Shoot ‘em up!
I just finished the SP side of FEAR. It was short, but very enjoyable I thought. I liked the action in the game, and the scary stuff was very effective IMO. It seemed to me that FEAR alternated between scary stuff and action oriented game-play which made the game seem a little longer.
Thinking back to my DN3d days, I remember how I used to come home from a tough day at school/work and enjoy simply running through maps doing nothing but killing… and more killing! FEAR was obviously not this type of game, although it had its moments. I am hopeful that DNF is more like 3d though. Anyone else feel the same way? I was surprised by the interaction possible in FEAR, and I enjoyed the damage I could do to the world around me. I also remember how entertaining interaction was in DN3d. Flushing toilets, stepping in excrement, admiring myself in mirrors, turning on/off lights, etc. all gave DN3d more depth in my eyes. I would love to see DNF combine “slaughter-style” game play, with hardcore interaction. I haven’t played a game since DN3d that I enjoyed quite as much in that respect. What do you guys think? Duke wiping the floor with dozens of aliens per area, and stopping only to say “Damn, I’m looking good”, and play a little game of on-the-table pool?

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
Duke3d was meant to be more scary that it was perceived as. Even so, DNF is not a creepy/horror game by definition and the amount of periods where you walk around without anything attacking you(or seeming like something may) should be limited I think.
I don't mind some tension building moments especially later on in the game because Duke3D was the same. But the city levels should be fun once you're done mopping up the aliens because that's where the interactivity is.

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
If you want a shoot 'em up like D3D you will want Quake 4, although it lacks the humor D3D had the gameplay is solid and fast with a hell of a lot of action.
Or wait for DNF. |

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
Yeah, DNF should be the most bloodiest videogame ever made!

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
I don't know if I should agree with you or disagree with you...because DN3D is a game that I can ahppily play through again and again, and it's still fun and entertaining..even after I've stopped playing it. But the kind of game you seem to be describing is something like Serious Sam or Painkiller, which are types of games I personally find completely worthless and hollow.

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
^^No, no, not the same way as Serious Sam or Painkiller, not the amount of enemies.
I meant blood, gore, bits & pieces, you know? Kickin alien heads, testicles and that sort of stuff.

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
I was responding to FireStorm
I agree with you, more severed limbs, blood and explosive decomposition! And the kicking of alien testicles sounds incredible fun...foot 'balls'.

But it would be sad (imo) when it won´t have this little feature, the older versions had it...and it´s 10x cooler |

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
maybe you can shoot someones arm off and let him bleed to death. Now that's what I call dismemberment

painkiller is the standard of dismemberment, where one zombie with an axe beheads another zombie so the blood flies everywhere in all direction from his neck |

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
"Blood" allows you to kick heads around of beheaded zombies in the game

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
Kicking heads around is fun
It would be a nice feature, but first I want some dismemberment |

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
That is how football(soccer) got started, by vikings kicking the heads of their opponents around.

That would certainly make it very old, like more than 1000 years.

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
Full dismemberment a la SOF2 isn't it. George said as much a while back, unless they've changed their minds of course. Head popping and gibs from nades and such will be in though I think.
FEAR had a bit of this I noticed like when you get up close with the shotgun you can take an arm off, but it didn't go far enough for my liking. In general I'd like something similar to the "feel" and pacing of Quake 4/SOF2, with the level destruction and physics of FEAR although taken another step further. The same kind of AI as FEAR as well. Gibs like SOF2. And D3D style interactivity and humor on steroids. |

Re: Shoot ‘em up!
That's correct, but we have this little, tongue-in-cheek commentary by George:
"A lot more than this happened, but this is all I saw as I bumped into people as I was looking over flow for a couple of levels and working with Keith and Brian. Allen put up a couple of npc scripted animations in his level. Charlie was messing with blooms on particles. Kyle did some optimizations that made some levels run faster and is about to merge in some new Meqon physics code. Joe sent around some renders of a new character he was working on. Rob checked in some dismemberment code that we're playing with. Charlie and Scott were playing some deathmatch and making notes. Some of us watched Survivor and were glad to see the blonde chick go home."
