Lets talk Rise of the Triad.
I want you former ROTT players to try and sell this game to me. From what I read up on this site, and it's description, it sounds fantastic. However, i've never heard much conversation about it anywhere else. I do have windows xp though. This may be a problem, i presume. In any case, I want you all to try and talk to me about what's cool about this game. It sounds like it has some wicked features.

There's a win32 port on icculus.org. I'm sure there's some binaries for it availiable, too.

ROTT was absolutely fantastic back in the day, though. I have rather fond memories of the engine killing gibs cheat.. something about eyeballs flying about and blood and guts dripping off walls just held a place in my heart.

The game had some cool stuff, and I don't think it was really brought down as much as some people think by the fact that all walls were at 90 degree angles. The weapon selection is great as well, from the drunk missiles to the firebomb, very fun stuff.

How's this for a selling point? Buy it or I will be seeing you from whatever belltower you are near...

I didn't think the belltower needed anybody to ring the bell nowadays. Hey, maybe i'll look for ya while I casually aim my sniper rifle in that direction, as I do daily!

Re: Lets talk Rise of the Triad.
Thanks Joe, that helps. I've got a question about the levels though. When it says 'up to sixteen stories high and an area of one million sq. feet', are there any skyscrapers in this game or? I mean, it would be pretty wicked to walk into a building from outside and take an elevator up to any floor of your choosing. Anything like that?

And how well does that XP port work anyway? I don't want to buy the game and find out I can't play it

Those height figures are a reference to the mapping tech used at the time. It's 16 stories high because of the fact that this is at it's heart Wolfenstein 3D code.

It's super advanced, but the 16 story high thing refers to the fact that Wolf engine code basically has floors and buildings that don't go any higher than the "level you're in". ROTT code goes 16 "grids" high, hence 16 floors.

Not sure where the square foot thing comes from, probably some markting stuff.

Re: Lets talk Rise of the Triad.
'up to 16 stories high' doesn't mean you can have a 16 floor building like you may think. What it really means is that each level can have one of 16 heights (which each height being an increment being about the height of the player). There are some nice features (like GADS) which allow you to create elevated floors of sorts, which you can then walk under.

It's a great game though, and certainly a requisit to having a complete collection of classic games.

'Ludicrous Gibs!' The best bonus ever.

That doesn't sound right. I distinctively remember someone asking if the extra stuff that was only availiable on the CD would be made availiable for download for people who bought the download version, and the answer being no.

It might've had something to do with the CD version being out of stock, making the only way to buy it the downloadable version.

No way - there's tons more stuff on the CD. Which, by the way, we still don't have any of, so the downloadable version is the only one available at the moment.

Ok, not a big deal. I'll hold off until they're available I suppose. Or maybe I can find one on ebay or someplace else.

edit: Just bid on one right now for real cheap. Looks like it's even got the old huge box!

The ones on Ebay are an old version.

The new CD master I made combines the EROTT CD with the ROTT CD, and has everything we have ever put out for ROTT on it period. Including several user things - it's the definitive ROTT CD.

Now if our guy here would ever approve it, we can start selling them again.

Makes me wish I wouldn't have bid on it already. Is the extra content downloadable for free anyway, or will I be losing out on good stuff? Not sure if it makes a difference, I'm already obliged to pay the money that I offered on the bid.

While we're "talking" about Rise of the Triad, can someone enlighten me as to how you use the cheats (not the alternate cheats, but the ones with preceeding backslashes) in the game.

I've looked at both the cheats on the website and on the "Apogee FAQ", followed the instructions provided, and still can't get cheats like the \EKG cheat to work. Maybe this is something that only works on US layout keyboards? In case you're wondering, i'm from the UK, and have a UK layout keyboard.

Any insight anyone can give me will be greatly accepted.

Custom Remote Ridicule files and one on one death matches made me love ROTT. Also, on of the bloodiest games I've ever played

Unfortunatelly it is near impossible to find TWO people with working copies of ROTT and old school computers (and old school modems) to run them on. Still the best deathmatch I've ever played...or likely will ever play.

You just type them in like normal cheats. You go into the game, type in the enable cheat codes code ('dipstick' or '\ecc'), and then your free to type in any other codes as you wish. Make sure that you are using the right slash (Which is the '\' one), otherwise they won't work.

Personally, I prefer the slash version of the cheats. They are much quicker to type, and most of the acronyms are fairly self explanatory. Oh yeah, and the EKG chect is only available using them too (That cheat rules).

Re: Lets talk Rise of the Triad.
Thanks for that... but it still didn't work.

However, in a fit of frustration, I did manage to find out how to enter those cheat codes on a UK layout keyboard (or any other language keyboard with a layout very similar of the UK layout.) Basically, you press the hash key instead of the backslash key, then the three letter code.

e.g. instead of <font color="red"> \EKG </font>, you would instead type: <font color="red"> #EKG </font>.

I won't go into too much detail as to how I found this out but will only mention that I decided to try the only other key which is in a different place on a US keyboard, other than the backslash key.

Joe, if you ever read this, IMHO I think you should add this tip to the ROTT cheat section of the website, but only if you want to and/or feel it is necessary to do so.

P.S. I've just now seen the Extreme Gib mode, and for a game as old as ROTT is, I am impressed.

Now that I think about it, you might be right - I can't recall another Apogee game before Duke Nukem II (Dec 3, 1993 - same date as Blake Stone, and one week before Doom) might be the first game with actual speech in it.

Dopefish's "burps" in Keen 4 aren't true burps. It's just a sound effect like everything else in the game. It's not created from a burp sound converted or anything like that - it's just a sound effect that sounds like burping. Subsequent appearances of Dopefish in other games generally use my burp wav files that are on Dopefish.com, but that's an unofficial gag thing - it's not "legitimate", so to speak.

Dopefish is not the hero of Keen 4.

The hero of Wolfenstein 3D says: "Yeah!", when you finish the 1st and 5th episode.

And Johnny Dash does al lot of talking in Monster Bash.
