What are you doing here?
No really. What are you still doing here? Why do you keep coming back to this message board despite all the talk about Duke Nukem forever have been moved to the Gearbox forums?
Is it the community? Just an old habit? In my case, it's probably a bit of both; I don't even remember the last time I read the gaming and Duke sections, I just stuck around for general and public media sections. And I looked at my account info, I've been on this forum since 2000. That's quite a long time to spend on a message board.

Re: What are you doing here?
... because I am like a fledgling, afraid of flying away from the nest and the warmth of my mother.
Seriously though... I can count the number of 'intelligent' gaming forums I've been a member of on ONE FINGER. There have been conversations on this forum that have lasted for weeks that would've degraded into a nuclear (not flame) war within one day. The moderators have always been awesome too. Pretty amazing too, considering Duke3D is one of the most... 'juvenile' games ever made. For whatever reason, the typical riffraff who talk in all l33tspeak, lolcat, or just have egos so huge that it disables their ability to talk like a sentient life-form, were always in the extreme minority here. I really can't see that kind of forum EVER existing again anywhere.

Re: What are you doing here?
There's something about this place that makes you keep coming back for more. Maybe I've sort of grown up with this community. I mean I've been here 9 years, and everyone pretty much knows who I am. The senior members anyways.

What gives you that idea? I know of a site that's still around, even though a lot left for other sites.

Re: What are you doing here?
This is a nice, warm place to warm your feet for a while after spending some time on the cold Internet.
Like you say, the answer is probably habit and community, but I think the real question sould actually be "Where did everybody go?" This forum used to be packed with people like myself who actually didn't really give a rats ass about the DNF forums. Of course everyone was interested in the game itself, but it was quite enough to check that part of the forums every 6 months and draw a disappointed sigh when everyone were still discussing what color the handle of the shrink gun would have. If it was in the game. And IF the game was actually ever released. What I'm saying is that the DNF forum was how I found my way here but never the reason why I stayed. What I don't understand is why all those people who never really cared about the DNF forum suddenly disappeared when it was moved.

Because some of us are Apogee fans predating Duke3D. DNF is great and all, but I joined these forums simply for the classics. |

Re: What are you doing here?
Pure habit. I don't come here as often as I used to prior to Gearbox move and actually I cut my visits down a tad even when 3DR let go of the DNF team.

Re: What are you doing here?
I don't know why I still come to this place. I guess I just occasionally come here to check to make sure nothing of interest is going on. I don't frequent any other forums.
Nowadays I usually just check Gen. Messages for a second and off I go. EDIT: Holy shit! I just realized that this is my first post for the year.

I do belong to some other forums, but I wouldn't really call myself a regular there. I might post like once a month. I am a regular here at 3D Realms and have recently been poking around some other Duke forums.

Been coming here every day for over a decade. I don't really understand why duke moving made such a difference. I never paid attention to that board.

Re: What are you doing here?
I came here after I played DNMP in 2003. Later joined the 3DR forums, been here since then.
Lately, I go elsewhere to post or play some random game.

Re: What are you doing here?
For me, I hardly post on other forums (I think I've made one or two posts on the Gearbox forum, its a bit...young...to me) as usually, as wayskobfssae said, the conversations here on 3DR's forums could last for weeks and (in my view) they'd be interesting enough that you may read a single forum thread, many pages long, just because of its interest.
Add to this, there is a true variety of active people here from all ends of the world and, whilst we've all had our disagreements and our battles on here, very rarely did the admins have to appear in full armour plating and kick+ban gun on here. On here if I posted in the wrong thread or created a thread in the wrong section, I would report it or I'd get a message about it and it would all be sorted painlessly. In the kind of manner "we've all done it, don't worry about it, just don't do it again m'kay? ", whereas on other forums, seemingly everyone would pounce just as much as the admins. So all this brings me to why I am still here! I do like to keep my presence known, especially to those I recall (who may or may not recall me) and still have the occasional intelligent conversation or see Mariamus's latest avatar profile pic I suppose my other feeling is, when I come here, is the vibe that it still generates. Yes its gone closing time, we're locked in, but we're still enjoying ourselves although much of the congregation has disappeared to that spangly glitzy new pub up the road that just opened up (that's the Gearbox forums for those that aren't getting what I'm alluding to :P ). There's still the trashy messages scrawled on the mirrors in the mens room from Yatta (in lipstick that I have no idea how he appropriated), splats of red paint everywhere, doodles of Octabrains on the backs of many beermats scattered around, a group of people in wooly pullovers (drinking what's left of the real ale whilst talking about the merits of Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure), posters for the latest Count Drazula book on the walls and let's not forget those who are still tinkering with PC hardware and games in general. And lets not forget Mariamus drooling over screenshots of Vinnie eh? With regards, Yickle!

I come here because it's what I do. I've been doing it forever. It's dying but, what the hell I'm still coming.

Re: What are you doing here?
still here. i check gen gaming daily, and pop media few times a week.
Not much going on in this section, so i check it weekly, if that. I miss seeing all of the threads and conversation and arguments, not just in here, but everywhere. It's drying up quite a bit in the other 2 areas i check routinely.

Deep down, some of us just want to be spanked. /Not ME, of course.

Re: What are you doing here?
Also wanted to add that it's probably the fact that I've been here 9 years that logging in every day has sort of become a routine and to break that routine is kind of tough. Only way is if the forums go offline or something, which I don't think is going to happen.

It's slowly getting irritating having a thread asking me what I'm doing here every time I log in.
