Damn why couldn't it be atari. Then I would have known someone to pester about porting the game.

Curious, what do you mean by this?

I know a few people from atari not to mention once being asked by atari what game from their library would I like to consider working on. :P

So we're not likely to see the source code for that either :\
I don't think we'll ever see its source code now. Atari won't release Blood's source, so there's no point in hoping for a RR source release. Bastereds.

Of course.

We've already started releasing source - ROTT & Duke3D. But we're not going to just go and release everything.

One of the reasons is that for the really old stuff, these things just don't exist anymore. We have some of that stuff, but not everything; been lost over time.
*bump* :P

Would you know offhand whether the code was still around for a possible future release for games like Blake Stone, Monster Bash, Wacky Wheels? Or if you just distributed, who should I talk to?

A while back the original Wacky Wheels programmer posted a bit of the Wacky Wheels source code on this forum. It was the bit that showed the Dopefish cameo. It's also on this Wacky Wheels page.

The original Monster Bash programmer put some of the Monster Bash source code on his website.

I found that soonish after posting.. guess I should have searched.

*looks* The deLZW code you mean? Spose I could dig in one day and write my own version of the game (somewhat an emulator) using the existing game data.

*wishes he'd already finished his programming course*

Monster Bash was the same guy who did Shadow Warrior (Frank Maddin). Wacky Wheels is Andy Edwardson (on these forums as AncentCoder or AncientProgrammer or something liek that). I could probably talk him into that. But there may be some legal issues with that and the Skunny Kart thing - I don't know. I could be wrong, or we/he may just not want to release it. I'd have to ask. One of the Blake Stone guys worked on Daikatana for awhile, but that's the last I heard of him (I think it was Mike Maynard). I'm sure if these exist at all, George would have them, but there's a few things.

1) I stand by my statement from before - we're not about to start releasing everything. Just because we put out a few doesn't mean we're putting out everything.

2) Getting George to look for it would be quite an achivement in it's own right. Let's face it, his time is better spent doing other things.

3) This all assumes it even exists, which is no sure thing. Back then we all dealt in floppy disks, which may have deteriorated over time.

It's AncientCoder.

Personally, I don't care if I have to wait until I'm 90 to get the Wacky Wheels source code, as long as it comes out some day. I hope that Skunny Kart having some WW code in it doesn't prevent the source code from being released. I wouldn't think it would but who knows.

There's a little more Wacky Wheels code on this page (thanks for the link Frenkel). Maybe Andy Edwardson has the complete WW source code. We should bribe him into making an "unofficial" release. (or not...)

No offence to RR fans, but Blood was miles better.

You gotta be kidding on that. There's too many horror type games already. Blood is nothing special. RR was original. I've never seen anything like it ever since. It was friggin funny.

But SW is still my favorite build game ever. Now that the code for that is released, the port is making good progress, and a new version of jfSW is coming out real soon. Ahhh, SW in opengl on my Linux box, i could never have hoped for this when the game first came out
I might start pestering jonof to make a jfRR too. His jfSW code seems to run maps from RR too (with redneck.grp), although it mixes up textures, so the hud, weapons and other objects are messed up. Maybe if the hardcoded textures where corrected it would run RR pretty well.

Btw, someone mentioned dosbox, but i'd have to disappoint you, the current version of dosbox is really slow with build games, and the latest release crashes quite often with those games. I've tried SW before, and RR and Blood recently, and they all have the same problem. However, DOSEmu runs all of those games quite nicely. It's loads faster and hasn't crashed once yet. Interested? => http://dosemu.sourceforge.net/

Im still happy at the record of source code released for this game!

Its so much fun to find games thought to be dead all of a sudden get a giant kick.

If only more companies released their source code (EA Command & Conquer <_<)...

Oh well keep up the good work and remember "When its done"

^^
