Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
I believe it would be extremely helpful for people wishing to use the GPL Duke 3d and eduke sources to have an "open" version of duke3d to base their work on.
An open version would entail removing all copy written material and replacing it with generic stand-ins. If someone wanted to make a 100% free game off of duke3d source they'd have to painstakingly remove all the Duke3D references from it. I was wondering if such a project was already in the works. |

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
I'm inquiring if this has already been done, or I should I do it myself.
Also the community made material uses 3drealms designs which are copy written and so are the .cons and .map files |

The CONs are GPL.

If every single texture, model, and sound is replaced, and then you mix that with the cons and a compiled exe you have a generic freeware version of Duke Nukem 3D. Maps can easily be supplied.

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
You wouldn't be able to use any level designs from Duke 3D at all.. so basically there would be no way to do an open source version of Duke 3D. You couldn't even have an open source Duke game because you wouldn't be able to use his likeness or even his name.
So you would just end up with another no name FPS. |

It would be a basic fps structure so that its somewhat functional to work from. I thought they weren't GPL because because they reside within the grp file. The whole idea behind a openduke would be one that does not require the grp file to run. This would make it easier for a hobby gamemaker to just pick up a port, and this open .grp file and work from that.

They were made GPL along with the source code itself and included in the source archive.

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
Most of the material in the HRP is eligible for that purpose. The Duke characters comprise only a fraction of it.

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
but they are using 3drealms copy written material.
AND you still need the original grp file to make it work. Since no one is working on such a thing a moderator might as well as delete this thread. edit: on a second thought. Does anyone know of a win32 program (I'm not digging out a legacy computer to use editart to replace all the artfiles) that can open and modify artfiles and work with grp files? Most all the art can simply be deleted, but tiles that reference critical actors (sector effectors, enemies, items, breakables) obviously will need to have something to stand in. (MSPAINT should prove useful) edit2: holy crap, where can I find a kenstract. My duke3d CD has been scratched beyond repair since 1999 and I've just been holding onto a grp backup for ages now.

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
The content that depicts copyrighted characters, such as Duke Nukem, might be off limits, but the rest of it -- most of the textures and models -- should be fine, because it is not based directly on the original Duke tiles (IIRC this was one of 3DR's stipulations about the project). That was my point. And you do not need to have duke3d.grp in order to use the models and textures in the HRP. The only reason they replace the original tiles in the game is because of the def files that come with the HRP. However, you might need duke3d.grp in order to run a port at all -- I'm not sure.

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
Get thee to the Tutorials & Resources thread. There you will find Roma Looms GRP-Viewer. Get the second link as I think the first one to Roma's site was down (might be back up).

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
I asked about making a FPS from the ports/source code a while ago. IIRC it is legal to simply take the ports, under the GPL, and use them as a base for your own FPS or some other genre of game. You need some grp file or at least the con files and such to run the ports. I don't think you actually need duke3d.grp to run the engine.

I was thinking of making a template FPS, one that does not contain any copywritten material. Anyone wishing to make a gamebased on the duke3d source code could start working off of this template FPS instead of having to go through the process themselves. Like a blank slate. I'm not completely sure if I'll have the free to work on a project like this, so thats why I asked here. |

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
A year ago, I've stared working on a stand alone FPS based on eduke, but during big changes in my life (university, job, girlfriend, etc...), I didn't have enough time to finish it, if anyone is interested in completing that project, it whould be awesome. You can check out some details here: http://amc.planetduke.gamespy.com/fo.../t5114-50.html
Or download first and only version here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/planethazard/

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
I was going to download it....but then I noticed it was split into 7 different parts? Is there a single file to download somewhere?

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
I think not. I was uploading that with 7 kbps, so thats why i splitted it... Althrough i still don't have much better upload speed. If someone want's to download all 7 parts and reupload it in 1 zip, i can give them sourceforge admin privileges

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
Well, it doesn't allow you to take the source and make commercial software out of it. Is that what you mean?

Re: Is there an openDuke Project in the works?
You are not exactly right. Perhaps you meant propietary software ?
Ofcourse with Duke3D there are two things to keep in mind: 1)The content is still under the old license and not open source. 2)Build is not under the GPL and the build license doesn't allow commercial distribution. Edit: bobthefish, the source code of Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena is released under the GPL. |
