw handle this map? JFDuke3d crashes all the time with it.

I dont think its a case of the software, perhaps your hardware cannot handle it as both Eduke32 and Duke3dw handles it my end no problem at all.
Not a single crash.
JFDuke3d (Oct 2005) did however crash several times with me on the platform dock area next to the ship and also on the ship just before entering the bridge.
I tried it with and without the Hrp and got same results in all cases.

Re: What is Duke3dw?
hmm, bug in JFDuke, that's what I thought. The original Duke used to run it fine too. It's just that every version of JFDuke crashed this map and I've never tried it again thinking the others could crash it too. Thanks again Pro. Now I'm able to play this map again.

Is anybody else getting no map music with Duke3DW? Trying 4.0.3.0; the title music is fine, but no music plays during a map; the console says "Playing Music: " and that's it.

Log file (starting a regular game, no addons):
Spoiler:

From what ProAsm said to me is that 4.0.3.1 will fix this bug and he will also add an autosave option.

Superb job ProAsm
