Question Anyone beaten the final level in Extreme ROTT?
"The Unholy Chamber" it's called. The first room with the switches has left me totally stumped. Flicking them all seems to produce the sound of a lift moving, but after that, nothing. One person in the comments of this Youtube video claimed it can be solved by flicking them all in clockwise order - however I've just done this and still I see no new path to take. Even entering CARTIER to show the whole map reveals no new hidden paths, so I assume there must be some obscure elevator to track down somewhere. Apart from the switches, I've uncovered the two larvae rooms hidden behind-and-to-the-sides-of where I start.

I'm hoping *somebody* has attempted - and beaten - this level at least. I don't care if you cheated your way through it - just let me know at the very least how you got out of the first area as it's really peeing me off. Thanky.

Do you mean you're stuck at the starting area?
Those elevator switches is the only way to next area and it is easy.

You just go to the switch(whatever anyone), flicking it and DON'T MOVE YOURSELF TO ANYWHERE, then just wait and you will "go" to the next area if you stand here when the lift moving sound ends.

Just remember, DON'T MOVE YOURSELF TO ANYWHERE if you are flicking a elevator switch without door or walls. Just stand there and you will be transfer to next area like normal elevator.

I finished it back in 1995. Does that count?

Seriously, we wouldn't have released it if it was unfinishable. Our rule was that in a retail game, the level had to be finishable. No comments about HARD, but you had to be able to do it somehow.

There are a couple of levels like that in the various packs that violate this rule, but they were obviously not real. Come to think of it, they're all my levels.

The Vomitorium (ROTT)
The Grand Vomitorium (EROTT)
You and Spray (Freeware level release)
This Causes an Error (Reject level pack)

All of these cause an error, and crash the game, but the first two were warp only levels (meaning you could only get to them with cheat codes), so we violated the rule of proper level construction for them.

The first three break the game because there was strange programming that bosses could only appear in the same levels they originall appeared in. Meaning, if my character was used in Level 25 (not the real number, I'm making up the number right now) in the original game, any addon or level pack also had to use it in Level 25. If you didn't, the game would crash when the boss died, because the special programming to handle events after the boss death wouldn't be there. So those three levels I listed crash the game because I use Spray. The fourth intentionally crashes the game by sending a pushall off the map grid, and generating that "I'm Free" graphic that was in the game.

Yeah I know that. It was so funny, back in the day... I thought you guys did it on purpose... Just one thing. Was it programmed to go off the map grids or tricks of the level editor? (I think 2nd but hey, what would I lose if I ask...)

Well, moving walls inside the game got their "paths" by arrows left in the editor. The walls were dumb, they just moved in the direction you told them to go until they'd hit an arrow and go a different direction. If you constructed your arrows poorly during the map design, you'd get wandering walls. If you never stopped the wall, it would just go off the side of the map grid, which would crash the game.

It meant you had to watch your walls during level design to make sure they actually went where you thought they'd go. Criss crossing walls was OK, so long as they didn't hit the wrong arrow when they crossed paths.

And then there's the two maps where we intentionally sent one of these walls off the map grid. "This Casues an Error" was one, and as I type this, I recall a second map where we did that, but I cannot recall which map that is at the moment, so my list of crash maps above is one larger, I just can't remember the map.

I simply said that because I was stuck on that level. You are surrounded by enforcers and there's a dog mode behind you... Well, I guess that level was just for fun, eating enforcers!

I think "This Causes An Error" was in the original Dark War while "This Causes An Error Too" was in the Rejects Pack...

Maybe, there might have been some Mercury Mode powerups around, though... I'm not really sure...
