He was Duke's voice for Duke Nukem II, his only line was: "I'm back". He did some voice work for the 2001 trailer(as some EDF soldier I believe, AFAIK you can barely hear him) aswell I believe but that won't be used.

I would find it fun, to at least now what Joe's line was back then when he did the EDF Soldiers voice...

I've stated that before. It's just grunt stuff you'd expect soldiers to say. Nothing exciting - HONESTLY.

I didn't expect anything like a whole line anyways...
Anyways, this thread is about Jon st John, not you Joe

I remember a quote by some guys who got a look at one of DNF's "zoo levels" and said there were lines made by Jon...

But maybe those were some of the old lines, and no newly recorded ones...

That's what I thought as well. I remember people saying it's too early to record lines as it is usually left until the final stages of production. George knows JSJ is the Dukes only voice, so I'm sure when it's time he'll be back in his most known role.

Now I can't picture anyone else speaking Duke's lines nowadays other than Jon St. John. Someone else here mentioned that James Earl Jones *is* Darth Vader, and so Jon St. John is Duke Nukem. I couldn't agree more.

He just said "engaging enemy", which was used when Duke fired from the 'pimpmobile' with his AR.

"You know, the old voice of Duke, John St. John, was back, doing his thing."

If the lines weren't done after 2004 then they'd have to be pretty old.

I read an article a couple years ago (can't find it now, though) that was an interview with Jon St. John and it dealt exclusively with him going into the studio to record some DNF tracks....so FWIW the latest I've heard or read is that he's not only going to do Duke's voice but has already done stuff for the game.

"A couple years ago" are the key words. Most of that stuff no doubt got tossed out. Im sure the audio quality has probably been increased ten fold since "a couple years ago."

Nothing he says is set in stone, so by now maybe they'll have changed their minds-far fetched, I know

They could always get Jon St. John's son or grandson to do the voicing.

Question Who's going to be doing Duke's voice in this game?
I hope it's John St. Jon again. I also hope he hasn't lost his touch (translation: I hope he's still able to do the same great Duke voice we've all grown to love) Are the voices already recorded, or do they still have to fo them?

All I know, that probably Jon will do voice for Duke, but that is just me. And I do not think that 3D Realms is about to comment on this "Are the voices already recorded", they haven't done so in the past.

I believe they have, i vaguely remember something like: "Voice recording is done in the final stages of development".
So probably not done yet.

Re: Who's going to be doing Duke's voice in this game?
It definitely makes sense to me to wait recording the voice until the end.

I would imagine that as they're developing the levels, they might come up with good one-liners all the time (things that were not apparent during the story-line, or maybe even some good ones from this forum . It would make sense to me to bring the voice actor into the studio and get all the voice fragments/one-liners at one time and not having to do make-up sessions.

It'll probably be John St. Jon. I'm sure that he'll still be able to do the voice perfectly.

I don't think that ALL VOICES are recorded in the final stages. Some voices HAVE to be recorded when making a scripted scene to do the lip synch and stuff like that. If you don't have the audiofile...what are you going to synch the lips to?

In animated movies, the animators have mirrors and animate mouth movements according to how they look themselves. Hopefully 3DR are doing more than just opening and closing characters' mouths in time with the words.

I hope that wasn't a reply to my post...because in that case it doesn't make sense at all...

To do a lip synch you NEED the actual sound file already. The phrases have a certain tempo and timing to synchronise them.

What you saw in that animation studio or anything is just the making of standard preset lip positions for each word or letter or whatever...and then you just need to place them in correct order with the sound file. Which i guess would be the actual process of lip synching.

And THEN they would have to modify the expressions again if the scene is a dramatic one or depending on the situation...that's why you NEED the sound file to make the scenes properly.

Think about it...is much easier to record the sound and then make the scene than making the scene and then telling the voice actor to talk in timing with the scene on the screen.

Speaking as someone with a lot of amatuer experience with voice acting and animating lip work. It is ALWAYS easier to have all the resources first. Generally with Game design they would have this stuff go through phases, having temp voices in place. In some games lip syncing is done by the game automatically. Half-life comes to mind. It uses a "Controller" bone, based on the sound clip to move the "mouth". Im not sure how it works in Unreal but i'd imagine something similar takes place.

Re: Who's going to be doing Duke's voice in this game?
Yea!

I cannot imagine they would need to do the voice first. Really, most of the one-liners are done with first person perspective anyway, so those you would not have to sync. Even though I can not really imagine that they would not have an "automatic" sync of the mouth for the rest of the characters either.
I mean, even my stupid cell-phone has enough voice recognition that I can easily make calls without touching any keys (No training necessary and I have a Norwegian accent!). I don't know how much interactivity there'll be in this game in any case. Duke is normally not the most "talkative" guy in the world, but we're bound to be interacting with other characters in the game. It would definitely be a seriously tedious job to sync everything at the end of the game.

In any case, I bet that they'll have John St. Jon. do the final Duke voice as well.

I bet there are mirrors in the game, and duke will say one liners in front of them. Thus you need duke's lips synched too.

Well lets hope lip synching is done well, as it wasn't too bad for it's time in the 2001 trailer. HL2 really raised the bar on facial animations, especially LS, and I haven't seen anything come close yet. I wonder how much time 3DRealms is spending on it, or even if it's done already.

To do voice acting, you need a script first. In that they are casting out for one-liners, it is more likely they are writing the lines now, rather than doing the voices.

I'd hope they would have a "script" done ahead of time. Like before they started working on the game. Sure you always make changes as you go, but i'd hope they would have wrote the thing ahead of time.
