One problem, though - I notice that the pack has the oversized 502 texture, which cause slowdown after viewing a security monitor in episodes 1 or 3. Included a resized version - I can't seem to insert it in the duke3d_hrp.zip file without breaking all the high-res add-ons.
You just resized the texture, now it looks a bit wired! It should be remade in the smaller size!

You have identifyed a bug made by yours truely (me), i also compresed the zip so it loads a bit slower (only the hacks).
Great work guys,
Here's a fixed and faster loading hachs.zip - just un rar making sure that you copy over Duke3d directory.

It's not because of texture's size - it's a bug of jfDuke my first post was about. It's been disscussed in the modelling thread.

I've mirrored the pack at my page as well.

I'll be spreading the love to the industry folk who have been expressing interest as well. Good job guys, it's nice to see it organized so cleanly and running better now that everything is compressed better.

As I've said for months, 8 bit png for textures that don't need 32 bit is all the difference in the world.

Hi there,
First, thanks for your great pack, it saves me a lot of time searching for stuff in those long threads. I just wanted to let you know i receive some errors.

I have attached a screen, but in case it failed...

Error on line DEFS.Con:22
Error on line DEFS.Con:23
Error on line DEFS.Con:25
Error on line DEFS.Con:27

Those are some, but i can't see them all, the startup screen happens to fast. (it's very hard timing right with the print screen button...)

Then why don't you bring down the console ingame and scroolle to the start of it
(num lock and page up)

As i get it the errors are there because i didn't realy care to split the tiles in a atomic and non atomic pack, so you gett a error because it cant find the original stuff but it's not a problem.

I might not split it befor the final version and then again you never know, mabe i will

Thumbs up to Wieder, Eclipse, IHerman and every one for spreading the news and making mirrors .

These errors has nothing to do with the textures or models. As far as I know it happens when you use the port with 1.3d version since the port is a port of the atomic version. Not sure if its the case its just what I have understod to be the reason, anyone correct me if I am wrong. It does not affect the game in any way, at least not that I can notice and has always been there for me when playing with jfduke.

No, the use of consoles wasn't every common til Quake came out.

Isn't modyfing things in source code for Duke 3d illegal too?

I mean they are changing graphics etc.

Making mods within the same engine is usually not a problem.

The problems start when you start using one companys resources (graphics, music, levels) and put it into another companys engine. A Duke 3D mod using the Source engine would look really cool, but in order to play it, you would have to buy a copy of Half Life 2. That makes money for Valve but what about the company that supplied the artwork for the mod?

There's nothing to be gained for yourself by giving away your game to the competition.

XD. Roffle.

How stupid it is to think for it to be illegal for 3drealms, to edit their own game in ANY way? Any mod or sommat that 3dRealms makes, while others may not, is literally legal and acceptable through their range.

Hey, they DID make the game. Silly.

Re: Duke Nukem 3D: High resolution pack released
I just got the pack even though I had most of the stuff anyway just because it's so damn organized and it made a big cut in the load times too!

I do have one issue though. How is a mapper such as myself supposed to add hires userart now that the duke3d.def file has been moved into the zip file? The problem is that I need a fix that will not just work on my PC, but on ANY machine that has the new pack as well.

Re: Duke Nukem 3D: High resolution pack released
It is simple.

Just extract the zip file and work in the "duke3d_high" folder and when you are done pack it all up again. When you have the files unpacked it will work like it used to without the shortcut. Just remeber to turn compression off or you will get worse performance then without a zip file.

You can also just exttract the duke3d.def file from the zip and add an include to a def file were you add your stuff in case you dont want to edit the contents of the pack. like this.

last in the duke3d.def file add

include myhighres.def

and then create a def file in the duke directory called myhighres.def and add any def lines in here.

In fact I think I'll add an include line in the duke3d.def for an external file in next version so you dont have to tutch the zip at all. Propably named user.def or similar.

If you have xp I think you might be able to just use explorer to edit the stuff in duke3d_hrp.zp. Not sure how well this works with compression etc as I have not tried this.

Re: Duke Nukem 3D: High resolution pack released
Well, I don't use build with hires textures anymore because it just slows it down way too much so I really don't need to mess with the zip. Besides, I use ACDSee as my picture viewer because it can browse zips too. XP's zip support is a joke, so I turned it off. It's not quite as transparent as it should be. It jsut feels tacked on, like many of Microsoft's "improvements".

BTW, before the new pack was released I just had my batch loader make a copy of the orginal duke3d.def and append an include for my file at the end. Having an include in the pack for a user.def would work real nice, eventhough I would still have to check for the duke3d.def in the game folder.

Use the 'Store' option in your Zip program, instead of the 'Deflate' one. If you did it right, the 'compressed' data should be the same size as the original data.

FPS games run in real-time, so they can't waste precious CPU resources decompressing texture data. (Plus I don't even know if JonoF's port supports Zip decompression, anyway.)
