Keen 4 in TED5
Yes it works.

1. Extract your keen4.exe with unlzexe.

2. Get this program and run it in the same directory as the extracted keen4e.exe

3. Place all the CK4 files and this file in the directory that the TED5 executable is in.

4. Make maps to your heart's content.

Some notes.

1. There is no easy or good way to play these maps yet. We know how to do it, but it isn't easy, so we're working on tools to help.

2. Make sure you've extracted your executable. Make sure you've extracted your executable. Make sure you've extracted your executable.

3. If this doesn't work, I don't care. Sorry to be blunt, but I've got a lot of things to do and cannot spend all my time trying to figure out your problems.

4. Programs exist to convert the gamemaps.ck4 file into a file that TED5 can edit. These aren't ready for public consumption yet. Sorry, but you'll have to wait for that.

I think that's it, go forth and make some cool maps now.

Awesome!

Hey, if you need anyone to code some utils, I'd be happy to (if I have the time.)

Most of them are written, they just need to be ported to DOS/Windows. I just haven't made the time yet.

BTW, Keen 5 and Keen 6 demo can also be loaded in TED5. I still have to compile ck5dump and ck6dump and make up a gfxinfoe.ck5 before that will work though.

Instead of unlzexe use unp instead, it'll uncompress any DOS EXE. I've uploaded it, I've still got it from about 5 years ago (don't ask me where to find it):

Re: Keen 4 in TED5
Ok, here's another utility for you.

This file will create files for TED5 so you can edit the original Keen gamemaps. You'll have to rename them before sticking them in the TED5 dir, I'm sure you all can figure it out.

With this I take a step away from Keen utils. With ChargingMoose's map patching utility and Andy Durdin's forthcoming map editor, I'm sure the Keen community will be taking large strides forward in the near future.

I used the one freshly unzipped and installed from 4KEEN.ZIP... it still does it. Is it getting maphead.ck4 out of gamemaps.ck4 or keen4e.exe? Does it matter if keen4e.exe is decompressed?

1) I'm pretty sure that the K6 demo and the full version are the same (as I've played them both)

2) I have win98, and I'm getting the same error as Volte-Face

You're thinking of Keen Dreams. Keen 6 is Aliens Ate My Babysitter, and the demo only has 3 maps.

It worked for me.

First I used Unp.exe on Keen4e.exe and Decarmack.exe gives an error.
Then I used Unlzexe.exe on Keen4e.exe and it worked.
I can change some creatures and it worked.

I recreated the level I made, which you can find on http://www.student.tue.nl/u/a.f.smeijers and I carmackized it. It didn't work . I think it carmackized to good .

Ok, I've got everything working ok over here but I have a few questions about TED5, I took a look at CharginMoose's level and he had switches and doors, etc. Well I can put those into my map but I can't get them to function without some sort of link. I just can't figure out how to link two objects. I took a look at one of the doors (gem doors that is) and the gem slot had 4 numbers in front of it. I right clicked it and it registered as an icon, but no icon appeared in the little box. So I am at a loss to figure out how to link in TED5. I've tried everything in every menu and nothing works. HELP!!!!!

Theoddone33:
I know what I'm talking about... K6:AatB DEMO has 3 levels (not counting the rocketship). K6: AatB Full version has all the levels. Use the warp cheat in the Demo and look at which levels are accesable, and remember the number; then use the warp in the full version, and compare the level numbers... They're in the same position, except the levels that aren't in the demo will exit the program. The coding for graphics in both games are most likely EXACTLY the same, except the other levels don't exist, and a couple of mods to the engine itself, that shouldn't mess up the graphic. Like I said, I've played them both. It'll most likely work if you interchange the two.

Re: Keen 4 in TED5
...Except that the locations of the map header, the graphics header, and the graphics dictionary are all different in the demo than in the full version. And also, the demo was designed to display the "you've won the demo" and win after you'd completed three levels.
Basically, I don't think it would be worth the effort of supporting the demo version of Keen 6 -- certainly it shouldn't be a priority.

I didn't realize the amount of interest there was in doing Keen4-6 maps. I have all the sourcecode for the project and I guess I can take a little time out to give you all some editable levels that are in non-carmacized format.

TED5 loads maps in a non-compressed format, similar to just about all other editing programs (QERadiant to name a recent example). To save space, we needed a compressed format since we were distributing the game on 5.25 and 3.5 floppies. Unfortunately, the only maps available to the public were the compressed ones. I will bring out the original maps that Tom and I created 10 years ago!!!!

Hopefully, soon.

Wow, I'm looking forward to what John Romero is going to give out to us. Actually I also didn't know Romero posted here either. But I've been working on a level for a few days, and it's coming along quite well. Now that I've found out how to link doors and switches I can practically do everything I've been needing to do. It's probably not called linking though, when you press Enter, a little window pops up asking you to enter a value for the INFO plane. when you do $#### and press Done or whatever, that number (ex. $1705) will register as an icon but no icon appears in the little preview box thing. but if you click on the map(when the icon is on) those numbers will appear
on the map, that's what I've been trying to figure out how to do, and I even overlooked in the help file 2 years ago. I never really studied enough then to figure it out, but it was so easy, I don't know why the light bulb didn't turn on sooner. Ofcourse most of you already know all this so you're probably bored. Sorry......

But I'm just glad I'm making a Keen level. I hope really soon we'll be able to make levels for keen 5 and 6. I'm starting to get a little tired of looking at keen4 graphics.

ck6dump.exe

gfxinfoe.ck6

Tested with k6demo. Same deal, extract your executable, copy files, yada yada. I don't know how to use them in the actual game. They may work for full ck6, I have no idea. Have fun. Maybe some source soon, we'll see.

Source code for the clinically insane or the interested. All this stuff was written by Steven Fuller and/or Dan Olson. If you do anything with this, please give credit where credit is due.

keenstuf.tar.gz

All written on Linux, so don't be surprised if it doesn't compile out of the box in your MSVC.

What's Included:
EGADUMP: (should work with Bio Menace Shareware, Keen 4, 5, and 6 Demo)
SNDPLAY: (works with Keen 4, maybe others)
CK4DUMP
CK5DUMP
CK6DUMP: (For the demo, not the real thing)
GFXINFOE.CK? (Should allow Keen 4-6 Demo editing in TED5)

Have a blast kids.

I wasn't around then, no. I didn't even know a "Keen Community" existed until this January.

Still, the programs I'm distributing are not infringing on id's intellectual property. I am not distributing anything that is theirs, only tools to work with their products. I'm not receiving any profit off of these tools. I don't really see how any of this could be illegal at all.

And what's with the Anti-Joe3DR sentiment I've noticed around these boards? He seems pretty nice to you folks, giving you Commander Keen history reports and all.

Hehe, I dunno which Keen you mean, if you mean the first one I did, the "retard" one, yeah it didn't suit Keen much:

But the ones Redoubtable [aka Mort McMire] did were cool, wish I still had em uploaded.

Anyways, after ID came along we changed it to Myth of the Moon Stone and the game is still being made.
