"Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
I was playing MP fine tonight and then all of a sudden WHAM, I get this dialog box that says "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" and MP shuts down. After clicking "OK" I get "MSVCRT.DLL" Until tonight everything was cool. The only recent changes made to my computer was upgrading my G3 to the lastest 21something drivers. Oh, the only other strange behavior was the Maze and Blood Lines. Max was glowing. Can anyone tell me what might be happening here?
Thank you good people, Woody P4 1.4 256rdram G4 21. drivers sound blaster live value |

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
I get the exact same error. I can play for a short time, then suddenly I'm at the desktop with the error messages. I had finally tweaked the game to work correctly, but then made the mistake of upgrading to the newly released Detonator drivers (21.81). I have a P4 1.5ghz with a Geforce 3 64MB AGP card. HELP!!!

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
Something kind of like that happened to me; I updated to the new drivers because max's head was bobbing up and down, and the faq said that was a driver problem. Well, his head dosent bob anymore, but the game freezes up on me every 5 mins! Someone please help us; there are a TON of stability problems with this game. I have talked to people I know, and at least 3 out of every 4 have some kind of stability problem, even after getting the new patch.
3D Realms, Remedy, or whoever it is that made the game- you need to do something, or everyone is going to assume all your other new games you release will have these problems, and no one will by them. Therefore, you will go out of business. I, for one will never buy another game made by ya'll because I spent my hard-earned money on a game, and it wont even run right! Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
There seems to be something strange happening with the latest Detonator4 21.81 driver set, at least on Win9x machines. We will be looking into the issue with NVIDIA.

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
well, as said above, i installed the drivers, played for like 5min and the game locked up with the same error message. i uninstalled the detonators again (all detonators i ever had on my system) and the re-installed the 21.81 and now its working again. i havent had a lock up again, and i played all night, all levels, with the highest graphic options to really stress my system, but nothing happened. no lock up! dont know what i did, but it worked. well, to all the others who are not as lucky as i am, i can only say uninstall 21.81 and re-install and earlier version which is working...i didnt see a great performance plus anyway, only like 10fps as im only running on a geforce2 gts.
my other specs are amd athlon 1,3Ghz 256MB RAM dont know if this may be a pentium related problem. |

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
Oh yeah, I get the 'glowing Max' dream sequence glitch too. It seems to be a fogging problem - with other drivers the whole area is fogged, but with 21.81 only Max is fogged, which makes him look like he's glowing. Actually some other objects are fogged too (like the plants in some rooms, I think), but most objects aren't.

I have the same problem on Windows ME with the new XP drivers. This is on a clean install of the OS and game.

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
Everyone who is experiencing the "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" problem with the game v1.01 and NVIDIA 21.81 drivers, please send you dxdiag information to
If you have a location where you always get the crash, try to run the game with these command line options: "-materialverbose -runtimeverbose -developer" and if the game still crashes, send the Verbose_.txt file from the game folder to Thanks, SamiV. |

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
This may seem like a dumb question based on your level of technical expertise compared to my novice level of technical "know how to" but here it is. How do I do what you are asking? Do I copy files, run a program, get into regedit, sysconfig, or something else? I am more than happy to help you guys help us but could use some detailed instructions.

If not, find the .exe file in the directory you installed Max Payne, right-click on it, and click "Create Shortcut". Right-click on your shortcut, and go to "Properties". In the target box, you'll see a command line in quotes. After the quotes (outside of them), put the following: -developer -materialverbose -runtimeverbose Click OK. Now start Max Payne using the shortcut. Go to the location, or get to the point where Max Payne usually crashes. Hopefully, it will crash again. Go to your Max Payne folder. You should find a .txt file with the word 'verbose' somewhere in the filename. Attach that file to an email and send it to Remedy. Hope this clarifies things.

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
I'm torn! I know that removing the Detonator XP drivers will solve this problem with Max Payne, but the thing is, the Detonator XP drivers improve performance for all my other games!

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
I guess there is only one thing to do...Buy another computer. That way, you can play MP on the older drivers and enjoy all of your other games on the new drivers.
Hey, SamiV! Has Remedy been able to figure out what's going on in MP with the new drivers? Is it the program that needs patching or the drivers? |

Eg, the symptoms come only with the Detonator4 drivers (the problem doesn't exist on older NVIDIA drivers or on any ATI HWTL hardware) with almost all NVIDIA HWTL cards in various operating systems but not in a easy to reproduce case, eg, it just happens randomly after a while. We are on the case, but this really is quite difficult... Eg, we are actively looking into all technical problems people have (and very often they are related to the individual hardware and there is nothing we can do about it), but this one really is a strange one... As a temporary workaround, you could try to run the game with Software T&L. :-P SamiV. |

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
Hi,
I finished Payne on a Win2k machine (512meg RAM, AMD 1.33 Ghz Thunderbird, Geforce2 GTS) with the 21.81 drivers. Fully stable Win2k system, that frequently runs for weeks without a reboot. The game was not all that stable, with these symptoms:
Other than that, I managed to play the game for intervals of up to about 4-5 hours at a time with no interruption, although I had to quit the game several times (for email, etc) over the days. Since I finished the game, I can't give further insight on this problem but I hope this helps! [ 09-28-2001: Message edited by: Mark Rejhon ] |

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
Has anyone tried the new Nvidia XP beta drivers that are out on the web (version 21.85) to see if they correct this problem?

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
Here is a twist to the tale;
I cant run the 3dMark2001 with the 21.81 drivers. The new Nvidia drivers crash 3dMark and it says to down grade ur system. I just installed 512mb and it helps everything else, BUT max payne and 3d Mark :S Y MUST YOU TOURMNT US SO??? Anyway is there a patch solution from Nvidia or U (Remedy or whoever) or is there some code that we insert? Thanx! |

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
I tried upgrading to the latest official XP drivers out there (version 21.83) and got the same problem shortly after starting the game. Whatever Nvidia fixed in those drivers, it didn't take care of this problem. Has any progress been made on the developer side?

Re: "Out of memory Vertex Buffer" Please help
Just out of curiosity, how do i reinstall my Virtual Device Drivers for Win2k?
"Something" happened and now dxdiag says that i have a mini-VDD but no VDD; also, in registry, there is nothing listed under VDD. Help! That's the reason why i couldn't even install the demo of MP on my machine (and had to use my friend's sucky computer). Microsoft has shitty tech support and i can't find jack in their databases. I was hoping that some of you experts out there could solve my problem. |
