A "Taunt" button
Hi guys.
I was wondering, should DNF contain a "taunt" button, such as AvP did? Or, maybe Unreal Tournament would be a better example, although the taunts there worked differently - you had to map the taunts to various buttons, unlike in AvP, where you had only one. I know that Duke is a personality as such and therefore he should comment events only when he wants, but, since the game is highly interactive so there's no doubt we will face unforeseen situations in the game, I suppose we should be able to "make" Duke say something, like "Eat shit and die!" and such Of course, it depends on how Duke's commenting is implemented, but I presume it's like "if (5+ enemis killed in less then 5 seconds) do (say blablabla.wav)" or something like that, of course varied and much more sophisticated But, if you would fight them for a longer time (being careful because of low health), the formula above wouldn't work and yet you may want Duke say something eventually, especially if you would outsmart them somehow. You may say it would be needless, but, have you ever killed your opponent and than comment it like "And stay down!" or "That was easy!" (yep, Unreal Tournament ) ? |

Re: A "Taunt" button
I voted yes, but only for multiplayer. It's one of those flourishes you can add to defeating a human opponent that works extremely well, but it kind of loses something when used on a computer opponent.
I can't see the point for it in single player. It's not like you can annoy a computer opponent now, is it? They can pretend to be annoyed, but you still know it isn't real. Leave that for auto-taunt, ie for "Duke to decide when to taunt". |

Re: A "Taunt" button
Personally i'd prefer it being random in Singleplayer... i only would ever think of this for multiplayer... with eirhter auto-taunt or a taunt key...
I wouldn't want it in singleplayer though...

Re: A "Taunt" button
Well, Duke should know and have an appropriate taunt for the situation.
The thing I'm thinking is that a taunt key is just more appropriate as a form of communication rather than a satisfaction thing. That's why they call it a taunt - flipping off your opponent after artfully finishing him off. Flipping off a computer opponent will just never feel the same way. Interestingly enough being taunted by an opponent is also different according to whether the opponent is human or computers. Being defeated and taunted by a human opponent just makes me chuckle and try harder. Being defeated and taunted by the computer just makes me want to hurt kittens. But I'm going off topic here. |

Re: A "Taunt" button
Why not just go with both.
For SP, automatic taunts as we have used to. And for MP you could choose between: random, none, taunt key random with adjustable levels: often, not so often, rarely and so on. Or be triggered only by certain situations. It might come too confusing if everyone is taunting the whole time - that will get repetitive and boring really quick. Or you would need many, many many, many many many lines of voicework. Also there must be serverforced options to do the same thing

Re: A "Taunt" button
Taunt is good, but no auto-taunt. Theres no feeling behind it if its automated like you can have it in UT.

Re: A "Taunt" button
A taunt button could cause the game to feel unnatural if Duke repeats the same for a same event time after time. But for MP, hell yeah!

Yeah. I don't see a reason why not to have it.

Re: A "Taunt" button
yeah, i'm probably one of those guys that would actually like using the taunt button in single player.
taunt button in multiplay would be mucho superbo, an option to bind your favourite one liner/s to (a) (certain) key/s using the console would be good too.

Re: A "Taunt" button
That's not true - I mean, if you had a control over a few generic lines (which could be different from those said automatically), it would be up to you how much you use them or not...

Re: A "Taunt" button
And in single-player, too. If you don't want to use it, don't. But it may be more cathartic than yelling at the screen (if you do that sort of thing). I've had a few choice words in certain frustrating gameplay moments. All the better if my character can verbalize my sentiments.
Perhaps you could go into an options screen in the menu where you could keybind specific Duke exclamations. Did that boss kill you for the fifth time, cackling evilly? F3 suggests, "Go f*** yourself".

Re: A "Taunt" button
But that little button could be used for another more important action specifically for SP. Taunting is much funnier in MP. For console versions, if there will be, saving buttons is vital.

Re: A "Taunt" button
I want auto taunt AND manual taunt, and I want both to be adjusted to be relevant to the situation at hand.

Re: A "Taunt" button
single player: duke doesnt need to be told what to say or when to say it, it should just come naturally and duke will no when the situation requires something to be said
and for multi player: With all the headsets around these days you can tell your mate yourself what you think so you dont really need a taunt button |

Re: A "Taunt" button
.RTS files are awesome. I remember bringing this up a few times a long time ago and my threads would get deleted (all I asked in them was if remote ridicule would be back), so I'm assuming that they won't be in , even though they made multiplayer tons more fun in Duke and Shadow.

Re: A "Taunt" button
You had "remote ridicule" in Duke 3D, so why not? I can't see a use for it in single player mode, though.

Re: A "Taunt" button
I think it should be scripted in SinglePlayer. Duke should select from a wide range of Dukisms when something intereting is happing.
I liked the way Duke would say witty one liners when I smacked down a few pig cops, or blew soemthing up. "Eat Shit and Die" or "im gonna rip you new one" those were my favorites although im pretty sure the new dukism will be politically correct and much more limp. "Splat you naughty piggy" "im going to rearange your molecules" and much more camp stuff besides. |

Why not one liners in singleplayer + optional "taunts"(that is remote ridicule) in singleplayer, the same as in Duke3D ?

Re: A "Taunt" button
Went with no. A specific taunt button I don't think would be needed. Perhaps if you have no alt fire capability for your weapon at the time and you press the right mouse button, it would activate some type of taunt. Middle finger, verbal taunt, etc.

Re: A "Taunt" button
I don't really like the idea of automated taunts in multiplayer. I would rather have none then automated - because if its automated it ruins the whole point of taunting since everyone is taunting each other left and right. You got to save the taunts for more special moments or they loose all meaning... :P
And hey if there are no taunts at all I wouldn't be surprised if the players just made their own (for example, kicking the guy you just killed in the face). I mean, in ye olde counter-strike you have your sprays, and in your Halo you got your standard crouch mechanic... So I wouldn't be surprised.

I also loved taunting in AvP, not much as a marine (they were all like "we're gonna die"), but as an alien and especially predator... man I loved to spook people simply by predators's roaring But, in single player, what if the enemies (or at least some of them) would react to your taunts? Like by responding or they could get angry and rush for you... Of course, something like this would be extremely hard to implement and get it work, but guys, if anyone can do this, I believe it's 3DR |

Can picture it now... pissing some pig cop of and have him run straight at me or just pick up/throw/destroy random stuff in his surroundings... Then it would actually make sense to have a taunt button (in single player).

Re: A "Taunt" button
I found the taunt in AVP to be extremely tactical.
I've never been arsed to set up macro's however. |
