Was a name change ever considered?
Over the course of development, has 3dr ever toyed with the notion of changing this game's name to something other than Duke Nukem Forever? NOTE: I'm not suggesting at this (assumed) late date that its the right thing to do. But let's consider:
DNF is a perfectly decent name, but... *It's rather banal. Presumably, "forever" was picked because its the proper sequel to Duke Nukem 3d, and "for"[sic] follows "3". Otherwise, there's never been any indication that the title has meaning in the context of the game. Scott Miller has an opinion on the importance of titles, and I don't know that 3dr's game squares with that philosophy. *It is associated most strongly with delays/incompetance. You and I hear "DNF" and think "Cool game I'm following the development of," but to the vast majority of gamers, DNF is a joke, and NOTHING ELSE. Most people have not played Duke 3d, and even those that have do not have much of a reason to translate that goodwill to a decade-later "sequel". Not that a name change would wipe clean the memories/feelings associated with DNF, but it might relieve some baggage, epecially with the novice gamer (whose money is as good as ours). For fun, can people think of name changes they might like? Think outside the box-- it doesn't have to be X: YZ. It could be excentric. Heck, the next Bond movie is called Quantum of Solace. Granted, we don't know much about the goings on in the game, but... The Redemption of Duke Nukem Duke Nukem's Big Score Duke Nukem in Sin City Duke Nukem Redux The Return of Duke Nukem I don't know, these are just to get the creative juices flowing.

Honestly, I always thought 3dr stole the title form the movie Batman Forever...

Re: Was a name change ever considered?
We haven't played the game, nor do we know the story. What if there is some relevance to Duke Nukem Forever? Then you'd feel dumb asking about it, then, wouldn't you?
![]() The name has, ironically, become a joke in itself because the game is Spoiler: Bottom line is, we know nothing about the plot other than the game involves aliens in Las Vegas and Duke kicks ass. Nothing else of the plot is officially revealed. Therefore, the title is, just that, a title for now. When the game it played, the title might have some significance.

They did. George or Scott once said it was a spoof of Batman Forever.

I'd be interested in knowing if they ever considered a name change.

Re: Was a name change ever considered?
Yes it is, but it has an obvious meaning, both in reality, and in the context of the game-- remember, Duke is apparently running a casino at the outset. The game does not seem to pick up immediately where Duke 3d left off, hence, the "return" of sorts. "The Return of..." was just a quick example.

![]() Another skimmer. I said as much in my original post. ---------- So, ASSUMING that the story is pretty much what we pieced together, and it was your task to change the game's name from DNF, what do you think a good name would be?

![]() So that could be a tie-in to the title I suppose. The hero that is "Forever".... Quote:

Re: Was a name change ever considered?
I doubt they'd ever tell us, but I'd like to know the answer this as well.
My guess would be that if they ever did, it would have been considered around the time of the first Unreal swap. But once the 'forever' part of it started living up to the name, I'd say it was out of the question since, by that point, it was already part of gaming lore. |

Duke Nukem: Hooray We Finally freakin' Released!
Obviously the perfect title that expresses the feelings of the devs when the game finally hits the streets, I'm sure. ![]() |

Re: Was a name change ever considered?
I'd like to hear if they ever thought about it, as well.
I think in the long run it's better to keep the title, though--even with the negative associations many might attach to it, the name "Duke Nukem Forever" has kind of become iconic by now. Besides that, who doesn't want go around bragging to their non-believing friends that DNF finally came out? ![]() |
