Shacknews sees Duke Nukem Forever
A few weeks ago, Steve Gibson and Maarten from Shacknews were in town doing Shacknews work. George Broussard invited them over to see Duke Nukem Forever. They checked it out for about half an hour, and today they posted a few comments about what they saw.

Something you'll definitely want to read. It's available at Shacknews here.

Re: Shacknews sees Duke Nukem Forever
Did 3DR instruct the guys from the shack to be very secretive and careful about what they post about the game? I assume there was some kind of NDA involved. I wonder if the NDA also instructed them to only be marginally impressed/excited about the game. I get a wierd feeling from reading the article.

The game exists though, so, yay!

Would it please be possible for someone to copy/paste it here on the forum? Pretty please?

Shacknews Views Duke Nukem Forever
by Steve Gibson Apr 28, 2008 1:28pm CST tags: Duke Nukem Forever
Duke Nukem Forever, the game, actually exists.

I have seen it. Maarten has seen it. We watched actual interactive gameplay being interacted with.

Of course, we are far from the first to make such a claim. During 3D Realms' lengthy development cycle of Duke Nukem Forever here in the Dallas area, I have run in to my fair share of publishers and developers who boast they have gotten a glimpse of the game.

To be honest, I thought the game's supposed existence was a vast conspiracy. More than a couple of times over the last decade I have gotten vague invitations to come see the game "someday," with it never happening. I figured this was probably the same invitation other developers in the area had gotten, and were claiming that vague invitation as having actually seen the game.

Nothing of the game has been made public for years until that Duke Nukem Forever teaser was released last December.

However, that all changed recently. For a good half hour Shacknews witnessed several different DNF gameplay scenarios, mechanics, and environments being demonstrated.

We actually got to see the truth of Duke curator George Broussard's many past claims, including environmental puzzles and interactivity, a host of finished weapons, the existence of an in-game forklift, and plenty of heads and arms being blown off.

We both confidently agree that after seeing this demonstration, Duke Nukem Forever is looking great, and will easily stand apart from the crowd in both visual and gameplay styles.

Shacknews can also confidently state that, contrary to previous reports, Duke 4 will not be arriving in 2003.
Excellent! Forklifts! Finally some solid info!

All those who made comments about the game looking like crap based on the trailer can read that weep. . .

The part about a forklift that works is pretty cool. I found it interesting that they talked about the interactivity to such a degree. No screens or much specific, but it sounds very much like the game is as interactive as George had claimed before.

I think we have all gone crazy, a forklift is exciting, but not so exciting that you shit your pants over it. That is unless the forklift can be used to kill and dismember. . .

I think in the light of recent events we must create a thread dedicated solely to the forklifts in DNF. We could discuss shape, color, speed, weaponry and turn radius as well as additional functionality like impaling enemies on the fork. Who's with me?!

Awesome. \o/ Truly awesome.

This is great news to come home from work and find. It's great that 3DR are feeling confident enough to show off the game... and show off a lot. Thirty minutes is a lot of game time.

I can't wait for more media to be made public, and for more of these little "teaser previews" of such.

Now this is the kinda thing I like to see on the front page. I know it's not a lot, but at least it gives us something better to talk about than "what if aliens changed Duke's gender." When THAT kinda topic comes up, you know we've run out of things to talk about. xD

This really is pathetic. At first I thought, well its better than nothing. But is it? It basically IS nothing. It feels like they are still trying to convince us that the game exists. Well this may come as a shock, but, we believe you 3DR! So now what? How about a real story? They should have told the shack guys WID just like everyone else because this is just stupid.

I mean I love you 3DR but seriously WTF is this supposed to be?

Re: Shacknews sees Duke Nukem Forever
This talk of forklifts has me thinking. I wonder how many drivable vehicles there are in DNF. I mean, with the super interactive environment they're aiming for, we'd be likely to run into a wide array of Human and alien vehicles throughout the game. I wonder if we can operate all of them or not.

Heh, I don't suppose 3DR can confirm if the number of drivable vehicles is in the double digits or not My guess would be that it's very likely, given what we've seen them aim for in the past, but who knows.

It might be interesting if we have scenes like in the 2001 video where Duke is on a busy Las Vegas street with cars whizzing by if you could hijack vehicles GTA style and drive 'em around.

George posted his response over on the Shack to the article:

Quote:
Heh. You guys give Steve/Maarten a break. The situation was this....Maarten was in town and was leaving on Monday, or something. I'd talked to Maarten a week or so earlier about dropping by to checking something else out. It was Friday and time was getting late, so I asked Maarten if he and Steve wanted to drop by. Sadly, I asked about dognose too, but Maarten said he had to work till 8pm that Friday.

So they came over and we checked out some stuff and out of the blue I just decided to show them DNF for about an hour. We ran through a couple of maps and chatted about stuff and we asked for some feedback. It was pretty unofficial and off the cuff and just done because I've known the guys for a long time and they were local, and what the ****. They are being secretive/light on info because of obvious reasons, but just wanted to post and say "hey, we saw it and it's real".
Also, Steve and Maarten were asked to keep things relatively quiet in terms of specific details, thus the glaring lack of in-depth coverage.
