Is Dynamic Lighting possible in the Build Engine?
Is it at all possible for Dynamic Lighting to be used in Duke Nukem 3D? Duke Nukem 3D's lighting is sector based, and it's highly unrealistic. Anyone know?

With a bit(not a tiny bit) of coding yes.

it is possible but it would take a lot of work after the coding in of dynamic lighting for the levels to work with it and not look like crap.

I doubt that...

Simply make the levels using Dynamic Lighting have a higher version number so Duke3D can ignore Dynamic Rendering on old maps...

Theoretically that would be REALLY easy to do... but I'm not a programmer (yet) so I don't know too much about these things...

*yawn* This is probably in the Top 5 most frequently asked questions. It is probably only second to JFAud.

In short, anything is possible.

In long, it would take a lot of time, patience and effort to accomplish this task. The easiest way to “cheat” is probably to make a model with a few polys and skin it with a translucent texture. Even then it would look like .

Don't count on it happening soon.

ehh, I don't think thats what he meant. I think he was pointing out it would need a lot of work placing light sources and such on existing maps. There is also no need to put the light data in the map file. That would only mean you can't add dynamic lights to the original maps. Better to keep that in a separate file.

I think dynamic lighting would be great in-game but as said earlier it would take time, but I don't think it should be forgoten.

It will be there someday. No question about that.

Dynamic lighting will happen SOME day, just not any time soon. It took Duke 10 years just to get high res and 3D models, be patient.

I completely disagree. If done right you can get some realistic results.
