Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
My April 2009 Edition of Game Informer came in the mail today, which has an article on the upcoming game "Duke Nukem: Critical Mass" along with a few screenshots.
It is said to be the first of threee games in a trilogy for the PSP and Nintendo DS. Looks pretty cool! |

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
I was gonna make this thread. :P
It was a neat little surprise, however, both games look pretty.. bad. Or atleast, in very, VERY early stages. Its like Manhattan Project with lower res textures. Duke humself looks a little off. But, like I said, its in early stages still. Has time to improve. |

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
I find the DS shots to look better IMO, better use of the resources. The modelling is pretty weak in the PSP version. Duke especially looks pretty bad. The environment in the PSP verions looks good though. The important thing is how well the games play and that they manage to catch the Duke attitude though.

The PSP version looks good to me, but I'll be getting the DS one.

Can't see much in the DS screens. PSP version looks pretty good though, although the modeling (especially Duke and the shotgun) can look a lot better. The environments looks really good though.

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
The first PSP screenshot has got a really good atmosphere, like it's a low-res version of a Duke Nukem Forever that we'll never see.
It's sort of a mix between the earlier Quake (textures) and Unreal (colours, lighting) versions of DNF.

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
These all look pretty damn neat..!
I prefer the DS pics, although they're freaking small... Like Parkar said, the environments on the PSP version are great, just eh models look rather weak, hopefully because it's WIP... The DS version looks like DN:MP, but with better looking/more interesting'ish levels... Cool stuff..!

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
Wow....totally wicked!!
I was a bit worried about the fate of these games, especially after E3 2008 which brought us this, and then the promise of a "real" preview come October of last year(which never happened). But I suppose that this series of events just proves that these ARE indeed true Duke games we're dealing with!! The new shots, however, totally renewed my faith and I am totally psyched for Duke Nukem's arrival(s) on PSP. And yes, to reiterate some of the other comments, the First-Person PSP shots could easily pass for a 1999 DNF(on somewhat lower graphics settings). I think this is as close as we'll get to LameDNF! Oh, and it's also nice to see that Duke is back to his LA roots. As for those who have the GI article....were any more details revealed? Such as storyline, locations, tech, characters, enemies, etc? I'd like to know exactly what was revealed, if possible. |

The game looks pretty cool,
When I first heard the news, I thought it would be just a hoax... We are part of the official 3DRealms forums after all, you'd think we would hear this before some random magazine does. Guess not... |

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
I'll be getting the DS version for my red DS (yes I bought the Mario Kart one, NOT the DS lite) when it comes out. If it plays half as good as metroid prime hunetrs did, it will be an absolute blast.

Looks alright, kind of reminds me of a mix between Manhattan Project, the PSX Duke Games, and Zero Hour.

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
I say the solution is to get both a DS and a PSP...
The GameInformer article says "The DS version is a completely different game from the PSP version pictured above, but both are unified by the same story concept." I will just get both. I have Duke Nukem on almost every system it has ever been ported to and built on. Some are not ports at all and some are facsimiles more so than ports. The GameBoy Advance version is completely different I say get them all and experience the Duke character every way you can... from PC to Cell Phone, port or not, 3D or side-scroller, they are all great to me. Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
I agree with dopefish.
But still - great news. Hope those games will tell some story about the Duke's universe. Or maybe they'll be connected with DNF or with DN3D. Looks like Realms warms up new gaming generation with old school Duke3D on xBox, with those upcoming titles, and maybe they'll make some other stuff just to be sure that world is ready for serious things like DNF. And that's the damn right strategy. And i actually like to get more games bout Duke, instead of waiting for nothin. U go realms. Duke is back and thats awesome. [added]: Hey guys - do u think they made those trilogy out of original DNF wich been abandoned in 2001 year? Looks pretty the same.

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
If you look closely you'll see that they are switching back to the Apogee name. Why not use 3D Realms? Aren't they expecting the name 3D Realms to be huge after they finish their 12 year "project"? DNF is'nt coming. They switched to Apogee and are only doing retro games now. /suicide

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
Nope.
Apogee is responsible for Duke Nukem platformers. So they will do what they can do best (platformers 4 consoles). 3D Realms stands for serious stuff like Max Payne (by the way - wtf with MaxPayne3 and Rockstar?), Prey and DukeNukem3D - so they will bring us DNF(wid). Don't panic. |

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
Uhm... episodic games and portable consoles. How will this work? Will the episodes just be released as separate retail games? Will digital delivery be involved?

Re: Duke Nukem: Critical Mass in Game Informer
Sony is trying to push PSN (digital distribution) on PSP right now and they need content like mad. So, yes, digital distribution is totally involved with episodic stuff in PSP (allows for more content - practically its the same content but since its split in separate pieces/episodes it is perceived as "more" content for the network). I believe Nintendo wants to do the same with the iDS.
