Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
It was "announced" in the lawsuit documents that Gearbox was working on a Duke game titled "Duke Begins" and that Take2 has had it "put on hold/canceled".
Supposedly it was going to be released this year. Supposedly... ![]()

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
Yep basically in late 2007 or so 3DR and Take Two re-negotiated the publishing contract for DNF, one of the outcomes was that Take Two's rights to a DNF sequel and a game based on a Duke movie where exterminated and Take Two instead got the right to do a Duke game telling the origins of Duke. Gearbox was chosen as a developer and "Duke Begins" as the working title. It was supposedly put on hold in early 2009 or so.

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
Its hard for me to think what the game would have even been like, not even including how they would make or tell an "origin" of Duke.

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
The origin of Duke, eh?
He used to spell his last name "Nukum" and he wore purple shirts and fought off pink little bunny rabbits. That's the origin of Duke that I know, but I'm sure they had intentions to spice it up a bit. Great, now there's FIVE Duke Nukem games that will never be finished. Duke Nukem Trilogy, Duke Begins, and of course... DNF. Not to mention other cancelled projects, like D-Day, and who knows how many others there were that were never announced. As if ONE failure wasn't enough. |

No, they're 100% talking about the Unreal-powered first-person iteration of DNF and they have plenty good reason to believe it'll never see the light of day. In fact, most of these naysayers haven't a clue as to what the side-scrolling DNF was and are only aware of the 13+ year version. ![]()

I've been playing Duke since '93, predating Duke3D, which was in '96. I've been waiting for DNF throughout the entire duration of "development". Every engine change, every bit of hype, every bit of bullshit. I have been lurking these forums for 11 years, and I have been a member for 6. I was with Duke almost since the very beginning, so therefore, I have just as much right to feel let down, disappointed, and voice my opinion as any other Apogee veterans here.

My joke had to do with the DNF side scroller that was.

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
When I said "other cancelled projects", I did not intend to imply that all of the previously stated games in my post were "cancelled" as well. What I meant to say was, "other projects, which WERE cancelled". So I wasn't saying they were all cancelled, I was just saying that they're all dead, regardless of whatever the cause of was.
I wasn't confusing the side scrolling DNF with anything, so I do not understand why this came into discussion.

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
If you say something, you must provide the proof. You said that DNF is coming out, so you must prove your statement. I'm NOT saying that it's not coming out, so I don't have to prove it.

Really? Because there's another Duke game that I would love to see come out as well. I don't recall the name of it but I remember that it sure is taking FOREVER.

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
HA!... yeah, no.
I love Gearbox studios, and with their past two games Borderlands and Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway... I'd love to see what they could do with Duke. I would love the idea of playing DNF at some point, but... leave that discussion for the DNF forums. Let us keep this thread on point with Gearbox and Duke Begins. And the hopes that T2 removes their head from their asses and allows development to continue.

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
I think that Gearbox's gameplay mechanics (the ones from Borderlands) will fit Duke perfectly more or less. BUT, I for one couldn't play Borderlands. That game frustrated the hell out of me. The reason why is because you were mostly fighting HUMAN enemies. And in any game were you kill humans it should not take 2 full clips of ammo to put down the sons of bitches. I always hated when games try to make human enemies hard to kill. Having thick armor is one thing, but the baddies in borderlands were half naked most of the time and even shooting them in the head would take multiple shots unless you used a sniper. Human enemies should DIE like humans. 3 or 4 shots should be it, only 1 if it's in the head. Monolith made killing human enemies feel right in FEAR. Those guys didn't feel like friggin' jugernauts on pcp.
HOWEVER, the reason I think the mechanics would work perfectly for Duke is because we aren't fighting human baddies. We are killing aliens and mutants, and for that I don't mind emptying out about a full clip into an enemy before it goes down. I love Gears of War and it takes almost a clip to put down a locust, but they aren't humans, so it's fine. I just hated shooting the hell out of some half naked guy on Borderlands only for them to run up to me and swing a machete at my face, regardless of the fact that they just got a shotgun to the face.

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
Also, Borderlands was built around an RPG concept of leveled enemies. So yes, you go against a level 40 enemy with a level 25 gun... it will take clip after clip to drop him. But, if you attack him with a level 45 weapon.. he'll be down in a couple hits.
Borderlands can't be approached completely like a standard shooter. ![]()

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
I realize that yes. But still, why couldn't the leveled up enemies just have awesome armor rather than be walking sandbags? I guess that's asking a little too much seeing as how Borderlands was supposed to be a much more "comic-book styled" game and not meant to be realistic. I was just stating why I couldn't really play it.
Although, I didn't notice that they made BIA: Hell's Highway. I played the demo and loved it but never got around to buying it. I loved that they finally made an all-out gory and violent WWII shooter with no censoring for the tweenies.

Re: "Duke Begins" for PC (TBA)?
The entire Brothers in Arms series is like that. Very dirty and gritty, showing the real violence of that kind of conflict.
The third game, Hell's Highway, is amazing. From a gameplay view the game is simple an awesome experience.... but the characters and the story... that's the real reason to play it. And... it's a very emotional story.
