Thumbs down Mouse freaking out...
I just installed Max Payne 1 just now, and the patch too...

When in the menu and in the game, the mouse keeps making exxagerated movements... It's not a sensivity problem, i move my mouse, say, to the right to look on a wall, and the mouse goes off in all kind of wierd directions... It would be easyer to show as a videoclip, but if som, eone already know this issue, and being familar with it, please tell me how to get it fixed...

I have already searched the forums, nothing from what i looked under was matching my problem...

Hmm, the only info i can find of it, is "Logitech cordless optical USB mouse"...

It works just fine anywhere else... i tried the game with low setting (pretty much everything on low quality and disabled) and it still happened...

And as i said, i did patch it...

Well I have a logitech Mx510 optical and I had no probs with max payne 1. Have you tried uninstalling it then re-installing it (seems to be the common motifs in this forum)? Other than that, I dunno. I assume all drivers are up to date.

PS - check logitech's site, maybe there's a specific issue with your mouse that they know of

I don't think thier website will have this issue mentioned... it's only with this one particular game...

No idea what that means (unless IR is infra-red)
Is there anywhere where i can check this..?

Also, if it one of either, what would that mean..? and why is this issue only happening with this one game in particular..?

Re: Mouse freaking out... (Max Payne 1)
Yeah, ir is infra-red. It has had probs in the past acting strangely with some software, which is why most today are rf. The reason I was asking is I owned an ir cordless mouse and it acted up only on unreal (never could find out why). Have also had probs with rf wireless keyboards in having them get locked in a key-repeat (like you're running forward in a fps, getting close to a drop-off or cliff edge, take your finger off the key, and your character keeps running - right off the drop off or cliff. It's why I stick to corded devices for my PC.). So I would try Hiob's suggestion, if you have a corded mouse, try it and see if it works. If it does, then it's some oddball conflict with the mouse driver software and the game. Then the only thing you can do is email the mouse manufacturerand hope they can help you fix the problem. Wish you the best of luck dude.

*edit* Oh, and if your mouse has a clear plastic part in the front (or red-transparant) and it must have the recieving base in "linee-of-sight" then it's IR.

I'm planning to get the MX518 form Logitech as i said... It should preferably be corded...

I currently don't have another mouse to use...
But i assume that the problem you mentioned (unreal as you used as an example) is the same i have...

Hopefully getting another kind of mouse, also corded, will fix this annoying issue...

I have a cordless logitech to, but i know that those tend to act up in some games so its a genneral issue i think.. maybe its a signal thing or something like that but yeah i recommend MX518... there is a new model but its only got one thumb butten and ive gotten used to my two thumb buttens on the mx518 very quickly so unless they make a new fast one with two thumb buttens then im sticking with this one.. and it works perfect in Max Payne i can ashure you that

Works fine even with cordless you say... maybe it doesn't matter if it's corded or not then... At least with this mouse...

Anyways, i'm getting it... i found it in some store for about +300 DKK, so unless i find it VERY cheap over the internet, i'm planning to get it there (store called Nova Data)

I have a Logitech Wingman Gaming mouse (with cord) and I've had some "mouse freakout" problems in the past as well.
In my case, pressing the left and middle buttons simultaneously would result in the mouseview flipping around like crazy in some games (Quake 3, for example).
Is your problem similar?

Not a big deal if I don't get it working, since i've beaten the game a few times before. Just annoying.

If played in window, mouse doesn't lag. It's not a perfect workaround, but it's playable, and that's what counts.
Just add "-window" to the shortcut.

Re: Mouse freaking out... (Max Payne 1)
Well there is only one reason that this is happening, and it has NOTHING to do with the mouse itself. I also had several problems with other games and this was the root cause (Dungeon Siege 2 ran in hyper speed, as well as NFSU2). The thing you need to do is go into the install folder, right click the .exe file for Max Payne, and hit the compatability tab, and then have it run in compatability mode for windows 98/ME, not windows 95. This will fix your problem. I also had this problem for Steam, when trying to play CS:S, it would automatically forget my video settings each time I quit out of the HL program, so I made it run with different compat. settings and now it remembers everything. This is a general fix for most speed bugs, but it also can be a fix for common boot and log problems, as well as driver malfunctions and BSOD's within a common program's root drive. Updating drivers may not help, but running it in sync with the new drivers you do have may.

P.S. - Btw, something I've learned through painful repetition of error - Don't buy new gear when you have no idea what's wrong with your setup. I replaced two mb's, a cpu, and two sticks of ram on my computer before realizing it wasn't them failing, it was my computer shorting out because it was plugging into a two prong (ungrounded) outlet instead of a three-prong, even though I had the converter. And so I just kept destroying more and more equipment and spending more and more money. Point is: find out the root of the error, even if it means being patient, then fix it appropriately.

You should try using a non USB mouse or non optical mouse
if nothing else works assign mouse movements to keyboard keys and play the game like that (which wont be fun)

Hi Micki (and all). Try running the game in Windows 98 compatibility mode.

(Right click on Max icon, select Properties, then "Compatibility" tab, check "Run this program in compatibility mode" and select "Windows 98 / ME". Text may slightly differ, i have Czech Windows and I am trying to retranslate text back to english.)

Write back if it helps you. I had the very same problem and this fixed it - now I can play Max Payne in high resolution with all details maxed out, tripple buffer and "wait for vsync" enabled.

Re: Mouse freaking out... (Max Payne 1)
I'm having a mouse/keyboard problem with Max Payne, in fact i've had it for years now.

It's hard to explain though, it's like the controls stop responding or "freeze" for a second or so, but the game keeps on going. Sort of like someone is unplugging my mouse and keyboard every now and then. For example, if i'm running forward/left and scrolling the mouse to aim left, it'll sunddenly stop scrolling, but Max will keep on running, as if i'm still holding the W and S keys, even when i'm not, like if i've tried to run just forward with W, but he keeps strafing left.

..Yeah, it's kind of hard to understand but I can't figure out what the problem is. I've had the same thing on my Nvidia 6150 (Old) and my current ATI Radeon x700, so I don't think it's a graphics card issue or even a hardware (mouse) issue, seeing as Max Payne is the only game that this glitch happens in. I have my game patched to 1.05.

Any ideas? It'd be nice to get this fixed after all these years.
